    • Balancing medical school with work for personal growth and financial stabilityFind fulfilling work outside of medical school for mental breaks, financial support, and a balanced life

Making use of your off-hours during medical school can be an effective way to earn extra income, recharge your mind, and ensure essential needs are met. The speaker shares his experience of working various jobs during his first and second year, including webinars for premed students and social media management for a dermatology department. These roles provided a mental break from medical studies while also contributing to financial stability for necessities and date nights with his wife. The speaker emphasizes the importance of finding fulfilling work outside of medical school, even if it doesn't directly relate to your future career. By doing so, you can maintain a balance between your studies and personal life, ultimately leading to a more successful and enjoyable medical school experience.

    • Balancing Personal Relationships and Medical School SuccessPrioritize daily goals, simplify routines, continue teaching, and ask foundational questions to maintain academic success and personal happiness in medical school.

Medical school can put significant stress on personal relationships and can exacerbate any existing issues. However, with prioritization and focus, it's possible to succeed academically while maintaining a healthy balance. The speaker shares his experience of simplifying his daily goals during medical school to improve his grades and personal happiness. He also emphasizes the importance of continuing to teach medical students and asking foundational questions as a resident. From his perspective, these practices will help him recognize his own progress and maintain a strong foundation of knowledge. Overall, the conversation highlights the importance of prioritizing personal growth and maintaining a strong educational foundation in the demanding field of medicine.

    • Prioritize Health, Relationships, and Financial Stability During ResidencyMaintain physical and mental health, build strong friendships, and secure a stable living situation for a successful residency experience

Taking care of your physical and mental health, building strong relationships, and securing a stable living situation are essential during residency. Neglecting these areas can lead to regrettable consequences. Firstly, prioritize your health by maintaining routine appointments, staying hydrated, and avoiding situations that may put your wellbeing at risk. Secondly, foster friendships with colleagues outside of your field. These relationships can provide valuable support and last a lifetime, as residency is a unique experience that forms strong bonds. Lastly, focus on buying a home to secure a stable living situation. Although it may be tempting to delay this, owning property can provide long-term financial benefits and peace of mind. Additionally, remember that communication with your supervisor is crucial. Understanding their expectations and policies can help you manage your work-life balance effectively. And, while it's important to learn from others, be mindful of seeking advice from every source, as not all advice may be beneficial. Overall, prioritize your health, relationships, and financial stability during residency to set yourself up for success in your career and beyond.

    • Maintaining balance and empathy in medical professionsMedical professionals can benefit from engaging in activities outside of medicine and acknowledging unique experiences to show empathy towards patients. COVID-19's impact on youth mental health necessitates continued support and resources.

The experiences of medical professionals, even those in training, can be quite different from those outside of the field. Engaging in activities outside of medicine and maintaining a work-life balance can help medical professionals show up as more authentic and empathetic individuals when interacting with patients. Additionally, acknowledging the unique nature of medical experiences and having people to keep us in check can provide valuable perspective. The discussion also touched upon the significant impact of COVID-19 on mental health, particularly among youth. With approximately 300 deaths per 100,000 people in the US due to COVID, it's important to recognize the immense emotional burden that this crisis has placed on young people. The surgeon general and CDC have both issued reports highlighting increased rates of suicide ideation and stress among youth during this time. It's crucial to continue addressing these mental health concerns and providing resources and support for those in need.

    • Mental health concerns for children worsened during the pandemic, especially for girlsOne in six teens reported thinking about suicide seriously in 2019, and the pandemic led to a significant increase in sadness, suicidal thinking, and psychiatric distress in girls, particularly during the first six months of 2021.

The pandemic has exacerbated pre-existing mental health issues among children, particularly in girls. However, it's important to note that mental health concerns were on the rise before the pandemic as well. For instance, one in six teens reported thinking about suicide seriously in 2019. The CDC reported that 44% of kids felt sad every day for a two-week period in 2021, compared to 37% in 2019 and 32% in the year before that. Girls experienced a significant increase in suicidal thinking, nonsuicidal self-injury, and psychiatric distress during the first six months of 2021. While schools reopening was a welcome development for many, it's worth considering whether it was the best solution for children's mental health during the pandemic. Previous data showed that suicide rates and mental health presentations in emergency departments dropped during school breaks. The full impact of the pandemic on children's mental health is still unfolding, and more data is needed to fully understand the various factors at play.

    • Effectively reach potential candidates on LinkedInLinkedIn is a leading platform for hiring professionals, especially passive job seekers. The pandemic has increased the need for safe drug supplies to prevent overdoses.

LinkedIn is an effective platform for hiring professionals, especially those who may not be actively looking for new jobs. With over 70% of LinkedIn users not visiting other leading job sites in a given month, it's the place to find a wide pool of potential candidates. Additionally, the pandemic has led to an increase in the toxicity of drug supplies, resulting in higher rates of drug overdoses without a corresponding increase in substance use. This is due to the loss of ability to import and smuggle drugs, leading users to seek out more potent and dangerous alternatives. In summary, LinkedIn is a valuable resource for small businesses looking to hire, and the pandemic has highlighted the importance of providing safe drug supplies to prevent overdoses.

    • Meeting people where they're atEffective communication prioritizes understanding and safety, leading to better outcomes and avoiding penalizing individuals for lack of knowledge. In healthcare and mental health, this approach is crucial for positive outcomes.

Effective communication involves meeting people where they're at instead of judging their lack of knowledge. This approach leads to better and shorter conversations. In healthcare, for instance, it's crucial to prioritize safety and understanding before addressing other issues. This was exemplified in the discussion about addressing a suicidal teenager's concern about their parent wanting them off video games. By setting the foundation for the conversation, the parent made the connection themselves and focused on safety first. This approach not only leads to better outcomes but also avoids penalizing individuals for not having the same level of education or knowledge. In the context of youth and mental health, this approach is particularly important, as initiatives like school wellness committees have become more crucial during the pandemic. By focusing on understanding and meeting the needs of young people, we can make a tangible difference in their lives.

    • Importance of mental health resources in schoolsMental health resources like calming rooms and counseling services are vital for students, even if not all use them. In-person learning experiences and traditional high school moments matter too.

The availability of mental health resources in schools, such as calming rooms and counseling services, is crucial, even if not every student uses them. The speaker shares her experience of the past few years during COVID-19, which included a mix of online and in-person learning. While she was happy to return to school, she missed out on some traditional high school experiences, like being made fun of or experiencing a full year of in-person learning before the pandemic. The speaker also shares her perspective on the effectiveness of online learning, noting that it depended on the teacher's ability to engage students and create an interactive environment. Overall, the speaker emphasizes the importance of mental health resources and the value of in-person learning experiences.

    • Adapting to new technologies and communication methodsYoung people have shown resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges, including remote learning and social isolation. Each generation adapts to new technologies and communication methods, and this generation is no exception.

Despite the challenges of the past year, including the shift to remote learning and social isolation, the current generation is resilient and able to adapt. Older generations may express concerns about the impact on young people's ability to communicate and connect, but history shows that each generation adapts to new technologies and communication methods. The generation that grew up using social media and video chats was best prepared for the shift to remote learning and found ways to stay connected. While some people have had a hard time adjusting to getting back to normal, many are happy to be back in person and appreciate the importance of being present with others. Overall, the experience of the past year has shown that people are adaptable and able to find ways to connect and communicate, no matter the circumstances.

    • Understanding young people's unique experiencesAsk open-ended questions, address cyberbullying and college stress, and listen to young people to build meaningful connections and promote inclusivity.

Connecting with young people requires understanding their unique experiences and stressors. While standard questions about home life and academics are important, addressing cyberbullying and college stress can go a long way in making meaningful connections. Asking "how can I help you?" instead of prescribing solutions can also encourage open dialogue. Furthermore, young people today are more vocal and eloquent, and their tolerance and openness to diversity can lead to a more inclusive and accepting society. It's essential for adults to listen and learn from them, as they have the power to drive positive change.

    • Discussing academic interests, mental health, and social media handlesExplore academic passions in history and medicine, prioritize mental health, and follow influential figures on social media for insights.

During their discussion, the hosts touched upon various intriguing topics, including a preprint Tyler put out on Twitter, Farida's academic interests, and their personal social media handles. They also emphasized the importance of mental health during the pandemic and encouraged listeners to follow certain influential figures on social media. Farida expressed her desire to major in history and medicine, while Tyler shared his upcoming piece in The New York Times. Josh also mentioned his presence on Twitter and Instagram. The hosts also reminded listeners that the podcast is not a substitute for professional medical advice and encouraged them to follow Pretty Litter and Quince for health monitoring and high-end shopping respectively. Additionally, they highlighted the importance of celebrations passport for gift-giving and emphasized the significance of following their guests on social media.

In this episode (How do I out serve her), I wrap my conversation with a friend, who's been married for 5 years, and examine his journey towards marriage and how he and his wife have navigated challenging times.

We discuss service leadership in a relationship and the mentality to out serve your partner. We talk about the roles and responsibilities in the household and the importance of having a partner that will hold you accountable. We debate the perception of the term “head of household” and why it might be outdated. I inquire about creating space for your wife to find and have a voice in the relationship. We go deep on how to balance the business of the relationship with the romance in the relationship. We end the conversation around the idea of maturity, what that means, and the importance of time management to balance areas we invest our energy in.
