    About this Episode

In this episode of Author to Author, Dr. Cynthia Toolin-Wilson talks with Francis Etheredge on his book Human Nature: Moral Norm (082022)

There is a ‘difference, both anthropological and moral, between contraception and recourse to the rhythm of the cycle: it is a difference which is much wider and deeper than is usually thought, one which involves in the final analysis two irreconcilable concepts of the human person and human sexuality’ (St. John Paul II, Familiaris Consortio, 32).

Human Nature: Moral Norm wades through a cultural mixture of challenging ideas which are either turning to sludge or starting to make sense, as if coming into clear water, enabling the whole book to find its central focus: Is it true that the human being is so well woven that the precept, “be open to life”, is inherent in the very psychosomatic language of a spousal love? In other words, although at times it is almost impossible to summarize or simplify the question under investigation, it nevertheless emerges that it is truly necessary “to be open to life” even when it is deliberately intended to avoid the conception of a child; and, at the same time, that this is a discovery of the content of the human inclinations, psychological structure and spiritual reality of the “one flesh” of marriage. Thus, in a word, the moral norm which is entailed in the reciprocal gift of self in marriage is neither foreign to “being-in-relationship” nor an imposition upon it; rather, “being open to life” is as natural to spousal love as the breath is to breathing. Indeed, the moral norm of being open to life is as integral to human nature as heat is to a flame – as the flame of life and love is to the divine spark which ignites it.

There are enlivening contributions from Dr. Mary Anne Urlakis, Dr. Mary Shivanandan; Dr. Hanna Klaus ; Dr. John Purk; and Dr. Thomas Williams, Suzanne Scheller and Dr. Christine M. W. Ward

In this episode of Author to Author, Dr. Cynthia Toolin-Wilson interviews Ellen Kolb on her book Pro-Life Journeys: An anthology from Leaven for the Loaf, a Granite State pro-life blog (March 3, 2024)

Since 2012, Ellen Kolb has been writing at leavenfortheloaf.com about the pro-life movement, with a focus on New Hampshire. Pro-Life Journeys is an anthology of posts from the blog's first decade, telling the stories of people working to defend human dignity and build a culture of life.

Compiled in the wake of the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision, Pro-Life Journeys is not about current headlines. Instead, in a collection of essays spanning a decade, it's about people whose work is building a foundation for the future.

From the State House in Concord, Ms. Kolb reports on legislative battles that carry lessons for activists everywhere. She interviews women who have found their way to pro-life work via unexpected paths. She travels to a regional conference to listen to a woman confronting terminal cancer who speaks out courageously against assisted suicide. While in the Nation's Capital for the March for Life, she hears from unconventional pro-life allies who defy stereotyping.

The inspiring people described in Pro-Life Journeys reflect many facets of pro-life work. There are essays about New Hampshire activists as well as people who have made their mark nationally. Some of the activists share the author's Catholic faith, while others hold a firmly secular worldview. What they have in common is a commitment to peaceful pro-life action.

In this episode of Author to Author, Dr. Cynthia Toolin-Wilson interviews Rich Agnello on his books Going to Williamsport and Our Marian Pulpit: From a Lector’s Soul House (February 27, 2024)

    Going to Williamsport

What would you do if you were the 12-year-old new ace pitcher of a very small town baseball team, and you and your teammates went on in one magical year to represent your far western Oklahoma panhandle roots at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and you were much too embarrassed beyond mere words to see your own mother cheer you on in the bleachers as you take the big stage hundreds of miles away?
This is Sooner's situation, and his story is Going to Williamsport, as he experiences his mom suffering through acute paranoid psychosis during the early years of deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill in the Eisenhower administration. Without the option to "just put her away" anymore, the only child Sooner sees his own embarrassment and severe contempt for a Semper Fi father who will not deny his marriage vows, nor his unbelievable love for his own son.
Going to Williamsport matters more than anything to Sooner, but definitely not at the expense of seeing "her" in those stands. In his own words, he takes as much as he possibly can, and then makes incredibly clear in the clearest of places that he alone, with his Cimarron Coyotes team is Going to Williamsport, without Dad and certainly without Mom.

Our Marian Pulpit: From A Lector’s Soul House

Humans can be devoted to many things. For Catholics Christians in particular, devotion has special purpose and meaning, especially to Our Savior’s Mother.

Too often for those in the Lector ministry, though, devotion is synonymous with dedication, as it merely applies to the skill or craft of performing a role in liturgy. Preparation and execution then become separate and apart from any prayer and purpose, and this demeans both God’s Word and the Liturgy of the Word building into the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

Author Rich Agnello can certainly advocate from a craft view, applying 50 years nationally to this ministry, including eight at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., not to mention his Marquette University College of Communication academic training.

Yet this is not Agnello’s focus, nor that of his book Our Marian Pulpit: From a Lector’s Soul House. Undoubtedly, mechanics are indeed important here, and the author’s detailed and desire-focused review of twelve Lector Elements, or LEs, are evidence of this. What is much more essential, however, is primary intention, or in the spiritual sphere, primary devotion. Agnello builds this devotion development in a manner similar to building a house, or to the individual Catholic Lector, their own soul house.

For the author, the depth of our devotion to life as a time of salvation preparation is most essential. While we may think we fully know Christ and his Church through reading the Sacred Scriptures, the Catholic essential is that nobody knows Him quite like She does, both on earth and in heaven.

Therefore, the Lector’s place to proclaim the Mass’ readings is Our Marian Pulpit. From this place, all Lay Ministers of the word see the Bible--and ultimately see Jesus--through Our Lady’s vision. Incredibly, from that vision born in us, most any spiritually devout Catholic can share their own testimony of faith effectively through their Lector ministry. This is identical to our relationship with the Lord: Lectors must own this responsibility and lead all of us to the Eucharist, just as Mary guides all of us to Jesus.

Those who are new to this ministry will find Our Marian Pulpit: From a Lector’s Soul Housea tremendous foundation to use a prayer life of depth for a humble role of service. Moreover, experienced Lectors will discover a springboard for renewal in this book, as they take a profound Marian way from very good to profoundly better in both their personal and liturgical holiness.

In this episode of Author to Author, Dr. Cynthia Toolin-Wilson interviews John Aquaviva on his book Improving your Kids’ Body Image through Catholic Teaching (February 23, 2024)

Improving your Kids’ Body Image through Catholic Teaching: How Theology of the Body and Other Church Teachings Can Transform your Life is the unique approach to the body image crisis that impacts many children. From a young age, our kids are under immense pressure from a variety of sources that can determine the value of their bodies. But God has something to say about this as well. Saint John Paul II’s wonderful teaching known as Theology of the Body is the book’s guiding force. Along with Scripture and the Church’s Sacraments, this book is an excellent parenting tool to guide your child so they see the worth of their bodies as designed by our Creator. In addition, this book discusses the numerous causes of a poor body image and includes chapters on how to instill fitness and sound nutrition into your family life.
