So, growing up in rural Kansas I had very much a sense of being alone in my teens. So when this new movie “Pump up the Volume” came out in the early 90’s staring Christian Slater, I instantly could relate. I wanted to use the pinnacle song he played as a pirate radio DJ where he finally admitted he had problems talking to people and relating, especially to a young woman he was very interested in.  I knew that song had to be involved in our show somehow.

So my wife and I get an unprecedent night out while our son is staying with Grandma. We get together with friends we haven’t seen in a while and go to an outdoor music festival here in Durham. We’re chillin’ on the lawn, listening to some folk music when I make the CARDNAL SIN of referring to the other couple as “Childless”.

The wife sits up straight, gets that southern angry drawl and proclaims they are “Child-Free” not “Child-less”, as if their lives aren’t complete without having children.  Me. . .being me, asked if “child-free” was supposed to infer my wife and I were somehow burdened by having a child?

Mrs. Child-Free wouldn’t give an inch, so I apologized and said next time I see a person living on the street, I’d only refer to them as “Home-Free”.  I wouldn’t suggest they get “Job-Free” benefits from the government or maybe get employment at the fantastic shoe store known as “Pay-Free” shoes.   Her entire premises was “ridicule-free”!

So now, I’m the “tact-free” person; “regard-free” how I view it.

A group of four-year-olds were trying very hard to get accustomed to school. The biggest problem they faced was the teacher didn’t like baby-talk. “You need to use big people words” she was always saying.

“John, what did you do over the weekend?”

“I went to visit my Nana.”

“No, you went to visit your GRANDMOTHER. Use ‘big people’ words!” she then asked Mitchell what he had done.

    “I took a ride on a choo-choo.”

“No! You took a ride on a TRAIN. You must remember to use ‘big people’ words,” she said.  She then asked Alex what he had done.

“I read a book,” he replied.

“That’s WONDERFUL!” the teacher said. “What book did you read?”

Alex thought very hard, then said very loud and very happy with himself “Winnie the SHIT!”
