    About this Episode

Qoolstreams Of Consciousness - Qool DJ Marv Vinyl Set - LIVE Mixtape Recording

An invitation to watch and enjoy my mellow good madness. People say artists are a lil bit crazy. I can’t push back on that, fortunately, I can channel my wildness toward creative listening. When something in the music connects, my mind hears looks listen sees – if I like or love, it seeps into me, going everywhere through me, like oxygen and blood. Then I gush.

What washes out is the bliss of connection and everything from within me, you see, my thoughts & insights, my sights seen, my family and friends, my movements…all burnished by the desire to find connection while solving the challenge of combining tones in attainment of cohesiveness by way of rhythm and flow. My way of solving a most fun puzzle as it’s much like a timed treasure hunt.

Curtis Mayfield sang, “Little child runnin’ wild.”

    Curious?

Because more is happening in the presentation of me at my imagination station, conveying through deejaying.

Inspiration for the main screen of my livestream – Qoolstreams of Consciousness – comes from the big screen TVs, which are above eye level and just beyond the entrances, of most delis and markets in New York City. On those TVs, me, you and everybody are watched and recorded…for security and loss prevention purposes.

    Anti-theft theater.

I like flipping scripts. Deconstructing the watching me for what I might take energy and reconstructing it, braiding it with the concept/personal reality of being black me. In the fine print of the job description of being black is that part about the non-stop omnipresence of malevolent attentions. Everyone wants to confirm their negative assumptions and pre-existing conditions on accepting you as a good person, from only a glance. Glance Culture is real is something that I consider; in half of a song you receive an eyeful of connection driven intention.

Watching me…you will take…notice of what I GIVE with my given, discovered and nurtured gifts.

It would not be a stretch to categorize this as a version of live performance art. I am doing my art, which I do perform. One way that I’ve delivered concept and technique is via the mixtape. The 1st Qoolstreams of Consciousness was the 1st time I’ve ever done my thing (in my room at home) with eyes on my very private self.

The streams-of-consciousness, you see, are me with my mind in motion + concurrent and recurring self-coaching thoughts and phrases + photos & images of my whole life, public and private. Because all of that information is constantly flowing through my mind as I play.

The Qool Marv vibe on full display – you’ll see how I sound inside.

I wonder, what will be your take?

Gift yourself, please, my love is free.

On October 10 2023, 7:30am, I was on an operating table at NYU Langone, to have open heart surgery because I had an aortic aneurysm and my aorta needed to be replaced.

14 days and 11.5 hours later...

On October 24 2023, 7:00pm, I was back in the booth at Soho House Manhattan and I recorded this with all my refurbished heart.

Artist Kambui Olujimi is pleased to present North Star: Conversations on Boundlessness, a two-day symposium at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts from October 7 – 8, 2023 that will kick off the artists’ multifaceted long-term project, North Star: Meditations on Weightlessness.

The symposium will include the premiere of the film, North of Never. Commissioned by Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and generously supported by the Mellon Foundation, North of Never showcases seven people from the African diaspora experiencing weightlessness on a zero-gravity parabolic flight for over seven cumulative minutes. The film features video footage of the flight, along with interviews where the participants share their unique experiences. They discuss ideas of the chaotic nature of freedom, what it is to be lost in one’s own body, and the collective phenomena of this moment. Artist Kambui Olujimi, and Vice President of Artistic Programming at Lincoln Center Jordana Leigh, will host a talkback following the premiere.

“What happens when boundlessness is not an anomaly but the context of our existence?,” says Kambui Olujimi.
