Episode 234: Guinness is my favorite pint, few people know the history. On December 31st, 1759 Arthur Guinness signed a Nine Thousand Year lease on St. James’s Gate Brewery in Dublin. Arthur Guinness was a philanthropist, an innovator and entrepreneur.

Arthur Guinness felt it was important to give back to the city that hosts the brewery. In the 1800s, the Guinness family contributed to the restoration of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. St. Stephen’s Green, a private green reserved for the city’s wealthiest residents, was purchased by Arthur Edward Guinness and donated to the City so the green space could be enjoyed by everyone in the area.

The brewery paid 10% higher than the average industrial wage in Dublin at the time. In 1870, a medical centre was established to provide free healthcare not just to employees but to their families. This generosity still exists today. Next time you grab a pint, smile and remind yourself of all the  great things Guinness did to make the world a better place.
