Episode 46: Greg Miller- Hamline University and Armstrong High School

Brett is joined by newly hired Monticello High School head coach Dillon Naumann. Dillon talks about what his first summer was like as a head coach and what he is looking to accomplish in year one. Then they talked about offensive philosophy with an emphasis on teaching teams how to play fast through transition offense. Then they talked about how Dillon breaks down and teaches pressing. 

Brett is joined by former Armstrong High School head coach and current Hamline University assistant coach Greg Miller. Greg talks about offensive and defensive philosophy, practice planning, program building, and what he's learned during his coaching journey.

Brett has four coaches on that participated in the Ray Allen Challenge and then they have a discussion about their plans during the upcoming winter season during a pandemic. Dave Flom from Eden Prairie High School, Chris Hopkins from St. Agnes High School, Joe Burger from Edina High School, and Tim Sension from the Breck School join this episode. The four coaches talk about their experience participating in the Ray Allen Challenge and then go into detail about how they plan to approach this season and ways they can help educate and mitigate the spread while coaching during a pandemic.

Mankato East High School head coach Joe Madson joins to talk about offensive and defensive philosophy, team building, mental training, and planning for opponents. 

Brett is joined by six-time state champion Larry McKenzie. Larry talks about building the basketball programs at Patrick Henry and North high schools in Minneapolis and what work went into achieving success at those schools. Larry talks about the expectations and standards of his program and how he instills those standards as part of their culture. He then talks about building relationships with his players and getting them to trust him. Finally Larry talks about practice planning, offensive philosophy, defensive philosophy, and game preparation.

John sits down to talk with Brett to summarize the October 1st MSHSL board meeting and what it means for boys and girls basketball. He talks about the plan that was decided, what will happen with spectators, and a post season outlook. Then John gives advice for coaches and players.

Brett is joined by East Ridge High School head coach Josh Peltier. Josh talks about taking over a new program and what he looked to instal at East Ridge right away. Then Josh talks practice planning, game preparation, and the core values of his program. Finally Josh talks about his defensive philosophy and ball screen coverage. 

Brett is joined by Cambridge-Isanti High School head coach Mike McDonald. Mike talks about coaching against his son in a section final, evolving as a coach, and how social media has impacted his coaching. Then Mike goes into detail on Cambridge's HAVOC philosophy, teaching shooting throughout his program, and playing with a fast pace. Finally Mike talks about Cambridge's Matchup defense and defensive principles of his program.

Brett is joined by Prep Hoops and Breakdown Sports writer and Minnesota high school basketball aficionado Ryan James. Ryan talks about the work that goes into his player rankings, recapping the AAU season, and summer stock risers. Then Ryan goes over his preseason top 5 from each class, a sleeper from each class, and the race for Mr. Basketball/McDonald award.

Brett is joined by St. Mary's University (MN) assistant men's basketball coach Kyle Brown. Kyle discusses his newsletter "In The Gaps" and gives an overview of what he's found in his research. Then Kyle talks about what coaches look for in recruits and how high school coaches can help in the recruiting process. Finally Kyle goes into detail on ball screen offense, modern offense, and trending offensive actions that can work at the high school level.
