Episode 6 - Teen Suicide - Talk to your sons

Episode 6 - Teen Suicide - Talk to your sons

Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among 15-24 year olds. More teens are admitted to hospital for suicide attempts than any other age group. Males are at a higher risk for suicide with male youths dying by suicide 2-3 times more often than females.

Opening the lines of communication with our sons becomes especially important when we look at the statistics that boys are less likely to reach out for help than females when in distress and are more likely to succeed in committing suicide when attempted. Developing and maintaining open lines of communication with our teens (males and females) is imperative in order to identify the warning signs for suicide. If we as parents do not have the relevant information to identify whether or not our child has the warning signs, how can we determine if our child is at risk for attempting suicide? Talking openly and honestly with our teens will help increase the chance that we will see the possible warning signs for suicidal thoughts and get them the help they need as early as possible.

Listen to this very important podcast for tips on how to connect with your teen, what to listen for and what to do if you think your child is at risk for self-harm.
