    About this Episode

We all know that grief and tragedy are part of this fallen world we live in. So, what can we do to find ways to choose joy in the midst of the pain of grief?

Our guest on today's show is photographer and musical artist Amanda Currie. Amanda tells her story of walking through grief for most of her life, including the loss of her younger brother when he was only 20 years old. She talks about recognizing that grief and joy are often intertwined together and how she is able to find joy in moments of grief. From helping photograph joyful moments for parents who have experienced the loss of a child to laughing with family at joyful memories at her brothers funeral, Amanda shares how she learns to not only find those moments, but experience joy and grief fully as she walks through life.

Amanda provided work on the Before We Said Hello Project, and now she works to provide words of guidance and affirmation as others walk through their own tragedies in life. She wants everyone to know that God never puts this grief upon our lives, but He is with us in His infinite love through every step on our journey.

    Who is Amanda Currie?

Amanda Currie has a music education degree, spending the last 20 years working in the field of music, both teaching and performing. We are so blessed to have Grammy Nominated Singer/Songwriter couple Sam and Becca Mizell on this episode of the Music for the Soul Podcast. From there, they talk about becoming a singing/songwriting duo with songs that "ache" with the emotions of life's trials.

Sam discusses why he thought it was so important to focus more on the heart and soul of a song than it was to write something that he thought would sell well. Becca also explains how she doesn't see herself as a performer, but rather someone who uses her gifts in singing to share messages that provide healing, hope and inspiration for what God can do in our lives.

Jolene then took her experiences and wrote several books including Sharing Love Abundantly with Special Needs Families: The Five Love Languages® for Parents Raising Children with Disabilities. She says the reason she felt called to write these books was so devastated parents could begin to place their hope in God’s dream for their children.

Don't settle for shallow. Those are the words today's guest left with us as we concluded our discussion. At Music for the Soul, we write songs that speak honestly about some of life's toughest challenges, because we know that songs can help rescue a hurting soul.

Our guest on today's show is Gospel Music Hall of Fame member, Grammy and Dove Award winning lyricist, Gloria Gaither. She also talks about the importance of having horizontal praise in addition to vertical praise.

Gloria explains that many people proclaim that "God is great", but don't apply God's greatness to their lives and their neighbors. We need to not only know that God is great, but WHY God is great and HOW we can apply that to serving others in God's name.

As a result, they have created a lasting legacy in the field of gospel music and beyond. Gloria also traveled with the Bill Gaither Trio for twenty years before she turned to her graduate work in literature. In recognition of Gloria and Bill’s vast contribution to the gospel music industry, they were named ASCAP’s Christian Songwriters of the Century in 2000. Also on their long list of special honors with Grammy Awards and Dove Awards, is their induction into Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

Gloria has long been a student of literature, with special interest in the works of John Steinbeck. She has contributed papers and reviews on his writing in a variety of academic settings. She has been published in the Steinbeck Academic Journal both in the United States and abroad. She has written more than 40 books, including titles for adults and children, created scripts for over 100 videos in the chart-topping Homecoming series, and for 15 years she led the vision for Homecoming Magazine, an innovative publication for which she guided the themes, wrote features, and did milestone interviews.
