    Welcome to The Peaceful Home Podcast. On todays Episode, I threw back to an interview with a dad. I know, so off brand, but the beauty here is that this dad, author and Business Exec, who wrote his a book, 8 Steps to Overcoming Everyday Adversity, as a letter to his kids. 


    Traveling for his job, on a plane multiple times a week Christopher decided to write a letter to his son for after he is gone. The lessons and wisdom he believes his son, and then later his daughter, would need from him long after he is no longer here. 


    A lovely focus on the legacy we leave behind, the way we lead by example and how your kids can benefit from your wisdom for years to come.

    Sometimes responses under stress make no sense to us, or the people around us. And that is because your nervous system is wired for one thing, Survival. 


    It is often why we look back at moments in life and say things like “I should have run away,” because we don’t choose how we respond. 


    And when we experience ongoing stress or trauma, the system can get stuck in a fight/flight/freeze response. Potentially experiencing ongoing chronic stress responses in the body. Leaving you exhausted, struggling with brain fog and even physical health complications.

    In parenting (and in life) we tend to have expectations of what we believe our kids are capable of. For most parents, this is rooted in our own stories of inadequacy, rejection, and judgment. 


    We react from fear and rescue, fix and take the pressure off. Oh, Johnny can’t possibly clean up the living room, he is stressed and needs to relax. Or Jane is too little to be expected to keep her hands to herself so you are left policing every interaction Jane has with every human on the planet, including her siblings. Or, Bobby has an issue with food textures, he won’t eat that, when a separate meal is not prepared by you.


    But if you raise the bar, and recognize that they are capable of more than you anticipate, you give your kids space to not only surprise you but surprise themselves too, this is the space of growth. When we stretch ourselves outside of what we thought we could do.
