    Podcast Summary

    • Government's Five Promises for 2023The UK government has pledged to reduce NHS waiting times, address illegal migration, and rebuild trust in politics. However, some promises, like halving inflation, may not be as groundbreaking as they seem, and the end of energy support for businesses could lead to higher costs for consumers.

Rishi Sunak, the UK's Chancellor, has outlined five key promises for the government in 2023, including reducing waiting times in the NHS, addressing illegal migration, and rebuilding trust in politics. However, some of these promises, such as halving inflation by the end of the year, may not be as groundbreaking as they seem, as economic forecasts already suggest inflation will decrease. Additionally, the government's energy support for businesses, which has helped keep energy costs down for consumers, is set to end in March, raising concerns about the impact on industries still recovering from the pandemic and the effects of global events like the war in Ukraine. While some costs may not be passed on to consumers, reduced government support could lead to higher prices for retail goods. Overall, the government's actions will be closely watched to see if they truly reflect the people's priorities and address their concerns about the cost of living and essential services.

    • UK Culture Secretary Reverses Course on Channel 4 PrivatizationThe UK government has abandoned plans to privatize Channel 4, focusing instead on addressing winter health concerns and ensuring the channel's sustainability through alternative means.

The UK's Culture Secretary has recommended against the privatization of Channel 4, marking a U-turn from previous plans announced under Boris Johnson's government. Michelle Donlin believes there are better ways to ensure the channel's sustainability. This decision might have been influenced by the Sunak government's focus on dealing with other pressing issues, such as potential shortages of cough and cold medicines due to winter bugs and concerns about high levels of flu and COVID still circulating. Despite the changing political landscape, certain things remain constant, like the need for health insurance. UnitedHealthcare TriTerm Medical plans offer flexible, budget-friendly coverage that lasts nearly 3 years in some states. Episode 8. Mark Thomas of Mark Thomas's Lockdown Check-up

“Mark Thomas has moved back in with his mum for the duration of the pandemic. He’s 57 and she’s 85. He says she’s curmudgeonly; she says he’s the most aggravating person on the planet.”

Mark Thomas, during normal times, is a stand-up comedian, activist and writer. But 2020 changed everything for him (as it did the rest of us).

He returned home, to live with his mum again, during the first lockdown of the pandemic in the UK. Such a set of circumstances would be like gold dust to a joke-hungry comic but Mark took the opportunity to do something more.

In Mark Thomas’s Lockdown Check-up he charts the experiences of his mum and NHS healthcare workers on the frontline of the Covid-19 pandemic. From his bedroom, which he describes as having “the facilities of a monk’s cell with the charm of a panic room,” Mark calls healthcare professionals across England to discuss their work caring for patients under exceptional circumstances.

From the lack of PPE to grappling with the rigid hierarchy of the medical professional, to communication and coping, the conversations seem to carry some therapeutic value for both parties. “I’ve always found the act of creating something incredibly therapeutic,” says Mark.

In this episode of MetaPod, Mark talks to us about what he learned from his conversations with NHS staff and living with his mum during the pandemic.

Honest and heartwarming, but also raw and troubling, Mark recounts the emotions and working conditions that his conversations revealed. He also discusses states of mind and ideal environments for creating and receiving information. You’ll discover his ideal surroundings for creativity include a bit of Vincent Price. Mark also admits how many f-bombs he was asked to cut from the final podcast.

Has 'Small Boats Week' been a disaster for the Tories?

A week that was dedicated to show that the Conservatives have a plan on how to 'stop the boats' has instead been dominated by tragedy - the death of 41 migrants in the sea near Lampedusa while the deputy chair of the Tory party told Channel-crossing migrants to 'f*** off' back to France - and farce - as 39 asylum seekers were removed off barge accommodation just days after moving in due to a bacterial infection in the nearby waters.

Has this week been a major step back for Rishi Sunak in his attempts to fulfil one of his flagship policies? We discuss with Sir Craig Oliver, former director of communications at No.10.

We talk parliamentary standards with Sir Chris Bryant - and Gary Lineker joins us to justify to heartbroken Spurs fan Jon why Harry Kane is right to leave Tottenham for Bayern Munich.
