Exclusive interview with Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, former commanding general US Army Europe

    enMay 29, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Flexibility in Insurance and LifeUnitedHealthcare offers flexible, budget-friendly plans for medical, vision, dental, and more. Mint Mobile drops price of unlimited plan to $15/month. Flexibility is crucial in insurance, business, and military strategy for success.

Flexibility is important, whether it's in yoga or insurance. UnitedHealthcare Insurance Plans, underwritten by Golden Rule Insurance Company, offer flexible and budget-friendly coverage options for medical, vision, dental, and more. These plans can be a good fit for those in transition, such as those between jobs, coming off their parents' plan, starting a full-time business, or missing open enrollment. Meanwhile, in other news, Mint Mobile announced a significant price drop for their unlimited plan, from $30 to $15 a month, for a limited time. This comes after Mint Mobile's legal team confirmed that big wireless companies can raise prices due to inflation, even with ongoing contracts. In the geopolitical sphere, retired Lieutenant General Ben Hodges discussed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and offered insights into Russia's military and political center of gravity. According to Hodges, Russia's military center of gravity lies in its land forces, while its political center of gravity is Putin's personal power. To gain a decisive advantage on the battlefield and win the war, Ukraine needs a military strategy to target these centers of gravity. In summary, flexibility is key in various aspects of life, from insurance to business to military strategy. Whether it's through UnitedHealthcare Insurance Plans, Mint Mobile's price drop, or Ukraine's military approach, being adaptable can lead to success.

    • Russia's Center of Gravity: Infantry, Artillery, and PutinRussia's strength lies in its military might and Putin's autocratic rule, but his willingness to disregard human life and swift decision-making may lead to chaos if defeat is imminent.

Russia's center of gravity lies in its massive infantry and artillery, as well as its autocratic leader, Vladimir Putin. Putin's willingness to spend resources and disregard for human life keeps him believing Russia can win in Ukraine. However, when he realizes defeat is imminent, he's more likely to change the narrative or save his own skin rather than use nuclear weapons. Autocrats like Putin make decisions swiftly when needed. The recent attacks inside Russia, such as drone strikes and airfield strikes, may cause some Russians to question their vulnerability and strengthen Putin's rule in the minds of others. Despite the Kremlin's efforts to mobilize troops, there's a mythology that Russians are willing to endure more than others, but it's unclear how many troops Russia truly has and who controls them. The possibility of chaos, such as a civil war, instigated by groups like the Wagner group and Progyny, is a valid concern if the situation worsens.

    • Putin's focus on mineral resources in Ukraine conflictPutin's primary goal in Ukraine conflict is control of mineral resources for wealth and influence, but internal military strife could weaken Russian forces and Crimea's strategic location remains a major obstacle for Ukraine's victory.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine, particularly around Bakhmut, is not just about territory or resources for Russia's President Putin. His primary focus is on controlling valuable mineral resources, which provide him immense wealth and influence. The upcoming withdrawal of Russian forces from the area around Bakhmut signals Putin's business-oriented approach. However, the internal strife within the Russian military leadership could weaken their combat strength and prevent a cohesive defensive strategy. Crimea, with its strategic location and control over Ukraine's ports, remains a major obstacle for Ukraine's victory. Retaining Crimea would allow Russia to dominate the Black Sea and disrupt Ukraine's export economy for years to come. Therefore, Ukraine's ultimate objective should be to isolate the Crimean Peninsula and liberate it to change the strategic situation in their favor. This could involve advancing towards the Sea of Azov, although this is speculation. Overall, understanding Putin's motivations and the impact of internal Russian military strife, along with the importance of Crimea, provides valuable insights into the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

    • Weakening Russian forces in CrimeaFocus on making Crimea untenable for Russian forces by targeting ships, harbor facilities, and logistics hubs in Sevastopol, forcing repositioning of the Black Sea Fleet. Use precision strikes to cause mass exodus, adapt to electronic warfare, and utilize drones as ammunition.

To weaken Russian forces in the Crimean Peninsula and prevent a nuclear disaster at the Zaporizhzhia power plant, Ukraine should focus on making the peninsula untenable for Russian forces. This can be achieved by targeting ships, harbor facilities, and logistics hubs in Sevastopol with precision weapons, forcing the Black Sea Fleet to reposition. Ukrainian ground forces will eventually need to enter the peninsula, which will be a challenge due to the narrow isthmus. Precision strikes on critical Russian facilities in Crimea could lead to a mass exodus, preventing another attack on the Kerch Bridge. Regarding electronic warfare, while Russia has had success jamming GPS and other systems, Ukraine's ingenuity and technical adaptation will likely allow them to overcome these challenges. As for drones, they could be considered a form of ammunition due to their increasing affordability and varying capabilities. The lines between equipment and ammunition are blurring, and both sides will need to adapt and use quantity to ensure some drones get through for intelligence, targeting, or strike purposes. The US has seen a 30% increase in logistics flows to Ukraine since the full-scale invasion, demonstrating the importance of learning from past Cold War lessons.

    • Transportation and ammunition challenges in the ongoing conflictGovernments need to invest in defense industries to increase production and address transportation and ammunition shortages in conflicts.

The ongoing conflict in Eastern Europe has highlighted the need for improved military mobility and increased ammunition production in the Western world. The lack of sufficient transport capabilities and the sudden high demand for ammunition have become major challenges. For instance, Deutsche Bahn and DB Cargo can only move about 1.5 armored brigades at a time, leaving many armored brigades from the US, Britain, Germany, and the Netherlands competing for commercial rail capacity. Similarly, the demand for artillery ammunition has skyrocketed, with the Ukrainians using more in a month than the West produced in 20 years. To address these issues, governments must demonstrate political will by investing in defense industries to increase production. The US, for example, has already increased its artillery ammunition production from 8,000 rounds per month to 25,000 rounds per year. However, the long-term challenge lies in increasing the production of explosives, as limited supplies are a concern for all parties involved. Despite the logistical challenges faced by Russia, Ukraine is being supported by 50 different nations, with the UK and Germany leading the way in contributions of equipment, ammunition, and financial resources. This support is not what the Kremlin was expecting, making it a significant advantage for Ukraine in this logistical attritional war.

    • Western militaries' efficient supply to Ukraine during conflictWestern militaries' unique culture, training, and unity enable efficient supply to Ukraine amidst Russian interference, while international community's response to war crimes sends a clear message to Russia.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has highlighted the efficiency and effectiveness of Western militaries in supplying equipment and ammunition to Ukraine, despite Russia's attempts to interfere. This industrial-scale operation, which includes the safe and timely delivery of supplies, is a testament to the unique culture and training of Western militaries. Furthermore, the international community's response to the war crimes committed in Ukraine, such as indictments for enablers, sends a clear message to Russia that they cannot act with impunity. Despite challenges and imperfections, the unity of 50 nations in supporting Ukraine and holding Russia accountable is a significant achievement.

    • Failed Deterrence and Consequences of Inaction in UkraineRussia's aggression against Ukraine was met with limited response, emboldening further action. Collecting evidence of war crimes and holding those accountable is important. Mistakes include lack of consequences for previous invasions and failure to act in Syria and Ukraine. Prevent future conflicts by learning from mistakes and taking decisive action.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine is a stark example of failed deterrence and the consequences of inaction. Russia's aggression against Ukraine, starting with the invasion of Crimea in 2014, was met with limited response from the international community, emboldening Russia to continue its aggression. The speakers in this discussion emphasized the importance of collecting evidence of war crimes and holding those responsible accountable. They also discussed the mistakes that led to this situation, including the lack of consequences for Russia's previous invasions and the failure to act more robustly in Syria and Ukraine. It is crucial to learn from these mistakes and take decisive action to prevent similar situations in the future. Ukraine could have done more to prepare for the conflict, but the international community also bears responsibility for failing to deter Russia's aggression.

    • Historical Parallels and Regional Context in Ukraine ConflictUnderstanding historical parallels and regional contexts is crucial for effective support in Ukraine's ongoing conflict. Clear strategic objectives and strong civilian leadership are necessary to prevent prolonged conflict and ensure stability.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine is a complex issue with historical parallels, requiring a more strategic approach and clear political leadership. The speaker draws parallels to historical events such as appeasement and the importance of understanding regional contexts, like the Black Sea region. He also highlights the need for clear strategic objectives and strong civilian leadership to effectively support Ukraine and prevent prolonged conflict. Additionally, the potential impact of the upcoming US election on Ukraine's situation is discussed, emphasizing the importance of continued support and clear objectives.

    • The importance of deterrents and preparedness in international relationsEffective communication, strong alliances, and military readiness are crucial in preventing conflicts and maintaining peace.

The importance of strong deterrents and preparedness in international relations, as demonstrated by the ongoing situation in Ukraine. President Biden's economic record may be strong, but continuing support for Ukraine could help solidify his position and prevent future conflicts. The price of failed deterrents can be significant, and it's crucial for civilian leadership to effectively communicate the importance of military readiness to taxpayers. The UK's leading role in supporting Ukraine with military aid and training has put pressure on the US and set a high standard for other Western countries. Overall, the conversation emphasizes the importance of strong alliances, effective communication, and preparedness in the face of potential threats.

Charities: We have spoken to many charities this year - from Vans Without Borders, to GP Now, to KHARPP - and we receive many messages from listeners asking for recommendations of charities they can support. We include a link to the Ukrainian Institute of London's list of charities and organisations they recommend:
