Exclusive interview with Professor Timothy Snyder, historian

    enDecember 02, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Understanding Conflict: Avoiding Metaphors of StalemateRecognizing that war is not a game of chess and avoiding metaphors of stalemate can help us better understand complex situations and their potential for change.

It's important to be mindful of the metaphors we use when describing complex situations, such as the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Ryan Reynolds discussed how Mint Mobile is cutting its prices despite inflation, debunking the idea that contracts prevent price increases. Meanwhile, in the interview with historian Timothy Snyder on Ukraine the Latest, the importance of avoiding the metaphor of "stalemate" was emphasized. Snyder argued that war is not a game of chess, and the rules that apply to chess do not apply to real-life conflicts. By recognizing this, we can better understand the dynamic nature of the situation and the potential for change. Additionally, Ryan Reynolds promoted Mint Mobile's price drop and 1800flowers.com's celebrations passport for gift giving.

    • Ukraine's Resistance in the Black Sea: A Significant Development OverlookedUkraine's resistance in the Black Sea is a significant development, despite being overshadowed by terms like 'stalemate' and 'fatigue.' Ukraine's progress towards joining the EU is crucial, and its operational successes should not be overlooked.

The summer's naval battle in the Black Sea between Ukraine and Russia, resulting in the opening of a corridor for commercial grain trade, was a significant development that was largely overlooked due to the use of terms like "stalemate" and "fatigue." These terms distract from the ongoing conflict and shift the focus towards our own feelings and perceptions, allowing us to distance ourselves from the situation. However, Ukraine's resistance and progress towards joining the European Union are crucial aspects of its future, regardless of territorial control. The European Union's most influential member, West Germany, joined despite not fully controlling its territory, demonstrating that military occupation does not prevent a country from joining these organizations. Ukraine's operational successes should not be overlooked, and its resistance is the key to its European future.

    • Long-term battle between Ukraine and RussiaThe West's slow response to supplying Ukraine with resources prolongs the conflict and causes suffering. Russia's capabilities and motivations are complex and require nuanced understanding.

The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia is likely to be a long-term battle, with the economic advantage of the Western world potentially tipping the scale in favor of Ukraine. However, the slow response from Western countries in supplying Ukraine with necessary resources has prolonged the conflict and caused unnecessary suffering. Additionally, there is a misperception in the West about Russia's capabilities and motivations. While some view Russia as a technocratic and predictable place, others underestimate its military potential and cultural significance. It is crucial to recognize that ideas and ideology play a significant role in Russian foreign policy and that Russia should not be viewed as an annex to Russian culture but as an independent entity.

    • Historian's personal experiences challenge assumptions about Russia and UkraineHistorian's firsthand experiences challenge assumptions about Russia's consolidation and Ukraine's instability, highlighting the importance of historical context and specificity in understanding conflicts

The assumption of Russia as a more consolidated nation than Ukraine, which has influenced international relations and perceptions, may be based on cultural stereotypes rather than empirical reality. As a historian, I've spent decades studying Ukraine and have formed personal connections to its history. My experiences of visiting Ukraine and seeing its history firsthand, particularly in the context of recent conflicts, have been profound. The destruction of libraries and archives, as well as the echoes of past atrocities, serve as stark reminders of the importance of understanding historical context. The parallels between past and present conflicts, such as those in Chernihiv and Bucha, underscore the need for specificity and territoriality in historical analysis. Ultimately, being a historian has given me a unique perspective on the complexities of history and its relevance to the present.

    • Understanding Ukraine's History and TransformationExploring Ukraine's past deepens appreciation for its transformation and highlights the importance of generational transformation for its success.

The history of atrocities in Ukraine serves as a reminder of what's possible and helps us understand how perpetration takes place. Traveling around Ukraine with colleagues and friends, especially in the south, has deepened the speaker's appreciation for the country's history and its transformation into productive agricultural land. Another key insight gained during this time is the importance of a generational transformation in Ukraine, with the current generation in their thirties and forties playing significant roles in the country's success. This contrasts with Russia, where the older generation has suppressed the middle generation, making it harder for them to achieve in life. The speaker also emphasizes the importance of remembering and investigating the past, as the information uncovered now will be crucial for historians in the future.

    • A turning point for Ukraine's identityThe war in Ukraine has catalyzed a shift in how Ukraine is perceived, from a post-Soviet entity to a unique entity with its own identity and agency, leading to a more nuanced and confident exploration of its history.

The ongoing war in Ukraine has been a traumatic experience for the younger generation, but it has also served as a catalyst for them to break through and gain self-understanding, confidence, and a sense of resistance. This war has marked a turning point in the way Ukraine is perceived, moving from being viewed as a post-Soviet entity that was a watered-down version of Russia, to being recognized as a unique entity with its own identity and agency. The defensive mode of asserting Ukraine's existence and place in the world is giving way to an exploratory mode, where scholars are making bold moves to understand how Ukraine could exist and be a part of the puzzle of world history. The transformation in the understanding of Ukraine is evident in the shift from obscure topics to a much broader revision of Ukraine's history. The war has put agency into Ukraine's story, allowing for a more nuanced and confident exploration of its past and present.

    • Examining historical events from different perspectives adds depth and complexityReevaluating historical events from various locations or time periods broadens our understanding and reveals new connections.

Our perspective on historical events can significantly change when we reexamine them from the lens of different locations or time periods. For instance, viewing the Holodomor as the central event in Soviet history or tracing the history of the Holocaust into Ukraine alters our understanding of these events. This principle applies to various periods, even reaching back to ancient history. When we make these connections, we add depth and complexity to the narrative. Moreover, there's been ongoing reflection within the academic community about the field's implicit colonial past and its implications for the study of history. Scholars have been reconsidering their roles and biases, particularly in relation to Russia and the former Soviet Union, and Ukraine's place within that narrative. As for the role of an objective historian and a subjective actor, it's essential to acknowledge the different roles we play. While there are tensions, they're not necessarily irreconcilable. By being able to navigate these roles thoughtfully, we can enrich our scholarship and public engagement. Drawing inspiration from the traditions of Eastern European historians who have successfully reconciled public work and scholarship, I believe it's possible to make meaningful contributions to the field while staying committed to both aspects.

    • The intersection of engagement and historical knowledgeHistorical knowledge enhances engagement and vice versa, creating a productive interplay. Embrace the tension and work towards positive outcomes.

Engagement and historical knowledge can enhance each other in meaningful ways. The speaker, a historian, shares how his experiences in Ukraine, including talking to injured soldiers, have made him a better historian. Conversely, having historical knowledge can help him make distinctions and judgments in the present. He emphasizes that rather than viewing these perspectives as conflicting, they should be embraced and made productive. The speaker also discusses his involvement with United 24, President Zelensky's fundraising platform for Ukraine, and how his historical background influenced his decision to help rebuild a library in Chernihiv. He acknowledges the potential for tension but encourages working with it to create positive outcomes. Overall, the speaker's insights demonstrate the value of both engagement and historical knowledge in understanding and contributing to the world.

    • Proactively preventing crisis damageDuring crises, taking proactive measures can save resources and prevent greater damage. Listen to local expertise, innovate, and adapt quickly to protect communities.

During times of crisis, proactive measures can make a significant impact. The speaker shares his experience of helping Ukraine prevent library destruction by implementing drone defense instead of rebuilding after the fact. He emphasizes the importance of listening to local expertise and the beauty of seeing people come together to innovate and protect their communities quickly. The speaker also highlights the impressive work of Ukraine's digital transformation minister, Mikhail Fedorov, and President Zelensky, who have shown great leadership and adaptability in the face of conflict. Ultimately, the speaker encourages the audience to lean forward and take action when they can, as even small contributions can make a difference.

    • Zelensky's Unique Leadership Style: Intellectual Curiosity and AuthenticityZelensky stands out as a unique leader due to his intellectual curiosity, authenticity, and ability to toggle between different skillsets in intellectual debates.

Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, stands out as a unique leader due to his genuine enthusiasm for engaging in meaningful conversations and his willingness to listen. During a lengthy discussion, Zelensky surprised the speaker by expressing sincere interest in the topic of freedom and its philosophical implications. Rather than dominating the conversation or appearing in control, Zelensky displayed intellectual curiosity and authenticity, even when the topic veered away from his usual political sphere. He demonstrated the ability to toggle between different skillsets and hold his own in intellectual debates, while also being open to new ideas. Zelensky's confidence and self-awareness suggest that he continues to grow and evolve as a leader.

    • Unique feeling in Kyiv due to lack of international presenceExplore Ukrainian art and culture, especially embroidered shirts. Read 'The Amazons' and 'The Horse, The Wheel and Something Else' for insights into ancient history. Check out Lawrence Friedman's substack for contemporary perspectives.

Despite Kyiv being a beautiful European metropolis with a rich history and culture, the lack of international presence, especially Americans, creates a unique and strange feeling. During a visit, the speaker found joy in supporting Ukrainian art and crafts, particularly embroidered shirts. He encourages a new fashion trend and recommends reading "The Amazons" by Adrienne Mare for insights into ancient Scythia and women warriors, or "The Horse, The Wheel and Something Else" by David W. Anthony for a counter history of the bronze age in Ukraine. The speaker is currently fascinated by the classical world in Ukraine and suggests Lawrence Friedman's substack page for contemporary perspectives. Overall, Ukraine's unique history and significance in European civilization make it a fascinating and hyper-typical study in world history.
