    • Celebrating Unique Fatherly Memories and ImpactFathers make a profound impact through their presence, support, and love, creating unforgettable memories for their children.

Fatherhood comes in all shapes and sizes, and the experiences and memories shared between fathers and their children can be both profound and hilarious. During a special Father's Day episode, stories were shared about the unique ways fathers have impacted their lives. From making sure their families were well taken care of, to creating unforgettable memories, the role of a father was celebrated. Some fathers went above and beyond, like the one who created a tracking system for his wife's breastfeeding or the one who paused to tell his son that werewolves were real. Others, like the one who had flowers delivered to school on his son's birthday, may have had unconventional methods, but their impact was felt. Overall, the stories highlighted the importance of being present, supportive, and loving, making for a heartwarming and entertaining Father's Day celebration.

    • Parenting: Being Present and PreparedEffective parenting involves showing up, being in the moment, and providing valuable advice to help children navigate life's challenges.

Effective parenting involves being present, prepared, and providing good advice. James shared his experience of using a spreadsheet system for parenting that didn't work out as well as he hoped. He contrasted this with the more laid-back approach of another father, who encouraged showing up and being in the moment. Both fathers offered valuable advice, such as the importance of a firm handshake, emotional vulnerability, and learning to drive various types of vehicles. The conversation also touched on the idea that things can get messy before they get tidy and that starting out on a strong footing is important. The fathers also emphasized the importance of taking care of victims and being willing to tackle difficult topics. Overall, the conversation highlighted the importance of being present and prepared as a parent, and providing good advice to help children navigate life's challenges.

    • Understanding grace and the importance of being a good fatherEvery day presents new opportunities to learn and grow, and even the hardest experiences can lead to valuable insights. Commit to personal growth for a better parenting experience and life in general.

Becoming a parent is a challenging and continuous learning experience. During their conversation, the father shared his journey of understanding grace and the importance of showing up and being vulnerable. He also spoke about his experience of discovering how to be a good father, which led him to realize that the best thing he could do for his child was not to abandon or die young, but to keep learning and growing. This conversation highlights the importance of resilience, vulnerability, and a commitment to personal growth in both parenting and life in general. It's a reminder that every day presents new opportunities to learn and grow, and that even the hardest experiences can lead to valuable insights.

    • Holding space for loved ones during anxiety and griefUnderstand that everyone grieves differently and encourage open, vulnerable conversations to build a strong and supportive relationship.

Everyone experiences anxiety and grief differently, and it's important to hold space for loved ones during these challenging times. The speaker, John Dalley, emphasized this when discussing his own experiences with anxiety and the loss of his mother. He wrote a book, "Redefining Anxiety," to help people understand anxiety and how to cope, regardless of age or background. During the call, John offered advice to Matthew, who was grieving the loss of his mother and struggling to grieve together with his wife, a trauma ICU nurse. John acknowledged that everyone grieves differently and encouraged Matthew to continue holding space for his wife and having open and vulnerable conversations. This approach, although uncomfortable, is essential for building a strong and supportive relationship.

    • Finding comfort in friendship during griefGrieving is a personal process, find healthy ways to honor your loved one, closure is a long-term process, be patient and compassionate with yourself and loved ones.

Grieving the loss of a loved one is a unique and personal process that can be challenging when family members are also coping with the same loss. The speaker shared his experience of finding solace in a small group of friends, acknowledging that the grieving process is still ongoing and raw. He also mentioned the difficulty of grieving differently than his father, who has been married to the deceased for over 40 years. The speaker emphasized that it's essential to find healthy ways to grieve and honor the loved one, such as writing letters or creating a private email account. The speaker also highlighted that closure is a long-term process and that it's crucial not to attach shame or frustration to the grieving process. Overall, the conversation underscored the importance of being patient and compassionate with oneself and loved ones during the grieving process.

    • Differentiating Personal and Secondary TraumaProfessionals in trauma-related fields must distinguish their own trauma from work-related traumas to prevent emotional buildup and burnout. Spouses should provide a safe space for processing, while trauma workers should seek support from colleagues.

When working in a trauma-related field, it's crucial for professionals to differentiate between their own personal trauma and the secondary trauma they experience from their work. Neglecting personal pain can lead to emotional buildup and potential burnout. Spouses of trauma workers should be aware of this and create a safe space for their partners to process their emotions. Additionally, trauma workers should avoid burdening their spouses with work-related traumas and instead seek support from colleagues or trusted friends. By communicating openly and respectfully, couples can navigate this challenging dynamic and maintain a strong bond.

    • Checking in and expressing support during loss and difficult conversationsConsistently expressing love and support during loss and addressing insensitive comments with compassion and accountability can lead to growth and healing.

Dealing with loss and difficult conversations requires consistency, compassion, and communication. In the context of losing a loved one, continuing to check-in with those affected and expressing love and support can help in the healing process. Regarding insensitive comments in the workplace, it's crucial to address the issue directly and hold individuals accountable for their actions, regardless of their background or upbringing. Creating a respectful and inclusive work environment is essential for maintaining a productive and harmonious team. In both cases, being open, empathetic, and consistent can lead to growth and finding meaning in challenging situations.

    • Maintaining Team Unity: Three Threats and SolutionsMaintain team unity by having zero tolerance for theft, racial/cultural disparagement, and sexual harassment. Focus on doing the right thing, even if it's difficult, and remember that your actions reflect on your team.

As a manager or leader, maintaining team unity is crucial for productivity and success. Three things can quickly dissolve team unity: theft and dishonesty, racial or cultural disparagement, and sexual harassment. It's essential to have zero tolerance for these behaviors and to establish clear values and boundaries as a leader. Managing other people's pain and trauma is a part of the job, but you cannot control the outcome. It's important to hold your ground, but not through confrontation or muscle. Instead, focus on doing the right thing, even if it means making difficult decisions or losing productivity from one person. Remember, your actions reflect on you and your team, and everyone is watching.

    • Setting clear boundaries for unacceptable behaviorLeaders should directly address instances of racial and gender disparagement, using both company policies and personal values as guiding principles. Extend grace to those who may not realize the impact of their words and use these moments as opportunities for growth and education.

As a leader, it's essential to set clear boundaries and expectations when it comes to unacceptable behavior in the workplace, particularly regarding racial and gender disparagement. The speaker in this conversation emphasizes the importance of creating a positive work environment where everyone feels respected and valued. He encourages team leaders to address any instances of such behavior directly, using both company policies and personal values as guiding principles. He also suggests extending grace to those who may not realize the impact of their words and using these moments as opportunities for growth and education. Ultimately, the goal is to foster a team dynamic where individuals are viewed as projects to be nurtured and supported, rather than sources of conflict or negativity.

    • Father's Day Special: Celebrating Dad Songs and BondsCelebrate Father's Day by sharing love and appreciation with your dad through music and communication. Cherish your bond and be a part of a loving family unit.

No matter what, it's important to hold onto your values and beliefs, just like Tina Turner did with her iconic song "The Best." During this Father's Day episode, the conversation veered from discussing the "worst" dad songs to sharing favorite ones, reminding us of the importance of expressing love and appreciation to our fathers. Whether your relationship with your dad is great or not so great, it's essential to cherish the bond and be a part of a loving family unit. So, take a moment to find your favorite dad song and call your dad to share the love. And remember, as always, be nice to each other, stay in school, and don't do drugs. Happy Father's Day from The Doctor John Delaney Show.

Ep. 11 - Jessi's Story: Her Story of Being Adopted, Coping at the Age of 16 with the Sudden Loss of Her Mom, and Parenting a Nonverbal Autistic Son

Today, I'm chatting with Jessi Caldwell, my sister-in-law. Jessi wears many hats – she's a devoted wife, a nurturing mother, and a corporate learning executive.

At just 8 months old, Jessi's life took a profound turn as she found her forever home through adoption. At 16 the sudden loss of her mother reshaped the landscape of her world. But Jessi, being the resilient soul she is, pressed on.

In the chapters of her life that followed, Jessi tied the knot and welcomed three beautiful children into her life, including a nonverbal autistic son. Her story is a testament to the twists and turns life throws at us.

Join us as Jessi reflects on her self-identity through the lenses of being adopted, coping as a teenager with the loss of her mother, and the challenges of parenting a nonverbal autistic son.

Ep 11: Motherload of Grief Pt 2 of 2

Word To Your Mothers welcomes back guest Maria to the podcast. Maria is a dear friend of host Sondra Doty. Maria helps others by sharing on grief associated with event-based traumas, as well as chronic traumas (special needs, chronic illness and more.)

An educator for more than a decade, Maria is a speaker, facilitator and mentor for women's grief recovery; she's led Biblical finances and discipleship groups, and she's a support group leader for mothers and educators. Maria has been involved one way or another in youth and children's ministry for many decades and has a background in business administration, marketing, theological studies, communications, small group development, and education. She loves to read, write, travel and have candid conversations with sincere people. Maria has been married for nearly 30 years and is a parent to three teens and young adults.

This episode is part two of the series. Host Sondra Doty and guest Maria continue their conversation around grief and getting the appropriate help-as informed by their own personal circumstances and research.

Sondra and Maria explain: We have to be open to getting all kinds of help to gain healing. Gather resources from many different directions and areas. Sometimes, we get stuck on things that don't matter and block us. We can easily get in our own way-preventing us from getting the appropriate help.

If you have gone through a traumatic experience, then get help from someone who specializes in that specific trauma. Think of it like this: You wouldn't consult a foot doctor to treat something going wrong with your eyes. Also important is to realize that vulnerability in your grieving helps bring you a community of people that want to support you. Consider how you might be vulnerable and share the best you know how in that moment. What you share helps others serve you well in circumstances they might not have experienced.

And for those trying to comfort a person grieving, know that you can easily and unknowingly give too much information- so much that is can overwhelm that person. Give resources when you sense people are ready. Always ask questions first. You don't have to be the end all, be all to people. Sometimes, all you have to do is sit with someone, say nothing and hold their hand. Take care not to judge how people are getting help, as well.

For your action step, Sondra and Maria would like to encourage you read the book: What Grieving People Wish You Knew (about what really helps and what really hurts), by Nancey Guthrie
