    About this Episode

More than 40 years ago, a bunch of college kids from the USA squared off on a sheet of ice in Lake Placid, NY at the 1980 Winter Olympics against a heavily-favored Soviet Union squad.

These two teams played an exhibition just a month earlier that ended in a 10-3 Soviet victory so many didn't give the Americans a chance. But this game that would turn out to be arguably the most important sporting event of the 20th century.

In the moment when it was happening though, the powers that be at the Olympic Games didn't even deem it worthy of a primetime TV slot so much of the country saw the game on tape delay. If there was any game worth the wait it was this one, and it was awesome to go back and watch for the podcast.

Join us as we take you back to that historic night in New York. On this episode we discuss:
    • The dominance of the Soviets leading up to this matchup
    • Al Michaels and his iconic performance behind the mic
    • The final round format for medals
    • Periods or quarters?
    • Jim Craig is a beast
    • Why did the USSR coach bench his all-world goalie?
    • Ticket prices for the big game
    • The strange Olympic hockey format that has led to a lot of confusion over the years
    • Herb Brooks
    • Why the game was tape-delayed

We'll talk this and much more on the show. If you want to see it as it aired on ABC that night in 1980, check out our website here: https://distantreplaypodcast.com/ep-66-1980-olympic-hockey-team-usa-vs-soviet-union/

September 30, 2018 - Ryder Cup Singles: Rory McIlroy vs Justin Thomas
On the eve of the 2023 Ryder Cup, we go back to the final day of the last Ryder Cup played in Europe. The 2018 competition was 10-6 in favor of the Euros heading into Sunday and play began with as good of a singles match as you'll get at the Ryder Cup. Rory McIlroy, ranked 6th in the world, faced Justin Thomas, ranked 4th in the world, in a match both teams hoped would set the tone for the rest of the day.

We went back to watch that 2018 singles match and look back on Thomas' 1-up win. Here's some of what we discuss after seeing it again:
    • Who was on those two teams compared to this year, including world-beater at the time Francisco Molinari.
    • The setup and home course advantage Europeans are so great at.
    • Was that first hole one of Justin Thomas' best-ever?
    • Rory being Rory on the greens at big moments.
    • Rahm vs Tiger in singles was the nail in the coffin for the US.

But this game had everything else - turnovers, long touchdowns, a controversial ending, and some stats that seem incredible today.

Join us for the story of this Washington Redskins vs New York Giants game from 1966 and how one of the 14 balls lost that day is now up for auction. Plus, we'll take you back to one of the most important NFL seasons in the league's history and tell you the wild story about how the Atlanta Falcons ended up in the NFL instead of the AFL.
