Figuring Out Life with Uncle Keith from One Tree Hill: Mental Health, Parenting, and More

    en-usMay 23, 2023

    About this Episode

One Tree Hill actor Craig Sheffer joins me this week on Trying To Figure It Out. You may know him better as Uncle Keith, the character that tragically died in season 3; we talk all about One Tree Hill and the culture behind the scenes. Craig shares what it was like working with director Mark Schwahn and the control that Schwahn tried to maintain over the cast. We also discuss what Craig has been up to since the show and he reveals some of his own mental health challenges and how he managed a long depressive period. We wrap up with Al P's Three as always and pick three songs that remind us of One Tree Hill.

Figuring It Out with One Tree Hill's Infamous Villain: Paul Johansson

Paul Johansson of One Tree Hill joins me this week on Trying To Figure It Out. We discuss how Paul went from playing professional basketball to joining the cast of One Tree Hill and which character he originally wanted to audition for. Paul played the infamous villain of One Tree Hill, Dan Scott, and he talks about the toll that the character took on his mental health.

You'll learn some of Paul's stage secrets about how he approached Dan's character and some of the motivations behind Dan's actions. We talk about *that episode* and Paul reveals how difficult it was for him to kill off one of his best friends on the show, Craig Sheffer.

If you're a One Tree Hill fan, you'll love this episode and the previous episode with Craig Sheffer (May 23, 2023).

Bringing The Heat with CEO Sarah Gardner

Bringing The Heat with CEO Sarah Gardner

CEO and child protection advocate Sarah Gardner joins me this week to talk all about safety online. Sarah leads the Heat Initiative, a company built to pressure Apple to remove child sexual abuse material from all of its platforms. This is definitely an intense episode, but Sarah explains the issue in a very accessible way and I learned so much from her.

We discuss exactly what child sexual abuse material entails and how many children it affects, as well as the exact moment Sarah knew she needed to do something about this problem. Sarah explains how both children's safety and users' privacy can be maintained through the detection of imagery in iCloud and we talk about why it has been so difficult to convince Apple to implement this feature.

We end with a conversation about the ethics of family vloggers and what it means to share your kids online for the whole world to see.

Content warning: Today's episode focuses on issues around child sexual abuse. If you are comfortable and able to listen, you will learn so much from Sarah this episode. However, if this topic isn't for you, feel free to skip this one.

Owning the Stage with DJ Samantha Michelle

Owning the Stage with DJ Samantha Michelle

Internationally-renowned DJ Samantha Michelle joins Trying To Figure It Out this week from New York City. Music has always been my passion, so I am so excited to bring you today's episode. Samantha tells the story of how she wound up on aux one night at a club and which song she played that eventually led to the start of her music career. Samantha has since opened for Duran Duran, Mark Ronson, and Miley Cyrus, and she shares what it's like performing with such legends.

We discuss common assumptions about DJing and talk about drug use in the space, sexism that Samantha's experienced while working, and what she'll tell you if you request Wu-Tang Clan when she's playing a disco set.

This is an inspiring conversation about stepping into your creativity, finding your voice, and feeling empowered to lead the life that you want to live.

Alcoholism, Grief, and Finding Solutions After Tragedy with Lily Geiger

Alcoholism, Grief, and Finding Solutions After Tragedy with Lily Geiger

TTFIO is back this week with badass businesswoman Lily Geiger.

Lily is the founder of Figlia, a non-alcoholic aperitivo brand born from Lily's personal experience with alcoholism within her family. Lily's father passed away from alcoholism when she was twenty and we discuss what it was like growing up in that environment. Her life had so many extra challenges because of what her father was going through, but she also expresses deep empathy for his struggle.

With so much change and pressure, deciding how you want to engage with alcohol in your twenties can be difficult. Lily and I talk about transitioning from college drinking culture to adulthood and how we now choose how much to drink.

Whether you're sober or not, Figlia is a delicious option that you should absolutely check out! With far less investment-backing than her competitors, Lily has brought the brand to over 500 locations and has landed features in publications such as Vogue, Forbes, and CBS.

Figuring it Out with Keni Silva: Divorce as an Opportunity

Keni Silva joins TTFIO this week to talk all about divorce as an opportunity. After an international modeling career, Keni married her (now ex) husband at the age of 23 and they built a picture-perfect life together. But Keni realized she still wasn't happy despite checking off all the boxes that she had thought she wanted. In today's episode, Keni shares how she decided to change her life and get divorced after thirteen years of marriage. She talks about the ups and downs she went through with her mental health during that time and how she eventually got to the other side. Now she sees divorce as an opportunity and wants to share what she's learned with other women.

As a child of divorce, I love having conversations with women who have gone through it themselves; Keni explains how she's navigating the whole process with her two children and I loved hearing from her perspective. Enjoy!
