    About this Episode

Have you ever wondered why the person you want to have a relationship with isn’t ready, or doesn’t seem to be on the same page as you?  We want other people to be ready to make changes at the same time that we are ready.  But that is rarely the case, and we can’t make someone else ready for change.

We have to ask the hard question of, are we making someone else a priority over ourselves.  Because we have our own traumas, our own experiences, and our own things that we have to work through and we have to work through those and find joy for ourselves.  We can’t expect other people to fill that void and we can’t expect others to be seeking out the same things at the same time as us.

Finding joy should be a priority, and if someone or something is distracting from that, we have to examine why we are allowing that person or thing to distract us from the joy we deserve.

    Pursuing Your Dreams (Mental Note)

We are coming to you today to talk about pursuing your dreams. I have been talking to a variety of people over the last couple of weeks and have heard a common theme. They are in a career but do not feel like they are pursuing their passion. Have you ever felt that way? You deeply want to pursue a certain path but feel like you have invested so much time in something else?

I want to challenge you today to take a look at your life and be honest with yourself, what is truly your passion? What would you choose to do as a career if there were no barriers? In this episode, I share with you a simple practice that will help you take small steps to make your dream a reality.

Life's too short to work our entire lives and be unhappy. Even if you are just pursuing your passion as a hobby, you might be surprised how implementing just a little of what you love into your day can help your mental health and even slowly move you towards a career you are in love with.

Standing Up for Your Mental Health (Mental Note)

Standing Up for Your Mental Health (Mental Note)

Do you sometimes feel ashamed when talking about your own mental health? Do you worry what other people will think and does this fear keep you back sometimes from pursuing the support that you need?

Today I wanted to share how proud I am of Naomi Osaka for standing up for her own mental health. She is very much in the public eye but still took a stand (at her own expense) to talk about her own mental health journey.

I applaud her thousand times over. I hope this act of courage did not go over your head but you were able to see that it is okay to stand up for yourself. I also hope it encourages you to see mental health as a part of your overall health and that it is okay to talk to someone.

There are so many options available for therapy. If you need any kind of support or direction on where to find the right therapist for you please use the links below to connect with us- we are here to support you!

    Do It Scared (Mental Note)

    Do It Scared (Mental Note)

Have you ever wanted to pursue something but were unsure if it was the right time, or if you had what it took? How many times do we allow fear to keep us from going to the next level?

Today we are going to talk about doing it scared. I have been on a journey the past several months challenging myself to do things that scare me. I have been using the hashtag #TeamDoItScared on social media and decided to look and see if that name had been established online...it has not.

I knew this was an invitation for me to step into this space and create a community around those who are wanting to level up in their life and relationships by doing the things that they have been avoiding. Want to join us? Ready to go on a journey with others who will do it scared?

    Sickness While Single (Mental Note)

    Sickness While Single (Mental Note)

Being sick is never any fun, it’s miserable.  When you add onto being sick the fact of being single and not having anyone there to help take care of you it can be even harder to get through.  It’s important to realize that when we feel sick we will feel down mentally, and that’s a normal thing.

During those times it’s very important for us to reach out for help. Reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness and often it can be extremely important not just for our physical health, but our mental health as well.  In addition when we are sick we don’t know if things may take a turn for the worse, and if they do it is crucial we have someone available that we have reached out to who knows what we are going through.

Talking through or writing down your mental thoughts during this time can be especially beneficial as it helps us process through the loneliness and emotions that we go through during these times.

    Topics Discussed:

    • Reaching out for help.
    • Dealing with sickness on your own.
    • The emotions that come with being sick.

Traits of Highly Sensitive Person (Mental Note)

Traits of Highly Sensitive Person (Mental Note)

We are coming to you today to talk about a character trait called “Highly Sensitive Person” (or HSP). The word “sensitive” is not negative, it simply means someone who is highly attuned. It means that your emotions run deep.

The other part of HSP is that the person’s body (or nervous system) becomes a little more attuned as well-meaning you become sensitive to your surroundings, like fabrics or the light or temperature in a room.

I wanted to give this brief explanation because this personality is more prevalent than you may think, and is common within the black community. So if you feel misunderstood sometimes, or feel like there is something wrong with you, I wanted to take the time to assure you that you are not.

As a fellow HSP and a trained clinician trained specifically in Highly Sensitive People, I can help you navigate through the unique way you move through the world. I understand that it can feel like you are a square peg in a round hole- but the personality you have is okay. If you have questions or need additional support, please connect with me using the links below.

    Topics Discussed:

    • The characteristics of a Highly Sensitive Person
    • Why it is important to understand HSPs

Aligning Your Work with Who You Are with Ashley Asshire

How do you position yourself as an expert in your work? Imposter syndrome can catch hold of us and keep us second-guessing whether we have the knowledge and skills for the job we are in or are trying to get into.

In today’s episode, I sit down with Ashley Asshire who empowers women towards taking meaningful action in life and career.  She sits down and talks about how to leverage our imposter syndrome to our advantage. She explains that when we experience those self-doubts, they are actually red flags for us to take a step back and evaluate whether we are at the right place that aligns with our skillset.

She encourages us to evaluate our environment and not just go with the flow or do things the way we’ve always done them.  Ashley talks about how we need to breathe life into our work and what we are skilled at accomplishing.

Does Your Relationship Serve You? (Mental Note)

Does Your Relationship Serve You? (Mental Note)

Have you ever been in a relationship where you see warning signs but don’t act on them?  For instance maybe you see jealousy, anger, or disrespect.  Sometimes we can push those things off and tell ourselves that we can change them, or they were just having a bad day.  But we have to realize that when people show us those glimpses of who we are, we have to take them at face value and believe them.  No one has constant bad days, and we need to recognize that these are reoccurring tendencies and cut ties.

Often we will work really hard to put up with a lot of things in a relationship, especially early on because we want to make things work.  But decide to choose yourself first, and to get rid of relationships that do not serve you.  In the end you will be glad you did. When you first remove people from your life, it may hurt and it may be painful, but remember that by keeping them in your life you are doing yourself a disservice.  Ask yourself if the other person is giving you love, grace, and respect in return, and if they are not, then accept it and cut ties.

     --

    Topics Discussed:

    • When you discover who someone really is.
    • Can you change people?
    • How to act on bad behavior you see in those close to you.
    • Choosing yourself first.

    How to Recharge (Mental Note)

    How to Recharge (Mental Note)

We are still fighting against the pandemic, social injustices and the “new normal”, life can be extremely stressful right now.  So what do we do when we begin to get overwhelmed emotionally?  We have to take a step back and recharge ourselves.  There are several ways to do this.  From shutting down our electronics for a few hours or a day to refocus and bring our normalcy back.

Other ways we can recharge our batteries are taking power naps that are limited to twenty minutes or less.  Another great way to focus on resetting our minds is taking a staycation or going out for the day and doing something we enjoy.  This needs to be scheduled in and we need to place priority on it, otherwise we won’t do it.  You shouldn’t feel guilty for doing this, as it can sometimes be crucial for our mental well-being.
