First Time Founders with Ed Elson – A Founder’s Mission to Solve Hunger in America

    enApril 07, 2024

    Podcast Summary

    • Personal experiences and a sense of responsibilityIndividuals can be motivated by personal experiences and a desire to make a difference or give back, leading to personal and professional growth.

Both personal experiences and a desire to give back have significantly influenced the careers of the individuals discussed. Brene Brown, the podcast host, was motivated by a desire to make a difference and take care of her family. Scott, the entrepreneur, was driven by a desire to succeed financially in order to provide for his family and make a better life for himself, having grown up without much money. Dileep Rao, the founder of Sharebyte, was inspired by a life-threatening event to create a company that addresses a social issue – hunger – and gives back to the community. These stories illustrate how personal experiences and a sense of responsibility can serve as powerful motivators for personal and professional growth. Whether it's through creating a podcast, starting a business, or making a difference in the world, the individuals discussed have used their experiences to drive positive change.

    • Reflecting on the NYSE's role in American history and addressing food insecurityThe speaker, founder of Sharebyte, emphasizes the importance of private-public partnerships in tackling food insecurity in the US, drawing inspiration from practices in 40 countries where companies feed their workers.

The New York Stock Exchange plays a significant role in America's economic history and power. During a recent visit, the speaker reflected on the Exchange's foundational contributions to the country. He also shared his perspective on addressing food insecurity through a private-public partnership. The speaker, who is the founder of Sharebyte, an employee meal benefits platform, emphasized the importance of involving the private sector in solving public issues. He drew an analogy from practices in nearly 40 countries where companies feed their workers, and proposed engaging the public and private sectors to tackle food insecurity in the US. Sharebyte aims to align incentives for companies to undertake this responsibility. The speaker personally related to food insecurity, having experienced it despite working in prestigious finance firms during his career. He emphasized his mission to help take care of his parents, which led him to start Sharebyte.

    • Addressing Employee Satisfaction through Meal StipendsCompanies can combat employee disengagement and financial struggles by implementing meal stipends, an effective and easily tested solution using technology like SharePoint.

Even the most successful individuals have faced financial struggles early in their careers. This reality underscores the importance of addressing employee satisfaction and engagement, particularly in the form of meal stipends, for the average worker. Companies are recognizing the value of this benefit, which can be easily implemented and tested through technology like SharePoint, versus traditional methods like corporate credit cards for meal expenses. The crisis of employee disengagement, or "quiet quitting," can be addressed through such initiatives, making meal stipends an essential investment in workers. The speaker's personal story of immigrant roots and early financial hardships highlights the importance of this issue, as many successful individuals have experienced similar challenges.

    • Sharebyte: Empowering Corporations to Control Employee Meal BenefitsSharebyte is a tech platform that enables corporations to manage employee meal benefits, catering to various dietary needs and work environments, while also donating a meal to food rescue organizations for every transaction.

Sharebyte is a technology solution that offers corporations ultimate control over their employee meal benefits, providing flexibility for various dietary needs and work environments. The platform, which includes an API built over years, caters to both in-office and remote workers, offering a range of premium quick-service restaurants. Sharebyte also has a philanthropic side, donating a meal to a food rescue organization for every transaction made on the platform. With partnerships with Feeding America and City Harvest, Sharebyte has already donated over 9,000,000 meals and aims to continue making a difference in the fight against food insecurity, which currently affects over 44 million Americans, including over 13 million children.

    • Shame surrounding food insecurity hinders progressAddressing shame and stigma around food insecurity could lead to more effective solutions and greater progress in ending it.

The shame surrounding food insecurity, even among those who may not be considered the typical demographic, could be hindering efforts to address this issue as a top priority in both the private and public sectors. This shame can lead to people going hungry in silence, as was seen in the case of children in food-insecure communities who were reluctant to accept free school meals due to the stigma associated with being seen as needing them. By removing the stigma and making access to nutritious meals more normal, organizations were able to improve students' attentiveness and academic performance. Similarly, many adults and families are struggling with food insecurity, and addressing the shame and stigma surrounding this issue could lead to more effective solutions and greater progress in ending food insecurity.

    • Smart financial decisions lead to significant rewardsUtilize tools like Betterment, NerdWallet, and Grammarly to make informed financial decisions, communicate effectively, and ultimately, improve your quality of life.

Making smart financial decisions, no matter how small, can lead to significant rewards in the future. Betterment is an automated investing and savings app that can help you get started. NerdWallet offers expert advice on maximizing your earnings and spending, including comparing top travel credit cards for better rewards. And when it comes to communication, avoiding grammar and spelling mistakes with the help of Grammarly can prevent misinterpretations and save time and resources. For first-time founders, personal experiences and near-death situations can serve as catalysts for starting a business. The anniversaries of these events serve as reminders of the importance of taking action and following through on goals. By utilizing tools like Betterment, NerdWallet, and Grammarly, individuals can make informed financial decisions, communicate effectively, and ultimately, improve their overall quality of life.

    • Appreciating every moment after a near-death experienceUnexpected accidents remind us to cherish life and appreciate every moment, as we never know when it could be taken away.

Life can be unpredictable and fragile, and it's essential to appreciate every moment. The speaker shared a personal experience of being hit by a car, which left him with severe injuries and a near-death experience. Despite following safety rules and doing everything right, the accident happened unexpectedly. The speaker was saved by a kind stranger, who encouraged him to stay calm and not move, as his spine could have been injured. The incident left the speaker with feelings of panic, anger, and existential questions. However, he eventually came to the realization that gratitude is the greatest healer. The ability to walk, laugh, and think again was a precious gift, and he encouraged everyone to cherish every moment of their lives. The unexpected accident served as a reminder to appreciate the present and not take life for granted.

    • Maintaining a sense of purpose in entrepreneurshipExperiencing a near-death moment can inspire a sense of purpose, but maintaining it requires effort. Preserving and passing on what we have can help keep us focused on our goals during entrepreneurial challenges.

Experiencing a near-death moment can bring about a profound sense of purpose and meaning in life. However, maintaining this sense of purpose requires deliberate effort and diligence. Just as starting a business can begin with a clear mission and inspiration, the challenges and mundane tasks that come with it can make it easy to lose sight of that purpose. The idea of preserving and passing on what we have, whether it's a business or our time on earth, can help keep us grounded and focused on our goals. The journey to entrepreneurship may be messy and unpredictable, but maintaining a sense of purpose and meaning can help us navigate the challenges and make a lasting impact.

    • Embrace the journey to finding your purposeDespite challenges, finding purpose leads to success. Embrace risks, learn from falls, and inspire others with transparency.

Despite the odds against becoming a human being, once we have, we have the potential to find our purpose and overcome challenges. Finding our purpose can be difficult, but when we do, it can lead to great success. The journey to finding that purpose may involve falls and setbacks, but as long as we have the inspiration to keep getting back up, success is inevitable. The world is designed to give us what we want, and transparency about our struggles and experiences can inspire and help others. So, keep pushing forward, embrace the risks, and never give up on your dreams. Remember, every fall is an opportunity to learn and grow, and the second we find our purpose, something clicks.

How to Know if it’s Your Ego or Your Intuition Talking

How to Know if it’s Your Ego or Your Intuition Talking

How can you tell when it’s your head (ego) or your intuition (heart) that’s guiding you? Most of the time, we function from our head choosing situations that are the safest and protecting us even though our gut might tell us something different.

In order to know when it’s our intuition or ego, we have to first learn how to turn up the volume of our intuition. Sometimes our intuition talks through a feeling, sometimes through a flash of an image or idea, sometimes it’s just through a thought.

In today's episode, I’m going to share with you how you can start today by checking in with your intuition to answer any questions in life and how to be able to tell the difference. I’ll also give you guidance on how you can regularly clear out your own energy to keep you feeling grounded and clear.
