    Podcast Summary

    • Establishing a personal routine can reduce anxiety during uncertain timesDuring uncertain times, maintain a consistent sleep schedule, practice relaxation techniques, incorporate exercise, use telehealth services for weight loss, and leverage LinkedIn for hiring professionals.

During uncertain times, establishing a personal routine can help reduce anxiety and bring a sense of control. This can include going to bed and waking up at consistent times, practicing deep breathing and contemplation, and incorporating exercise into your day. Additionally, telehealth services like PlushCare can be a valuable resource for those struggling with weight loss, providing access to FDA-approved medications and doctors available day and night. Lastly, LinkedIn is a powerful tool for small business owners looking to hire professionals, offering access to a large pool of candidates who may not be actively searching for new roles. So, whether it's managing personal wellness or growing a business, remember that there are resources and tools available to help adapt to new circumstances. For more helpful tips on managing anxiety, be sure to check out the interview with psychotherapist and anxiety consultant, Mike Ward, in today's Friday 5.

    • Dress up and maintain routine for better well-being during self-isolationDressing up, acting normal, avoiding constant news, engaging in activities, and sticking to reliable news sources can improve mood and reduce anxiety during self-isolation.

Maintaining a normal routine and taking care of both physical and mental health can help improve mood and overall well-being during self-isolation. Dressing up and avoiding constant news consumption are simple yet effective ways to do this. The speaker emphasizes the importance of getting dressed and acting as if going to work, even if working from home. She also encourages engaging in activities like Pilates classes and avoiding excessive news consumption to reduce anxiety and stress. The speaker shares her own experience of a social media group called "dress up Friday" and encourages listeners to try it out. She advises sticking to reliable news sources and limiting news consumption to once a day. The speaker also reminds us that while COVID-19 can be scary, the vast majority of people who get the virus will recover.

    • Connecting and improving mental health during uncertain timesJoin virtual fitness classes for routine and social interaction, accept emotions and seek professional help if needed.

During these uncertain times, connecting with others and taking care of our physical and mental health is crucial. Many people, including families and clients of an anxiety clinic, are adjusting to the new normal of social distancing and working from home. This sudden change can lead to feelings of anxiety, as we are all creatures of habit and our routines have been disrupted in various ways. It's natural and okay to feel anxious, and acknowledging these emotions can help bring a sense of control back. A simple yet effective way to connect and improve mental health is by joining virtual fitness classes, like the Pilates workout hosted by Natalie Clough on Instagram every night at 6 o'clock. This not only helps in maintaining a routine but also provides an opportunity for social interaction, even if it's virtual. Additionally, it's essential to accept and name the emotions we're experiencing, rather than denying or avoiding them. Psychologist and anxiety expert Mike Ward emphasizes the importance of this acceptance and encourages seeking professional help if needed. Together, we can navigate through these challenging times by focusing on our health and connections.

    • Acknowledging and managing emotions during uncertain timesRecognize emotions, practice mindfulness, find control, remember we're not alone, take small actions to make a difference

During times of change and uncertainty, it's essential to acknowledge and accept the emotions we experience, from anxiety to grief. It's important to recognize when our minds are racing ahead with worst-case scenarios and remember that they're not necessarily true in the present moment. Our power and control lie in the present, not in our imaginings or future plans. Practicing mindfulness and understanding the difference between facts and imaginings can help us stay grounded and focused. Additionally, recognizing the emotions we're experiencing and finding practical ways to bring a sense of control back into our lives can help us navigate these challenging times. It's also important to remember that we're not alone in these feelings and that small actions, such as making a purchase from a company like Bombas that donates items to those in need, can make a significant impact.

    • Caring for physical and mental well-being during uncertain timesFocus on reliable news sources, limit intake, prioritize sleep, exercise, nutrition, social connections, and consider new hobbies for improved well-being

Taking care of both your physical and mental well-being is crucial during uncertain times. Boll and Branch's organic cotton sheets, which get softer with every wash, can contribute to a good night's sleep. To reduce anxiety, limit your news consumption and focus on facts from reliable sources. Exercise, nutrition, sleep, and hobbies are essential for your biology. Psychology can be improved by limiting news exposure and focusing on social connections, whether it's with family at home or online. Lastly, consider engaging in activities like Tai Chi or learning new hobbies to enhance your overall well-being. By focusing on these areas, you can create a sense of normality and reduce stress in your daily life.

    • Balancing Crisis and Happiness in Sociology, Biology, and PsychologyMaintain a healthy diet, reduce stress, prioritize self-care, and seek support during challenging times to bolster immune and nervous systems.

During times of crisis, it's essential to find balance and adapt to new situations while still allowing yourself to enjoy moments of happiness. This can be applied to various aspects of life, including sociology, biology, and psychology. A good diet rich in fresh foods, vitamins, and nutrients, such as vitamin C, is crucial for maintaining a strong immune system and overall well-being. Psychotherapist Mike Ward emphasized the importance of relaxation and reducing stress to help bolster the immune system and nervous system. In a recent podcast, Dr. Rebecca Lewis discussed hormonal help for anxiety in midlife women, providing valuable insights and resources for those dealing with anxiety and related health issues. Overall, it's crucial to prioritize self-care, adapt to change, and seek support during challenging times.

    • Emphasizing the importance of seeking help and accessing evidence-based informationMidlife women should engage with evidence-based resources, leave reviews to help spread the word, and seek support from experts for optimal health and wellbeing.

The speaker, Lizelle, emphasizes the importance of seeking help and accessing evidence-based information, particularly for midlife women. She encourages listeners to engage with her content, whether through her podcasts or Instagram live broadcasts, and to leave reviews to help spread the word. Additionally, she offers a discount on magazine subscriptions for those unable to shop in person during the current situation. Overall, Lizelle's message is one of support, encouragement, and accessibility, as she aims to provide valuable information and resources to her audience.

Bernice Tuffery is the founder of Sleep Haven New Zealand, author of self-help book and programme Sleep Easy, who dreamed of a better solution for compromised sleep.

Bad sleep sucks.  Sleep deficiency defies our biology and sabotages our days.  Yet more than a third of us struggle to get to sleep or sty asleep at night.

Sleep debt takes its toll on our mood, energy and productivity.  It affects our behaviour around food and exercise and erodes our immunity.

You're not alone, and there is a way through. Bernice Tuffery, fed up after years of compromised sleep, made it her mission to learn how to sleep well again.

She discovered a proven, natural way to fix her sleep. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for insomnia (CBTi) is recognised by sleep experts as the gold-standard treatment.

But with a lack of awareness and a server shortage of experts offering it, it's hard and expensive to access.

From her discussions with sleep professionals, extensive research and her lived experience of restoring her own sleep, Bernice shares her knowledge of self-taught CBTi with humour and heart.

Through her self-help book Sleep Easy, Bernice and her incredible team of coaches present a practical, six-week, step-by-step guide to help you take charge of your sleep, life and health.

    Stress and Sleep

    Stress and Sleep

This interview is full of information and a must listen to!

How does stress affect your sleep? How does sleep affect your stress levels? How can you improve your sleep? These are things we’re talking about in this episode.

I’m joined by Dr. Jen Parsons, a naturopath and experienced speaker in Toronto’s east end. Dr. Parsons regularly treats patients with anxiety, insomnia, skin conditions, hormonal conditions, and digestive issues. The majority of her patients are experiencing a transition in their life be it a divorce, new job, new school, or new diagnosis. She helps patient’s breakdown these changes into digestible pieces and supports them every step of the way.

She practices with the understanding that you are an expert in what you’re experiencing and she an expert in evidence-based integrative medicine.

Dr. Parsons received her doctorate from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine and during her clinical internship she served disadvantaged communities at Queen West Community Health Centre and practiced in a mobile medical clinic with Naturopaths Without Boarders in Cap Haitian, Haiti. Prior to her naturopathic studies, Dr. Parsons received her undergraduate degree from Mount Allison University.

She’s a committed lifelong learner. The field of integrative medicine is always evolving. In between clinic days, you’ll find her reading up on the latest clinical research, attending local and international conferences, and taking continuing education courses.

In her spare time, Dr. Parsons enjoys hanging with her son and husband, cooking healthy meals for her family, practicing yoga and traveling.

We talk about why the amount of sleep that we’re receiving has been progressively decreasing over the years, the signs of sleep deprivation, how lack of sleep contributes to our stress levels and so much more! This episode is a must listen to!!

Subtracting Self-Care | Moving Toward What Matters

Subtracting Self-Care | Moving Toward What Matters

Should self-care always mean you get to feel calm? Should self-care be limited to feeling good? Let’s reimagine self-care for a moment. Instead of adding things to your life in the name of self-care, consider what you could subtract in order to practice better self-care. Continually adding activities of self-care could become exhausting, and may make you feel worse. What could you let go of today to make room for your health and well-being?
