    • Multiple challenges need attention: saltwater intrusion, DNA data collection, oral hygiene, and asteroid explorationStay informed about saltwater intrusion harming agriculture, infrastructure, and drinking water; China collecting DNA data with potential misuse concerns; maintaining oral hygiene linked to brain health; NASA retrieving asteroid sample for scientific discovery

We're facing multiple challenges that require our attention and action. First, the Mississippi River is experiencing a potentially destructive saltwater intrusion due to two consecutive years of drought. This could harm agriculture, infrastructure, and drinking water supplies, and may even reach New Orleans. Second, China is collecting human DNA data from around the world to advance in new medicines and therapeutics, but concerns about potential misuse persist. Third, maintaining good oral hygiene could help protect not only your teeth and gums but also your brain, as recent research suggests a link between gum disease and dementia. Fourth, NASA is set to retrieve a sample of the Bennu asteroid, marking a first in asteroid exploration. While this asteroid has a minimal chance of hitting Earth, scientists are excited about the opportunity to study its pristine composition. These diverse issues underscore the importance of staying informed and engaged in the world around us.

    • Asteroid holds clues from solar system's formationAn asteroid with ancient molecules reveals insights into our solar system's history and the origin of life on Earth, emphasizing the significance of space exploration.

Scientists have discovered an asteroid containing molecules dating back to the formation of the solar system, approximately 4000000000 years ago. This asteroid, which is believed to hold clues about the origin of life on Earth, underscores the importance of space exploration in expanding our understanding of the universe and our place within it. This discovery not only provides valuable insights into the history of our solar system but also opens up new possibilities for scientific research. It's a reminder of the vast knowledge that lies beyond our planet and the potential discoveries that await us as we continue to explore the cosmos. The weekly podcast episode, produced by Taylor White, was written by Hannah Jewell and Jamie Ross, with editing by John Taylor, Christina Quinn, Frances Moody, and Melissa Ngo. Mixing and sound design were handled by Jim Briggs and Justin Garish, and the theme music was composed by Edith Mudge. Reneta Jablonski served as the director of audio. I'm Jeff Pierre, and I hope you enjoyed this week's episode. Have a great weekend, and I'll see you back here on Monday for more fascinating stories from the world of science and beyond.

In 2016, NASA launched a spacecraft to do something rarely attempted before: Collect space rocks from a potentially dangerous asteroid. The mission, named OSIRIS-REx, was successful. Tuesday, scientists opened a sealed canister containing the samples from the asteroid Bennu. Science correspondent Nell Greenfieledboyce talks to host Regina G. Barber about the mission's close calls and what NASA might learn from these space rocks that are older than our planet.

SCIENCE HINDSIGHT 2020: The Voyager Missions

SCIENCE HINDSIGHT 2020: The Voyager Missions

Welcome to another Science Hindsight 2020 episode. The Voyager 2 spacecraft has been in the news recently, which made me want to revisit the origins of this historic mission. Voyager 1 and 2 launched in 1977 and have helped to give us a better understanding of our solar system, visiting Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Before leaving the solar system entirely, Voyager 1 looked back and snapped the famous 'family portrait' with the iconic Pale Blue Dot photo. For the 30th anniversary of the Pale Blue Dot, the photo has been remastered, and this episode follows the journey of these incredible spacecraft as they continue to transmit data almost 12 billion miles away.
