    About this Episode

    Dr. Andalib is a gastroenterologist who specializes in advanced endoscopy. He attended Ross University School of Medicine, followed by three years of internal medicine residency at Georgetown University Hospital. After residency, he trained as a GI fellow at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, and later as an interventional gastroenterology fellow at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

    Currently, Dr. Andalib is the Director of Endoscopic Surgery at Mount Sinai South Nassua’s Center for Interventional Endoscopy. He is also an assistant professor in the Division of Gastroenterology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. On a daily basis, he performs diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy and other endoscopic procedures. In his free time, he enjoys mentoring students and enjoying New York City.

    Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation with Dr. Cara Thomas

    Dr. Thomas is a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician who specializes in spinal cord injury. She took a non-traditional path to medical school by first majoring in mathematics and political philosophy as an undergraduate at Brown University, after which she earned her Master’s in Public Health at Columbia University. When Dr. Thomas decided to pursue medicine, she completed a post-bac program and attended Stony Brook for medical school. Since then, she has trained at Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital in Chicago and later at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Florida.

    Currently, Dr. Thomas works as a physiatrist in the inpatient setting, helping patients with a variety of injuries with a focus on spinal cord injuries. Her patients are recovering from trauma such as gun-shot wounds or health conditions like strokes.

    Radiation Oncology with Dr. Q Ho

    Dr. Ho is a fourth-year radiation oncology resident at the University of Arizona. He attended University of California – Davis as an undergraduate and later earned his medical degree from the UC Davis School of Medicine. During his third year of medical school, Dr. Ho decided he would pursue a career in radiation oncology and was able to gain experience and dedicate himself to research in the field.

    Now as a resident, Dr. Ho helps treat patients with cancer using radiation therapy. During his presentation, he explains how these treatments are planned and performed. He also discusses a few interesting cases that demonstrate the utility of radiation oncology in the targeting of various cancers.

    Otolaryngology with Dr. Hillary McCrary

    Otolaryngology with Dr. Hillary McCrary

    Dr. Hillary McCrary is an otolaryngology resident in Salt Lake City at the University of Utah. She received her undergraduate degree, Master’s in Public Health, and medical degree at the University of Arizona. As a medical student, she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha and Gold Humanism Honor Society. After she completes her training in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, Dr. McCrary plans to further specialize in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology and Microvascular Surgery. 

    As an otolaryngologist, Dr. McCrary deals with disease and pathology that affects everything “above the clavicles”. She describes the specialty as a perfect mix of surgery and clinic. After discussing her typical workday and subspecialties that otolaryngologists can pursue, she presents three interesting cases. In the first case, she describes a slide tracheoplasty – a procedure that widens the trachea. The second case involves an incredible surgical procedure that uses skin and vasculature from the forehead to conceal a large piece of skin removed from a patient’s face. Finally, Dr. McCrary discusses a neck mass in a 53-year-old female patient.

    Neurology with Dr. Alexis Dallara-Marsh

    Neurology with Dr. Alexis Dallara-Marsh

    Dr. Dallara-Marsh is a neurologist who specializes in working with children. She attended an accelerated BS/MD program, completing undergraduate studies at Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education and then a medical degree at SUNY Health Science Center in Brooklyn. After those 7 years, she trained in pediatrics at Westchester Medical Center. To further her expertise within the field, Dr. Dallara-Marsh completed fellowships in Neurology with Special Qualification in Child Neurology and Epilepsy at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia.

    Some of Dr. Dallara-Marsh’s interests include child neurology, epilepsy, and palliative care. She currently works in a private-practice setting in New Jersey. When she is not at work, Dr. Dallara-Marsh enjoys mentoring pre-meds and also spending time with her young children.

    Urology with Dr. Ed Chang

    Urology with Dr. Ed Chang

    Dr. Ed Chang is currently training as a urology resident at the University of Washington. He earned his undergraduate degree from UCLA, majoring in Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology. Later, Dr. Chang attended the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA for his medical degree.

    Outside of urology, Dr. Chang is one of the co-founders of Prospective Doctor, and has been heavily involved in helping students interested in medical school as an advisor at MedSchoolCoach.

    Pathology with Dr. Vanessa Smith

    Pathology with Dr. Vanessa Smith

    Dr. Vanessa Smith is a practicing neuropathologist. She received her MD from the Mayo Clinic. Following completion of her internship at the Mayo Clinic, she returned to her hometown of Lexington and completed an Anatomic Pathology residency, followed by a Neuropathology fellowship at the University of Kentucky. Academically, she has presented her research at several national and international meetings and has been published in multiple peer-reviewed journals. She also directed and taught several didactic curricula for pathology, neurosurgery and neurology residents, receiving a departmental teaching award for her efforts in resident education.

    Dr. Ruby is a retired vascular surgeon with an extensive background in the field. He attended Brandeis University as an undergraduate, followed by Columbia University for his medical degree. Afterwards, Dr. Ruby trained in general surgery at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and Vascular Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School.

    General Surgery with Dr. Emily Singer

    Dr. Singer is a fourth year General Surgery resident at The Ohio State University. Using surgical procedures, she treats all different types of conditions, ranging from appendicitis to severe trauma. During her surgical rotations she fell in love with the operating room and never looked back.

    Her day to day life as a general surgery resident includes in-patient rounding, performing different types of operations, and participating in skills/simulation training. In addition, she spends 1 day a week in a clinic setting, seeing new and postoperative patients. One of Dr. Singer’s favorite parts about general surgery is the range of different disease processes she sees: acute, chronic, benign, and malignant.

    Ophthalmology with Dr. James Kelly

    Ophthalmology with Dr. James Kelly

    In his daily life as an ophthalmologist, Dr. Kelly treats a large number of eye pathologies including glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. In this session, Dr. Kelly discusses other eye disorders including cataracts and strabismus, and explains several treatments including medications, lasers, and surgery. He mentions that a large number of ophthalmologists further specialize to allow them to take care of the intricacies related to the eye as best as possible. While Dr. Kelly mainly works in the clinic, some ophthalmologists spend much of their time performing surgeries in the operating room such as cataracts, LASIK, and retinal surgery.

    Med-Peds with Dr. Sundar Natrajan
    After receiving his undergraduate education at UC Davis, Dr. Natarajan attended medical school at New York Medical College where he served on the admissions committee. He completed residency in internal medicine/pediatrics and has gone on to have an extensive career taking care of both pediatric patients and adults.

    As the oldest of 6 children, Dr. Natarajan truly enjoys mentoring and helping others grow. He has interviewed hundreds of applicants to medical school in the past, and currently serves as a Physician Advisor at MedSchoolCoach, guiding pre-med students one-on-one.
