    Podcast Summary

    • Reporting child molestation is crucial for safetyParents must prioritize children's safety and report molestation, even if the child doesn't want to. Over 200 instances can occur before a perpetrator is caught.

Parents have a responsibility to report child molestation, even if their child does not want them to. This was discussed on The Doctor John DeLoney Show, where John emphasized that it's important to prioritize the safety and wellbeing of children, as over 200 instances of molestation occur before the perpetrator is caught. John also mentioned the possibility of creating a confession show where callers can anonymously share their past wrongdoings or experiences, providing a platform for healing and speaking out loud. The show also touched on the importance of communication and speaking out in relationships, as well as the idea that people often carry heavy weights and believe they're the only ones going through something. The show encourages listeners to call in or visit johndaloney.com/ask to share their confessions and be a part of the conversation.

    • Understanding Teenagers' Sleep NeedsTeenagers need more sleep than usual, it's natural, plan summer schedules to prioritize rest for optimal brain development and well-being.

The teenage brain is genetically hardwired to need more sleep than what is typically provided in the early school schedules. The speaker emphasized that teenagers' brains are not being lazy but rather following their natural sleep patterns. The speaker suggested that families have a meeting to plan the summer and establish a reasonable curfew and TV schedule to ensure their teenagers get the necessary sleep. The speaker also shared his personal experience and beliefs about the importance of hard work and productivity during summer, but acknowledged the scientific evidence that challenges his views. He concluded that it's essential to create a world around the teenagers' natural sleep patterns and prioritize their rest for optimal brain development and well-being.

    • Balancing Expectations and Priorities for TeenagersEncourage teenagers to contribute to household chores, earn income, and prioritize sleep. Parents should lead by example and make sleep a non-negotiable priority. Setting a schedule and allowing choices can help teenagers develop responsibility and time management skills.

Creating a balanced lifestyle for teenagers involves setting clear expectations and prioritizing sleep, while also encouraging them to contribute to the household and earn their own income through part-time jobs. Parents must lead by example and prioritize sleep themselves, making it a non-negotiable priority. This approach can help break the cycle of overworking and neglecting essential needs, promoting a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle for both teenagers and parents. Additionally, setting a schedule and allowing teenagers to make choices about chores and screen time can help them develop responsibility and time management skills. Overall, the goal is to create a home environment that fosters productivity, balance, and healthy habits.

    • Creating Meaningful Summer Experiences for TeensFamilies should prioritize developmentally appropriate activities, hold each other accountable, and plan ahead to create a positive summer experience for their teens, especially during times of significant life changes.

Families need to be intentional and accountable in creating meaningful summer experiences for their children, as the lack of structure and routine can contribute to anxiety and depression among teenagers. This is especially important during times of significant life changes, such as moving or job changes, which can add to the stress and anxiety. Additionally, families should prioritize developmentally appropriate activities for their children, such as sleep, physical activity, and working towards goals. It's essential for parents to hold each other accountable and plan ahead to create a positive and productive summer experience for their family. Furthermore, for those navigating the home buying process, focusing on what you can control, such as choosing trustworthy professionals to help you, can help alleviate some of the stress and anxiety that comes with such a significant purchase.

    • Normal to feel emotional reactions as a therapist to traumatic eventsAcknowledging and honoring emotional reactions to traumatic events can make us more effective therapists, building stronger connections with clients and providing them with necessary support.

Experiencing strong emotional reactions to traumatic events, even as a counselor or therapist, is a normal and human response. John shared his personal story of discovering the death of a young child while working in crisis work, which deeply affected him and caused him to leave the scene. He emphasized that it's essential to acknowledge and honor these emotions, as they can make us more empathetic and effective in our roles as therapists. By being open about our own vulnerabilities and acknowledging the impact of traumatic events, we can build stronger connections with our clients and provide them with the support they need. Additionally, having a support system of colleagues and mentors is crucial for processing these emotions and continuing to grow as professionals.

    • Addressing emotions as a mental health professionalMental health professionals should prioritize their emotional well-being and seek support to effectively help clients, enhancing the therapeutic relationship.

It's essential for mental health professionals to address their emotions and seek support to effectively help their clients. The speaker shares her personal experience of growing up in a situation where expressing emotions was not encouraged, leading her to feel the need to be strong and know it all as a therapist. However, she acknowledges the importance of acknowledging and processing her own emotions to provide genuine empathy and understanding to her clients. The speaker emphasizes the need for mental health professionals to prioritize their emotional well-being and encourages open communication and seeking support from colleagues or therapists. This not only benefits the therapist but also enhances the therapeutic relationship with clients. The speaker's story underscores the importance of recognizing and addressing emotions in both personal and professional contexts.

    • Processing emotions after traumaConnect with others, share your story, write down feelings, seek support, and return to the place of the event to begin healing.

It's crucial to acknowledge and process emotions after experiencing a traumatic event, such as a mass shooting. This can be done by connecting with others, sharing your story, and writing down your feelings in a journal. It's essential to reach out to trusted individuals for support and understanding, even if it's just one person. Additionally, while it's important to remember that statistically, the likelihood of another traumatic event occurring is low, it's still essential to hold that tension and return to the place where the event took place to begin the healing process. This may involve visiting home, hugging loved ones, and re-establishing a sense of normalcy in daily life. Ultimately, allowing yourself to feel and process emotions is an essential part of moving forward after a traumatic event.

    • Processing emotions during griefAcknowledge emotions, connect with loved ones, take care of self, honor anger, write thoughts, seek support, engage in self-care.

During times of grief, it's essential to acknowledge and process emotions, connect with loved ones, and take care of one's physical and emotional well-being. These actions are part of the natural grieving process, which includes seasons of sadness, strength, and making meaning. Anger, a powerful emotion, can be honored and expressed, but it's crucial not to let it become trapped and explosive. Writing down thoughts and feelings, seeking support from others, and engaging in self-care activities can help in the healing process. Remember, it's okay to be sad and to let others see that vulnerability. This process is not about being weak but about allowing oneself to feel and grow from the experience.

    • Acknowledging difficult emotions leads to better skills and relationshipsRecognizing internal feelings, seeking help, and honoring memories can improve personal relationships and therapeutic skills.

Acknowledging and addressing difficult emotions, even in private life, can lead to better therapeutic skills and improved relationships. It's important to remember that everyone experiences challenges, and while external circumstances may suggest happiness, internal feelings might not align. Naming and acknowledging people's names, especially those who have passed away, is crucial in honoring their memories. During tough times, seeking help from a trusted friend, mentor, or therapist can be beneficial in recharging one's emotional battery. In the case of complex family dilemmas, balancing the needs of all involved parties can be challenging. Honesty and communication with law enforcement while respecting a child's wishes require careful consideration and a commitment to finding a solution that prioritizes everyone's safety and well-being.

    • Protecting a child's safety and wellbeingReport child molestation to authorities, prioritize child's safety, reassure them, avoid taking law into own hands, support healing process

When it comes to reporting child molestation, it's crucial to prioritize the child's safety and wellbeing above all else. This means reporting the incident to the authorities and seeking justice in a legal manner, even if it feels difficult or traumatizing for the child in the moment. It's important to remember that the child has already had their autonomy and safety violated, and taking away their control over the situation by forcing them to make decisions they're not ready for can be retraumatizing. Instead, reassure them that you will handle the situation and seek justice on their behalf. Additionally, if someone is considering taking the law into their own hands or retaliating against the perpetrator, it's essential to recognize that this can cause more harm than good and potentially put the child in further danger. The greatest gift you can give a child in this situation is to believe them and support them through the healing process.

    • Communicating with a child about a sensitive situationPrioritize open communication and trust, involve child in process, call family meeting, handle situation with care and compassion, professionals are there to help

When dealing with a sensitive situation involving a child's safety, it's crucial to prioritize open communication and trust within the family. The speaker emphasizes that it's natural to feel overwhelmed and unsure when faced with such a situation, but it's essential to remember that everyone involved - the parents and the child - are victims of the situation. It's important to involve the child in the process as much as possible while ensuring their safety and wellbeing. A family meeting should be called to explain the situation and the necessary actions, emphasizing love and support for the child. The longer the truth is withheld, the more explosive the situation may become. It's also important to remember that professionals involved in the situation, such as law enforcement or counselors, are there to help and not to deceive. The speaker suggests that the child's sense of trust and security is already fragile, so it's essential to handle the situation with care and compassion. Ultimately, the goal is to prioritize the child's emotional wellbeing and ensure they feel safe and supported throughout the process.

    • Communicating openly with children during difficult situationsParents should communicate honestly and directly with children during challenging situations, reassuring them of love and support, while acknowledging their emotions without letting reactions negatively impact them.

Parents should prioritize communicating openly and honestly with their children during difficult situations, especially when involving law enforcement or counseling. The daughter in this situation had been carrying the burden of fearing her father's reaction and feeling out of control. It's essential for parents to remind their child that they are not in trouble and that the adults in their lives are handling the situation. Additionally, parents must acknowledge their emotions but ensure they do not let their reactions negatively impact their children. The conversation should be direct, clear, and reassuring, emphasizing that the child is loved and that the situation is not their fault. Parents should also avoid keeping secrets from their children, as they may misunderstand the situation and feel guilty. Overall, maintaining open communication and providing emotional support can help children navigate challenging situations and develop healthy emotional regulation skills.

    • Finding comfort in each other during tough timesDespite life's challenges, prioritize love and support for children, as it can make all the difference in their lives.

No matter what challenges life throws at us, it's essential to make time for our children and let them know we're there for them. The father in this story had a tough day, but he took the opportunity to connect with his daughter and express his love for her. He acknowledged the difficulties they were facing together and assured her that they would get through it. This simple act of love and reassurance meant the world to her, and they were able to find comfort and peace in each other's presence. It's important to remember that there's a time for accountability and frustration, but there's also a time for love and support. As parents, we play a crucial role in helping our children navigate the ups and downs of life, and they need to know that we're in their corner. Whether it's through a heartfelt conversation or a comforting hug, our presence and love can make all the difference in their lives.

    • Prioritizing One's Needs Over RelationshipNeglecting partner's needs can lead to feelings of resentment and damage the relationship. Prioritize open communication and mutual respect to ensure its longevity and happiness.

Relationships can be challenging when one person prioritizes their needs over the other's. In this case, the speaker, Casey, has shared that they have been deeply hurt by someone they care about, who has left them twice and consistently puts their children before them. This behavior suggests a lack of consideration for Casey's needs and feelings, which can be damaging to the relationship. It's important to communicate openly and make an effort to meet each other's needs in a healthy and balanced way. If one person consistently puts their own needs ahead of the other, it can lead to feelings of neglect and resentment. Ultimately, it's essential to prioritize open communication and mutual respect in any relationship to ensure its longevity and happiness.

Special: Unlocking the 8th Sense: Interoception and the Power of Regulation in Play Therapy

Special: Unlocking the 8th Sense: Interoception and the Power of Regulation in Play Therapy

Original Air Date: April 13, 2021

How do we know when we are grumpy, tired, overheated, or overwhelmed? ... Lisa talks about this 8th sense called Interoception or the "How do we know" sense, which is absolutely critical to enhancing a child's regulatory capacity ...

Why? Because what we see in the playroom is actually not behavioral issues, but really the child's inability to stay connected and regulate through the activation of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). But what does this have to do with Interoception? ...

Regulation and attunement starts with our interoceptive capacity. We can teach children tons of regulation strategies, but if they cannot register the clues that let them know they need to regulate in the first place, what we've done is just handed them tools that they have no clue how or when to use.

And as therapists we need to have this capacity enhanced in us!

Lisa shares ideas for starting to develop the interoceptive capacity in ourselves as therapists and our child clients, in this really important discussion that tells us that our body might actually be the most important toy in the playroom.
