Today, we discuss, Connect with Your Team, and Peer Coaching Made Simple co-authored with Dr. Denny Coates, her business partner of 30 years.  

    The combination of both of these books used in a “learning capacity” may be one of the most important things a company owner can do to start creating a long-term positive culture and long-term efficiency in their business.  

    It’s been proven that you can learn how to improve your communication skills; and in their books, Meredith and Denny share a great number of strategies. However, as Meredith will tell you, you need a support system and an ongoing discipline to master many of the skills needed to interact with others more effectively and efficiently. 

    During the podcast we covered why communication skills are hard skills, not soft skills, what’s required to master a skill, and how a company can provide coaching for everyone without breaking the bank. We discussed the characteristics of great listeners and how to encourage someone to perform at the highest level.     Over the years, I have heard the expression, “business owner knows their business better than anyone”.  That might be true in some respects, however, when it comes to knowing the accurate value of their company, statistics would disagree.   

     

    In many cases, owners use “a rule of thumb”,  valuation method, advocated by industries, associations, or organizations.  “Rules of thumb”,  are not necessarily accurate as each business has its own set of metrics, method of management,  statistics, and other value drivers that come into play when a company is appraised. 

     

    Statistically,  90% of the buy and sell agreements have flaws, along with a flawed valuation, causing business owners to sell their businesses for less than the maximum potential  business value.
