Ever been caught off-guard by an emergency with nothing but a stale granola bar to get you through? Bill Bateman here, and I'm about to change that for you. I recently faced the great water pouch leak debacle in my cars emergency kit, and it made me realize just how vital it is to keep those survival supplies in check. Tune in as I walk you through the dos and don'ts of seasonal car emergency kit management, ensuring your food, water, and batteries are in top-notch condition. Strap in as we shift gears to the homefront where the rotation and reevaluation of your emergency stash can mean the difference between calm and chaos. You'll learn why your freezer food might need a refresh, which batteries can be life savers, and how a solar generator could be your new best friend. And with summer on the horizon, it's not just about beating the heat but being prepared for it—with well-organized, accessible supplies. Don't forget, our community classes at Retired Guy Productions are in full swing, offering a mix of safety skills and good old-fashioned camaraderie. How to Address Wound Care Effectively

How to Address Wound Care Effectively

Imagine being equipped with the know-how to handle the aftermath of a bleeding injury—whether it's a minor scrape or a deep cut. That's exactly what you'll grasp in this episode as Bill Bateman walks you through the essential steps of first aid and wound care. Bill shares his expertise on the ABCs of emergency response, emphasizing the importance of airway, breathing, and circulation, and guides us on how to tackle bleeding with confidence. Moreover, he highlights the life-saving Stop the Bleed program by the Ashland Fire Department, reminding us that cleaning wounds and seeking medical help is paramount. Bill's advice doesn't stop there; he knows that teaching others and being self-sufficient is vital in a crisis, and he discusses the need for two types of first aid kits—outlining what essentials your "boo-boo kit" should contain.

In our second segment, we get into the nitty-gritty of what makes a first aid kit effective, from the practicality of vet wrap to the psychological comfort provided by fun bandages for all ages. Bill's insights into the items your kit should never be without, like gauze pads of various sizes and saline solution, are invaluable. He also navigates us through the importance of professional medical training and consulting healthcare experts for emergencies. By the end of this discussion, you'll not only be motivated to ensure your kit is up to scratch, but you'll also understand why looking at product ratings is crucial for emergency readiness—not just for minor issues. This episode is teeming with actionable advice that could make a critical difference when care is needed most.

Finally Thawed out and Back on my feet again!

Last time we talked about a car tire, flat and frozen to the street in two inches of ice. That set off an interesting series of events and ideas. This week we will discuss Donut Spare tires, "Spare Tire in a Can", and NO spare tires. Plus portable air pumps, and battery jump starters.

I'll also give you some suggestions on Wound Care as a preview to next week's more in-depth segment.  I'm also giving my Podiatrist a shout-out for some excellent work and getting me back on my feet-literally.

We will finish off the episode with some good news, some questionable business decisions I've observed, and class reminders for this month.

Weather Armagedon? Let's check the reserves!

It was a cold mess out there this past week and we went to the reserves to see what information we had to share. In checking, I found three prior podcasts about dealing with cold weather, emergency heat, and emergency power. We wanted to share those with you to keep you prepared.

I also discussed some of the unexpected problems that come up when the Internet goes down in an Internet-based society. All that plus some classes that will be happening in the second half of the month that you may find interesting!

    Thoughts from a Swamp Boat

    Thoughts from a Swamp Boat

Merry Christmas, or Happy Holidays if you prefer, to everyone out there from all of us.

My wife and I just got back from a trip to New Orleans. We did all the Touristy things- We took the double-decker bus tour and had a memorable seafood lunch at Dragos in the Hilton. Not only was the lunch great but included some of the BEST gumbo we've ever had.

Along with that was the worst excuse for a Po Bo I have eaten at the French market. Gak! We watched a TV show filming on Bourbon Street while having a libation, from the back of a pedicab. Exceptional driver and guide. We had some alligator on a stick. I even managed to decorate my dark slacks with the powered sugar from a plate full of Benigets.

Well good for us.  What's the point? Well despite it being in the low 50’s temperature-wise and too cold for gators, and the water lower than normal, we still had a series of great adventures thanks to some great people.

When it is said and done, it is all about the people.  Time for a look back at  some of the lessons from last year and some thoughts on getting into  2024

(And by the way: That lake I was trying to pronounce is: Cataouatche. The Swamp Tour  is Ragin' Cajun and located in Luling, LA.)
