Welcome back to College Charge in 2023!

This week, Dan is joined by Chip Timmons, the Dean for Enrollment Management at Wabash College. Wabash offers unique educational opportunities as a small liberal arts college. It is such an exciting time in the college process! Students are beginning to hear back from many of the schools that they've applied to as early action and early decision schools, and it is so gratifying to be able to celebrate with these students as they receive good news! In this episode, Dan Burkett takes a moment to thank all of the wonderful college admissions professionals who joined College Charge throughout this semester, but also acknowledges the many parties invested in seniors' college process. In this season of celebration, it is important to give thanks to the members of your community that have supported you throughout the process.

Fittingly, Jacqueline Bauer of DePauw University in Greencastle, IN joins Dan to discuss the exciting opportunities available to undergraduate students at DePauw. Depauw University is known for delivering a comprehensive liberal arts and sciences foundation to nurture students with diverse interests and talents.

In the conclusion of the special Affording College Week series, Director of College Counseling at Shorecrest Preparatory School Myra Simpson joins Dan Burkett to discuss an important aspect of financing a college education: scholarships! Ms. Simpson gives valuable insight into the various sources of scholarships available, outlines the process for competitive scholarships, and gives perspective on what it takes to be awarded coveted scholarship money. In today's special Affording College Week episode, Senior Associate Director of College Counseling at Shorecrest Preparatory School, John Fanning, joins Dan Burkett to discuss an important tool students can use in estimating the actual cost of attending a college or university: the Net Price Calculator. Required by federal law, each college or university will have a net price calculator that enables students to input some basic financial information to be able to estimate their actual cost of attendance. On this week's College Charge, host Dan Burkett is joined by Associate Director of College Counseling at Shorecrest Preparatory School, Meghan Schneider. Mrs. Schneider is here to kick off Shorecrest's Affording College Week by giving an overview of the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program, which incentivizes academic performance in high school by rewarding Florida high school graduates for high academic achievement. In this episode, Mrs. Schneider covers the primary benefits of the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship, the criteria that must be met to qualify, and even some changes that are on the horizon. ED vs. EA vs. RD - you are sure to hear these acronyms frequently as you progress through your college process. In this episode, Anna Lee Buehn joins Dan Burkett to discuss what these mean in regards to the application process. Applying to a college early decision, early action, or regular decision could impact how your application is read, what information will be available to the colleges and universities to which you apply, and will certainly impact your own decision process. Additionally, because students are so overtly stressed about test optional admissions, we dive into what an application reader considers when test scores are not listed.

Jacqueline Bauer joins Dan for this week’s College Charge to discuss how to get the most out of a college fair. Jacqueline Bauer serves as the Director of Southeast Recruitment and Alumni Recruitment Team for Depauw University in Greencastle, IN. A seasoned college admissions professional, Jacqueline has attended more than her fair share of college fairs, and has just about seen it all, so she is full of great tips on how to approach college fairs and provides insight into the mindset of the admissions representatives present at college fairs. While the focus of this discussion is on etiquette for college fairs, these tips are also fully applicable to meeting with campus representatives during on-campus interviews. In addition to giving helpful tips on what to do, she also gives helpful advice on some things to avoid when interacting with representatives at college fairs. 

In this episode’s campus spotlight, Alexis Mackbach of the University of Connecticut sits down with the College Charge to talk about life as an alumna of the University of Connecticut! Alexis talks all about the college experience on a rural campus with cows on campus in Storrs, Connecticut. Find out all about the exciting activity at UConn in this week’s campus spotlight. 

In this episode of College Charge, host Dan Burkett is joined by Lauren Holmes, an admissions representative from Queens University of Charlotte to discuss the holistic review of college applications. Lauren shares insight on what it really means when colleges state they review applications holistically, while also shedding light on effective personal statements, letters of recommendation from teachers, and shaping a college campus's culture through the admissions process.
