Today, Liz Durfee, a mental health professional who specializes in military and first responder mental health, joins us to discuss how we can take back control from those inner negative thoughts.

    Liz is an Army veteran with over five years of active-duty experience as an officer having served with the 101st Airborne at Fort Campbell, KY and the 11th Signal Brigade at Fort Bliss, TX. After her active-duty service, Liz earned her Master of Science in Social Work from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with a concentration in evidence-based interpersonal practice.

    She not only has experience working with law enforcement and military families, but she also comes from a first responder and military family. Liz truly has a heart for supporting those who are called to these fields.

    In today's episode, we talk with retired firefighter Christy Warren. Christy shares her story and her journey with PTSD. From the struggles with the calls to her healing process at the West Coast Post-Trauma Retreat, Christy's story is one filled with hope and purpose.


     

    Due to the nature of this topic, please note that some parts may trigger intense reactions from folks who currently struggle with PTSD or thoughts of self-harm.


     

    Christy Warren is a retired Fire Captain from the Berkeley Fire Department. She has twenty-five years of service as a professional paramedic, with seventeen years as a professional firefighter. She was diagnosed with PTSD in 2014 and spent several years recovering. Since retiring from the fire service, she has completed a triathlon, the Escape From Alcatraz swim, and a bachelor’s degree in business from Washington State University. She is a volunteer at the West Coast Post Trauma Retreat. She lives in Pleasant Hill, California with her wife Lisa and her dog Harriet.
