    Podcast Summary

    • Professional wrestling surprisesTheft of MJF's ring, Khan's secrecy, Owens' uncertainty, and unexpected title contenders showcase the unpredictability and constant evolution of professional wrestling.

Key takeaway from this episode of Huge Pop is that the world of professional wrestling is full of surprises and intrigue. The top news stories this week include the theft of MJF's signature diamond ring during All-In weekend, Tony Khan's refusal to release attendance figures for the event, and Kevin Owens expressing uncertainty about his future in WWE. Fans were excited about the matches at Bastion Berlin and the progression of the Judgment Day faction. However, some felt disappointed by the unexpected contenders for championship titles in AEW. Overall, the episode highlighted the unpredictability and constant evolution of the wrestling world. Tune in to Huge Pop for more news, interviews, and analysis.

    • WWE championship handlingInconsistent handling of championships and storylines in WWE can devalue the importance of the belts and disappoint fans. However, strong storylines and entertaining television can still keep viewers engaged.

The inconsistent handling of championships and storylines in WWE, as discussed during the podcast, can devalue the importance of the belts being worn. Fans were disappointed with the go-home shows for SmackDown and RAW leading up to the PLE, feeling that they didn't make sense or build excitement for the event. However, they appreciated the psychological investment in the Cody Rhodes vs. Kevin Owens storyline and the entertaining television overall. Rikishi's comments in the wrestling media were seen as harmless and possibly even part of an angle, but the quality of pro wrestling journalism was criticized for its negative focus on him. AOP's finish was criticized for looking weak, and Paul Ellering's mic time was felt to be underutilized. The standout moments were Brian Dangelson's AEW title win and Randy Orton and Gunther's match at Bastion Berlin.

    • AEW head booker, perception in wrestlingA dedicated head booker could help AEW tell more cohesive stories and make the promotion more competitive, while perception plays a significant role in determining a wrestler's success, and effective storytelling and crowd engagement are crucial in professional wrestling.

During the discussion on AEW, it was acknowledged that having a dedicated head booker could help tell more cohesive stories and make the wrestling promotion more competitive with WWE. The lack of a head booker was identified as a missed opportunity and a critique against Tony Khan, who is currently in charge of booking matches. Additionally, it was mentioned that perception plays a significant role in determining a wrestler's success as a main event star, and Apollo Crews, despite having all the tools, is not currently perceived as one due to past presentations. The European crowd at WWE's PLE in Berlin was praised for their passion and energy, which can make or break a match. Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens were highlighted for their ability to work a hot crowd and milk it for all it's worth. The injury to Cody's knee was used to make the champion look vulnerable and add intrigue to the story, but it remains to be seen how this will affect Kevin Owens' character development. Overall, the importance of effective storytelling and crowd engagement in professional wrestling was emphasized.

    • Professional wrestling eventThe event featured strong wrestling matches but had some confusing rule implementations and unexpected title changes, with varying audience reactions to certain teams.

The professional wrestling event showcased strong matches, but some elements, like the implementation of certain rules or character development, could have been executed more effectively. For instance, the strap match between CM Punk and Drew McIntyre was entertaining with the old school rules, but the addition of red and green lamps for heel and face, respectively, was confusing and not necessary. As for the tag team title match between Fire and Dawn and Jade Cargill and Bianca Belair, the title change was surprising, and the team of Fire and Dawn didn't seem to be resonating with the audience, leading to speculation about their future in the division. Jade Cargill, despite criticism from some fans, has shown growth and improvement since joining WWE, and her match against Belair showcased their impressive athleticism and power. Overall, the event had its highs and lows, but the wrestling itself was generally strong and engaging.

    • Wrestling influencesBret Hart's signature move struggles highlight his influence, unexpected losses lead to potential future matches, Randy Orton's transformation impresses, and Gunther's intentional style is effective

Bret Hart's influence in wrestling is undeniable, as shown by the struggles of those attempting his signature move. The Judgment Day's loss in the main event was unexpected but could lead to a future one-on-one match between Rhea and Dominic. Randy Orton's physical transformation and wrestling skills continue to impress, making him a standout performer. Despite criticism of Gunther's supposed boring style, the pacing and execution of his matches are intentional and effective. Overall, the matches showcased a mix of unexpected results and impressive performances.

    • Mark Henry's Career TransformationsMark Henry, a former WWE superstar and Olympic weightlifter, transformed from a wrestling fan to a world champion and Hall of Famer, and continued his impact through radio, comedy, and family focus in All Elite Wrestling.

Mark Henry, a former WWE superstar and Olympic weightlifter, has had an impressive career both inside and outside the wrestling ring. Despite his massive size and intimidating presence, Henry started as a wrestling fan and worked his way up from humble beginnings to become a world champion and a Hall of Famer. He also had a successful Olympic weightlifting career, breaking records and making headlines. Henry's impact on the wrestling world extends beyond his in-ring performances, as he has a radio show, Bust It Open, and a stand-up comedy act. His recent move to All Elite Wrestling allowed him more time for these projects and to focus on his family. Despite the shifting responsibilities throughout his career, Henry remains a beloved figure in the wrestling community.

    • Modern wrestling presentation and consumptionThere's a need for a conscious effort to hire and showcase bigger performers in wrestling to maintain contrast and spectacle, while also improving psychology and storytelling.

The way wrestling is presented and consumed has changed, with smaller performers dominating the scene and bigger performers struggling to make an impact. The speaker expresses a deep love for wrestling and a desire to watch it live to fully appreciate the experience. He laments the lack of proper psychology and storytelling in modern wrestling, particularly when it comes to big performers. The speaker believes that companies need to make a conscious effort to hire and showcase bigger performers, as wrestling is a visual product that thrives on contrast and spectacle. He also criticizes the influence of the independent scene on the industry, with smaller performers being given undue attention and bigger performers being sidelined. The speaker calls for a return to the traditional wrestling formula, where big performers are given their due and used effectively to tell compelling stories.

    • Creative freedom vs directionEffective leadership in wrestling requires a balance between empowering talent and providing clear direction to prevent undervaluation and dissatisfaction.

Effective leadership in professional wrestling, or any creative industry, requires a balance between allowing creative freedom and providing clear direction. Mark Henry expressed his disappointment with the lack of creative control and guidance he received during his tenure with AEW, contrasting it with his experience working with Triple H at WWE. He emphasized the importance of a leader who empowers talent to grow and succeed while also being open to their suggestions and ideas. Without this balance, talent may feel undervalued and uninspired, leading to a lack of competitive matches and overall dissatisfaction within the company.

    • Marketing nuances, Grassroots marketingMarketing success requires understanding industry nuances and utilizing grassroots methods. Executive level experience and learning from mistakes contribute to growth.

Experience and understanding the nuances of marketing and the industry are crucial for success. Mark Henry shared his experiences of encountering marketing oversights and the importance of grassroots marketing methods. He also highlighted the significance of gaining executive level experience and learning the ropes on the job, which paved the way for the evolution of the developmental system in wrestling. Despite facing challenges, Henry emphasized the importance of supporting the industry and its people, as they all contribute to its success. He expressed his desire to learn from past mistakes and continue growing, both in and out of the ring.

    • Wrestling's authenticityMark Henry's physical strength and the damage it caused were often underestimated due to the assumption that wrestling is scripted. Henry emphasized the importance of authenticity in the sport.

Mark Henry's physical strength in wrestling was underestimated by fans due to the perception that it was all staged. Henry shared stories of the genuine damage done to his body during performances, such as bending tempered steel or being involved in real fights. These incidents were often overlooked by fans who assumed everything was scripted. Henry expressed regret that these moments didn't receive the recognition they deserved and emphasized the importance of authenticity in professional wrestling. He also shared stories of camaraderie and support from fellow wrestlers, reminding us that behind the scenes, they were looking out for each other.

    • Emotional expression in entertainmentEmotional expression and transparency are valuable assets in entertainment and life. They can resonate deeply with audiences and set individuals apart, but it's important to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels seen and appreciated.

Emotional expression and transparency are valuable assets in entertainment and life. The ability to harness and control emotions can set individuals apart and resonate deeply with audiences. However, it's important to remember that everyone's journey and experiences are unique. Some may face challenges and criticism for being emotionally open, but their impact can be significant. The story of Chris Kangen, a wrestler who felt unappreciated for his contributions and ultimately took his own life, serves as a reminder of the importance of valuing and supporting talent, regardless of their differences. It's crucial to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels seen and appreciated for their unique gifts. Emotional expression and transparency can be powerful tools for connection and growth.

    • Identifying raw talent in wrestlingMark Henry emphasizes recognizing individuals with confidence and charisma as promising prospects for wrestling industry, sharing examples of Jade Cargill, Baron Corbin, and Jacob Henry.

Identifying raw talent and potential in individuals, especially in the world of professional wrestling, often comes down to their unique presence and ability to captivate an audience. Mark Henry, a renowned wrestling legend, emphasizes the importance of recognizing those individuals who exude confidence and charisma, even before they step into the ring. He shares stories of discovering talents like Jade Cargill, Baron Corbin, and Jacob Henry, who all exhibited an uncanny ability to draw attention and entertain, even outside of the wrestling context. These individuals, Henry believes, have a natural gift for the art and a deep passion for it, which sets them apart and makes them promising prospects for the industry.

    • Mark Henry's friendshipMark Henry cherishes the support and friendship of those around him, especially during tough times, as exemplified by a story about a friend's help during a difficult moment.

Despite the misconceptions about wrestlers' court, Henry emphasized that it was meant to entertain and not take things too seriously. Overall, the interview showcased Mark Henry's charisma, humor, and appreciation for the people and experiences that have shaped his life.

    • Wrestling event protocolIn a live wrestling event, protecting talent is priority, but in unique situations, intervening to prevent harm to talent, even if against protocol, can save careers.

During a live wrestling event, the priority is to protect the talent at all costs. However, in a unique situation where Mark Henry was attacked by a fan, the speaker deviated from protocol and intervened to prevent Mark from reacting aggressively, potentially ending his career. The speaker emphasized Mark's kindness and genuine nature, encouraging listeners to check out his full interview for insight into his wrestling journey, thoughts on the industry, and personal stories.
