What is Reiki? | Weekly Wellness Tip #22

In this episode, Naturopathic Reiki Master Teacher, Dominique D. Wilson, explains Reiki for beginners. You’ll learn how energy healing works and how to use Reiki to improve your health - physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

    What is Reiki?

The word Reiki (Japanese) or Sekhem (Kemetic) means "Universal or Spiritual" (Rei) "Life Force Energy" (Ki).

Reiki is a traditional Japanese method of energy healing, which induces relaxation, reduces stress, and enhances the body's natural ability to heal itself on all levels of being—physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual.

Reiki Therapy consists of a gentle flow of conscious life force energy being channeled through the therapist to the recipient using gentle touch or the ancient art of distance healing.

What are the Benefits of Reiki?

Reiki works on a causal level opening the way to wellness by removing energetic debris from the aura, which in turn impacts the body on all other levels—physical, mental, and emotional.

Of its many therapeutic benefits, the most well-known are that Reiki promotes deep relaxation, physical and emotional pain relief, emotional harmony, a healthy immune system, stress-reduction, less bodily tension, and more restful sleep. It also enhances stamina, intuition, mental clarity, meditation, spiritual awareness, intuition, and self-awareness.

One of the most powerful uses for Reiki therapy is emotional healing from trauma because it is a very self-paced, non-invasive way to work on the subtle energies that influence the way in which we respond to happenings within our environment.

Due to the detoxifying quality of Reiki and yoga (meditation and breathwork), releasing pent-up emotions that are stored as tension in various areas of the body is another unique healing benefit of a continuous Reiki therapy plan, such as my Emotional Healing Program.

    How Reiki Works

Because Reiki is Universal Life Force Energy it is infinite, unbound by time or space, conscious, omniscient (all-knowing), omnipresent (everywhere), and omnipotent (all-powerful).

Each Reiki therapist is attuned to specific healing frequencies within the Universal Life Force, and can channel them to any willing recipient using the power of intention. Because the energy is sourced from the Universe itself, providing Reiki therapy neither not disrupts nor depletes the personal energy of the therapist. In fact, the very act of channeling Reiki is also a very healing, relaxing experience for the therapist as well.

Because the energy is conscious, Reiki will flow to where it is most needed at the time of treatment in order to assist in restoring the personal energy of the recipient to a state of wellness.

There are 3 Levels of Reiki Attunement under the Usui Reiki tradition (click here to read my post on the origins and history of Reiki):

A Reiki Level 1 Practitioner is equipped for self-treatment, as well as family, close friends, and pets.

A Reiki Level 2 Practitioner is equipped to work as a therapist and share Reiki with the public in a professional capacity.

A Reiki Master/Teacher (Reiki Level 3 Practitioner) has undergone further attunement and special training to work even deeper, at the cellular level of the body, to support individuals in their healing from the level of cause. They are also prepared to pass on the Reiki teachings and attunements to new students.

Reiki can be channeled to a recipient either in-person through gentle touch or via the distance healing method.

The only objective of a Reiki therapist during a session is to be a clear channel for Reiki to freely flow according to the recipient's highest good.

In therapy, there is no agenda to command a specific result because Reiki is conscious energy that follows the Universal Law of free will. Reiki can do no harm, and will only work for those who are receptive to it. It is not a religion, nor is it affiliated with any religion.

What to Expect During a Reiki Session with Dominique

I combine Naturopathic and Kemetic methods of energy healing based on my client's expressed needs and the intention she/he sets for the session. I don't separate either style of Reiki, but incorporate elements of both along with my 20+ year background in herbalism and nutrition.

Each appointment begins with a brief intake to establish a focus for the session and for you to vocalize any boundaries so that you are comfortable and at ease during the session.

If it's your first appointment, you'll also discuss your medical history based on your completed intake form which is provided by the therapist prior to your appointment.

As a client, you will remain fully-clothed at all times. I will always ask first if you are okay with light touch, if there are any sensitive areas you wish for me to avoid, etc. You will never be pressured to do anything that is uncomfortable for you (i.e. lay on a table, close your eyes, etc.). We can modify the session as needed anytime!

Next, you will be smudged and taken through a guided meditation with light breath work as you relax and prepare to receive Reiki.

Reiki begins to flow automatically once I set an intention, and is then channeled to you as you relax (fully-clothed) on a comfortable Reiki table or chair.

In-person treatment is given through soft touch "laying on hands" in a series of positions across the body. However, physical touch isn't necessary—Reiki can be channeled to you by hovering my hand over your body or remotely using the distance healing method.

After the initial guided meditation, you will receive an aura scan to detect your overall energy. I will then cleanse and rebuild your aura if needed before starting your chakra therapy. Your session will include crystal therapy, sound healing and elemental therapy in addition to other healing methods as I see fit.

Most clients report feeling deeply relaxed, and some experience slight tingling, warm or cool sensations as Reiki flows through their body. Some even fall asleep, which is okay because it's a beautiful indicator of deep relaxation. However, others feel nothing at all and that, too, is just fine. The energy is still working.

We will conclude your appointment with a brief discussion for you to share your experience, ask questions, and receive a follow-up care plan.

Your follow-up care plan may include suggestions on herbs, foods, journaling, and chakra exercises for you to continue self-care at following your appointment based on what came up in therapy.

Healing The Mother Wound | Weekly Wellness Tip 20

Healing The Mother Wound | Weekly Wellness Tip 20

Healing The Mother Wound | Weekly Wellness Tip #20

Here in the US, Mother’s Day is promoted as a time of celebration, connection, gratitude for the woman who brought you into this world and for the woman or women who nurtured and sustained you along the way.

We are bombarded with images of smiling mothers who are warm, caring, strong, and compassionate.

But what you don’t see are the thousands of women who feel like outsiders looking into a world they’ve never experienced or perhaps no longer feel they have the ability to participate in.

Women who despite their grief over departed loved ones and loss...

Women who, despite their memories of childhood abuse, neglect, rejection, abandonment, and shame…

Are bombarded with images that say, “this is what you should be experiencing. So, show some gratitude.”

Women who are aggressively and carelessly invited along in a few weeks of a nationwide rumpus, a cookie-cutter, Stepford-like, depiction of motherhood...

A glamorization of the one experience they want more than anything else in the world, but feel permanently separated from.

So, if you’ve ever felt invisible on mother’s day due to the commercialization and sensationalism of an idea that simply ran wild—I want to acknowledge you.

You are not alone and healing is available to you when you are ready.

***Trigger Warning: This episode is NOT for everyone.***

If this message resonates with you, then I challenge you to consider taking a more active role to reframe your interpretation of Mother’s Day and what you feel it represents by shifting your focus to the practice of nurturing YOU.

The following are questions that you can reflect upon in your journal to gain a deeper understanding of yourself as you explore authentic ways to heal.

    Journal Prompts

What story are you choosing to live in regarding the parent-child relationship and your relationship with your mother?

Where did this story come from? Is it fact or can it change?

Are you holding onto unreasonable expectations of yourself and others in your life?

Notice what comes up for you around Mother’s Day.

    Are there any specific triggers?

What about the scenario, gesture, image, etc is really bothering you? Why?

What patterns are you seeing replayed in your relationships as a woman, sister, mom, friend, relative, spouse, partner, or colleague (especially with other women)?

Are they yours or are they unconscious, impulses, and behaviors?

What is it that you’ve always wanted, longed for, that you feel you didn’t receive from your mother?

In what ways can you give those things to yourself?

What’s 1 thing you can do to start that process this week?

    How do you define self-care?

How well are you meeting your basic needs (food, hydration, sleep, sex, companionship, adventure, spiritual connection, etc.)?

Inner Guidance Meditation by Dominique D. Wilson | Weekly Wellness Tip #18

Inner Guidance is a deeply relaxing, 15-minute guided meditation will help you with grounding, alignment, self-trust, intuition, stress-relief, and self-awareness.

You can use this meditation as a part of your daily self-care routine or take a break and listen whenever you're feeling out of alignment.

Do you ever feel indecisive about your path because you have so many creative ideas that all seem great?

Do you overanalyze things and have a hard time recognizing the feelings and voice of your intuition?

Are you stuck in a frustrating cycle of perfectionism, procrastination, brain fog, and being easily distracted on a mental or emotional level?

If you answered YES to any of those, then Dominique's Inner Guidance Meditation is for you!

Although there are tons of tools, resources, and experts out there who can provide you with guidance along your path—no one can honestly tell you what is right for you according to your highest good because it's YOUR vision, YOUR journey...YOUR life.

Furthermore, your ability to effectively perceive and recognize intuitively what is true for you is crucial to your personal and spiritual growth.

That's why Inner Guidance was created! Enjoy this time to consciously connect with your Higher Self.

    Namaste.
