ICYMI - Barack Obama on "A Promised Land," Nurturing Future Leaders and Black Lives Matter

    enJanuary 11, 2021

    Podcast Summary

    • Connecting with community and shared interestsEngaging in community activities and shared passions can bring hope, support, and growth during uncertain times.

Building strong community connections and engaging in meaningful activities, whether it's through volunteering or sharing common interests, can bring hope, support, and growth in uncertain times. Neighbor to Neighbor encourages us to connect with those around us, while Morning Footy offers an opportunity to explore a shared passion for soccer. On a different note, former President Barack Obama emphasizes the importance of finding one's voice and making a difference, even if it means enduring challenges and lengthy books. Through his experiences and reflections, he encourages young people to believe in their potential and make an impact in their own way.

    • A Call to Optimism from Barack ObamaBarack Obama's new book inspires young people to maintain a sense of optimism and determination, pushing for change despite structural challenges and frustrations, with personal stories and insights from his experiences as a world leader.

That Barack Obama's new book serves as a call to optimism for young people trying to make a difference in the world, despite the structural challenges and frustrations they may face. Obama encourages a mentality of constant striving and imagination for something better, even when things don't go exactly as planned. He acknowledges the realities of political systems and the limitations of popular proposals, but emphasizes the importance of maintaining a sense of impatience and frustration with the status quo. Obama also shares his personal experiences and connections with world leaders, revealing a lighter side of himself and emphasizing the importance of maintaining human connections even in the midst of political turmoil. Overall, Obama's message is one of hope and determination, encouraging young people to keep pushing for change despite the obstacles they may face.

    • Leadership making a differenceAngela Merkel's stance on immigration and Obama Foundation's leadership programs inspire inclusive leadership, contrasting strongman leadership.

Despite the challenges and complexities of leadership, there are good people making a difference in the world, even in positions of power. Angela Merkel's stance on immigration is an example of this. The Obama Foundation's leadership programs aim to inspire young people to become leaders who understand the importance of inclusivity, collaboration, and unlocking the potential of others. This democratic, inclusive leadership stands in contrast to the strongman leadership that has been on the rise in various parts of the world. The contest between these two visions of leadership will continue, and the US, despite its diminished influence, still has a role to play in this global conversation.

    • Understanding America's role and other countries' agencyAmerica's influence is important, but other countries should have their own capabilities and values. Consistent application of principles like rule of law, human rights, and democracy benefits the world, regardless of leadership.

While America's influence on the global stage has been significant, it's important for other countries to have their own capabilities and agency. The values America has championed, such as rule of law, human rights, and democracy, are not exclusive to America. However, it's crucial to acknowledge America's past mistakes and the paradox between its actions and the values it asserts. The world would benefit from a more consistent application of these principles, regardless of which country leads the way. The challenge for leaders is to inherit and manage the legacies of past actions, learning from both successes and failures.

    • Balancing safety and ethics in counterterrorismFormer President Obama emphasized the importance of grappling with complex counterterrorism issues, balancing safety and ethics, and seeking nuanced information.

Leading a nation, especially in the realm of counterterrorism, involves a constant struggle between ensuring safety and acting ethically. Former U.S. President Barack Obama discussed this dilemma in an interview, sharing his obligation to protect American people while acknowledging the tragic consequences of military actions. He emphasized the importance of grappling with these complex issues and encouraged awareness from both leaders and the public. The media, he noted, can sometimes oversimplify these conflicts, making it crucial for individuals to seek out nuanced information. Ultimately, Obama's message highlights the importance of balancing security with morality and ethics.

    • Barack Obama's optimistic yet cautious take on Black Lives MatterObama recognized the movement's impact and courage, but expressed concerns about losing potential allies with certain slogans, acknowledging the importance of gaining enough support to institutionalize change.

The Black Lives Matter movement, sparked by the murder of George Floyd, brought about significant activism and conversation around police reform, despite some criticisms of its slogans. Former President Barack Obama expressed optimism about the movement's impact and courage, but acknowledged concerns about potentially losing potential allies with certain slogans, such as "Defund the police." However, it's important to note that the meaning behind slogans can be open to interpretation, and the subtext of a slogan can hold more weight than its surface meaning. Obama's comments were not meant as a criticism of the movement, but rather a recognition of the importance of gaining enough support to institutionalize change. Overall, the movement's impact and activism far exceeded what Obama believed he could have accomplished at their age, shifting the conversation around racial justice in ways he hadn't imagined before.

    • Communicating complex issues effectivelyEffective communication and precise language are crucial in advocating for change, considering diverse audiences and perspectives, recognizing distinct roles in social progress, and understanding structural advantages in the political system.

Effective communication and the use of precise language are crucial in advocating for change, especially when it comes to complex issues like policing and social justice. It's essential to consider various audiences and their perspectives when choosing language to ensure understanding and persuasion. The roles of activists, movement leaders, and elected officials are distinct, with each contributing unique voices and actions towards social progress. The Republican Party's success in recent elections, despite holding extreme views, can be attributed to structural advantages in the US political system rather than a free rein on bombastic beliefs. It's important to recognize the importance of each role and the need for clear, persuasive communication in driving meaningful change.

    • Divided Political Landscape, Less Need for Progressive OutreachFormer Pres. Obama advised progressives not to mimic GOP's divisive tactics, focusing instead on inspiring new leaders and addressing injustices through their foundation.

The political landscape is divided, with approximately 60% of the population residing in more homogeneous groups who require less outreach and less representation of diverse perspectives. Former President Barack Obama emphasized the importance of not emulating the current Republican Party's model for progressives, as they have less need to appeal to a broad base. Obama also discussed his ability to inspire people to run for office with his roasts and jests, and he shared that he and his wife Michelle have found satisfaction in their post-presidency lives, focusing on making an impact through their foundation. Despite no longer holding the presidency, they remain frustrated by injustices and continue to seek ways to create change.

    • Former President Barack Obama discusses the importance of positive role models for young people and building strong community connections.Obama highlights the impact of positive role models on young people and the significance of community connections for support and disaster preparedness.

Leaving a positive impact on the next generation and building strong community connections are valuable legacies. Former President Barack Obama expressed this sentiment during his interview on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. He emphasized that the influence young people may gain from observing positive role models could exceed any accomplishments made during formal positions. Meanwhile, Neighbor to Neighbor, a California volunteer network, encourages community bonding and disaster preparedness through neighborly assistance. In a world that sometimes feels disconnected, this organization emphasizes the importance of relying on one's neighbors for support. Lastly, football fans can start their day with Morning Footy, a podcast dedicated to covering all aspects of the global game and fostering a sense of community among listeners.

1395 Is Mediocrity Leading Your Life

1395 Is Mediocrity Leading Your Life

Is mediocrity leading your life? Because nothing will change until you make a choice to make a change. You were created for greatness!

And that doesn't mean you settle for the cards life dealt you. God created you with dreams and a purpose greater than what life gives you.

Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. http://bit.ly/WomenofIMPACT

But if you're willing to ONLY accept the cards dealt you, where will you be? Most likely, right where you are.

Your circumstances do not define who you are nor whom you were created to be.

Be known for whom God is creating within you.

Think beyond what the world says you can do. Limitations are only boundaries for those who walk in fear without their faith in God.

    So where are your limitations?

    • Health
    • Finances
    • Mindset
    • Belief
    • Family
    • Career
    • Circumstances

You can come up with all the excuses you want. Limitations will not only hold you back, but stunt your dreams.

You want more in your life, rise above your circumstances.

The K.I.S.S. ~ Rise above your circumstances!

"God has not called you to fit in." ~ 1 Peter 2:9

God created you to stand out. Not to fit in amongst the average, or the norm. You were not created for mediocre!

You were created with greatness, a heavenly calling here on earth.

Don't give in to what the world dishes out. Instead dish out your greatness by living your dreams, and rising above your circumstances.

    1. Know the starting line. Where are you now?
    2. Know where you want to go. What is the next step?
    3. Know how to get there. How are you going to get there?

One step at a time leads to miles of greatness.

I want you to challenge yourself this week.

TAKE A.I.M. = What is it that you want by the end of the year?

By the time Friday rolls around, answer that question and get ready to be known! Know the starting line. Know where you want to go. And know how to get there.

Mediocrity no longer leads your life if you make a choice to make a change to impact the world!

"When you rise above your circumstances, greatness leads your life."
