ICYMI - Jordan Klepper Fingers the Pulse - Why Is the Iowa Caucus First?

    enFebruary 02, 2020

    Podcast Summary

    • Iowa Caucus: Up Close and Personal with Presidential CandidatesIowa's first-in-the-nation caucus provides voters with unparalleled access to candidates, shaping informed decisions and setting the tone for the primary season.

The Iowa caucus holds a unique significance in the presidential primary process due to the close interaction with candidates. Morning Footy hosts shared their experiences of meeting and interacting with various candidates, including Andrew Yang and Cory Booker, in their homes and public events. This accessibility sets the Iowa caucus apart from other primary events, creating a sense of excitement and importance. The hosts also discussed the significance of Iowa being the first state to cast votes in the Democratic primary. Despite some confusion during the conversation, they emphasized the historical importance of the event. The close interaction with candidates in Iowa allows voters to make informed decisions and sets the tone for the rest of the primary season.

    • Iowa's First Position in Presidential Primaries Based on Historical AccidentIowa's first position in the presidential primaries is not based on demographic representation but historical accident, leading to criticisms of lack of diversity in the caucuses.

The reason Iowa holds the first presidential caucus in the nation is due to historical accident rather than representation of the country's demographics. This tradition began in 1972 due to paperwork issues and was solidified by Jimmy Carter's win in 1976. However, Iowa's lack of diversity, which is over 90% white, has been a subject of criticism. Critics argue that the caucuses do not reflect the country's demographics, with only a small percentage of non-white participants. Despite these criticisms, Iowa continues to hold its position as the first state to vote in the presidential primaries. Iowa's supporters argue that the state represents the whole country, but it is clear that it does not fully embody the diversity of the United States.

    • Iowa's Role in the Presidential Primary and Perception of Lack of DiversityIowa, the first state in the presidential primary process, faces criticism for its lack of diversity. While some argue it's not representative, Iowans believe their discussions are focused on what's best for all Americans.

While Iowa may not be demographically representative of the entire United States, it is a state that takes its role in the presidential primary process seriously and engages in civil discourse. However, there is a perception that Iowa is not diverse, both in theory and in practice. This perception was discussed during a segment on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, where it was noted that while Iowa does have a Hispanic Latino population, it is not as visible as in other areas. The segment also touched on the idea that Iowa's status as the first state in the primary process gives it an advantage and raises questions about whether the country would benefit from starting the primary season with a more diverse state. Despite this, Iowa residents argue that they are open-minded and compassionate, and that their discussions are focused on what is best for all Americans, not just their own interests. The segment also poked fun at the frequent mix-ups of state names during the discussion.

1 in 4 community college students studies at a California college. Meet the man in charge of them

California Community Colleges Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley knows firsthand the importance of receiving both an affordable, quality education and the proper guidance during those years. After serving in the Army following high school and then transferring from Golden West College to UC Irvine, Oakley ultimately became the first Latino to serve as Chancellor for the largest system of higher education in the country while also sitting on the board of Regents for the University of California. He opens up to host Giselle Fernandez about the initiatives he's implemented in order to ensure students receive the best education possible — one of which aims to eliminate inequities and achievement gaps so that college is more accessible, diverse and affordable. Oakley also discusses the challenges community college students have faced in the past year with the COVID-19 pandemic, which has actually helped shine a light on problems communities have faced all along — such as limited broadband access.
