ICYMI - Tyra Banks Looks Back at Sports Illustrated 22 Years Later

    enAugust 12, 2019

    Podcast Summary

    • Tyra Banks breaks barriers with multiple Sports Illustrated Swimsuit coversTyra Banks, a trailblazer, graced the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover twice, inspiring representation for black women and those with normal figures, and embracing her body confidently despite societal norms.

Tyra Banks, a supermodel, entrepreneur, and media mogul, has broken barriers in the fashion industry by gracing the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue not once, but twice - the first time being 22 years ago when representation for black women and those with normal figures was scarce. Her return to the cover, 25 to £30 heavier, showcased her confidence and acceptance of her body, challenging societal norms and inspiring self-esteem. Despite initial fears and vulnerability, she embraced her appearance and felt empowered, leaving a lasting impact on the industry and her fans.

    • Progress in modeling industry with diverse representationSocial media amplifies consumer voices, driving positive change in modeling industry with diverse representation. Brands risk losing relevance without embracing diversity.

The modeling industry is experiencing positive change, as evidenced by the increasing representation of diverse models in high-profile campaigns and magazine covers. This change can be attributed to the power of social media, which amplifies the voices of consumers and holds the fashion industry accountable for its lack of diversity. A prime example of this progress is the recent cover featuring a black model and a black photographer, which has received overwhelmingly positive feedback. However, there is still work to be done, as true inclusivity and representation go beyond just token gestures. Brands that fail to adapt and embrace diversity risk losing relevance and ultimately, their customer base.

    • Discovering Unique Origin Stories and Paying it ForwardUnderstanding and effectively communicating your unique origin story can lead to more opportunities, success, and hiring of top talent. Being different is better than being better.

Everyone, regardless of background or field, can leverage their unique experiences and personal brand to stand out in competitive industries. Tara Banks, a successful model and TV host, shared her story of discovering Sport Illustrated's groundbreaking cover featuring Loretta Houston and wanting to pay it forward. By teaching personal branding at Stanford for three years, Banks showed how essential it is for professionals to differentiate themselves. Whether in the business world or other fields, understanding one's unique origin story and effectively communicating it can lead to more opportunities, success, and hiring of top talent. Banks emphasized that being different is better than being better and that what you stand for will attract the best opportunities and people.

    • Embracing change and empowerment through personal brandingRenaming oneself as a personal brand symbolizes change, age, diversity, and inclusivity, while empowering individuals to break free from limiting stereotypes and make a significant impact.

Building a strong personal brand can benefit both individuals and organizations, including non-profits. Tyra Banks, a renowned model and entrepreneur, emphasized this idea during her conversation on The Daily Show. She shared her personal experience of renaming herself as "Banks" and how it symbolizes embracing change, age, diversity, and inclusivity in the modeling industry. Banks also highlighted the importance of self-empowerment and breaking free from limiting stereotypes. This transformation not only represents a new phase in her modeling career but also serves as an inspiration for her students and the industry as a whole. By developing a unique and authentic personal brand, individuals can make a significant impact, whether it's through their businesses or non-profit ventures.

08 - Gerald Cadogen - It's How You Play The Game

08 - Gerald Cadogen - It's How You Play The Game

Today my guest is Gerald Cadogan. Gerald was a HS football phenom from PM, OH who went on to letter and start at Penn State under Joe Paterno. In 2008, he was a candidate for college football's prestigious Draddy Trophy, presented annually to the nation's top college football student-athlete.

During his senior season he was named a consensus first team All-Big Ten selection and was awarded the conference's Sportsmanship Award and named an Academic All-American for a second time.

After much success in college including Orange, Rose, Outback and Alamo bowl appearances, he was invited to the NFL Scouting Combine where his split time in the 40 ranked him fifth among offensive linemen at the combine.

This began his professional football career,  where he was signed to the Cincinnati Bengals’, Carolina Panthers’, Indianapolis Colts’, Philadelphia Eagles’, and San Diego (now Los Angeles) Chargers’ practice squads before finishing his football career in the Canadian Football League with the Calgary Stampeders and the Toronto Argonauts, whom Cadogan won a Grey Cup with in 2012.

Besides all these athletic accolades, Gerald is kind. He is generous. He is motivated to make a positive impact on the world.

As such, coming full-circle, Gerald has returned to Portsmouth and is a teacher and coach in the halls he once walked as a student. He’s also very much involved in his community.

“I wanted to come back to Portsmouth to make an impact on the community in a positive way,” Cadogan said. “That’s why I came back and have stayed. I want to empower the next generation to continue to grow this community in all facets.”

Cadogan has also held a youth sports camp in Portsmouth, bringing his former college teammates as well as current NFL players to be guest coaches, as part of his involvement in the community. He feels that “It is important to stay involved and help other young people realize their potential and achieve their goals.”

And instructs them “Take advantage of every opportunity to help someone else, because that someone in need one day could be you.”

    Advice we could all take…
