    About this Episode

COVID has changed the way we work and live.  Unemployment rates went up.  But did you know that individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities have an unemployment rate of over 80% at baseline?  Imagine if you went through school only to be told that you may not have a job afterwards?

So what is life like in these families?  In this authentic conversation, facing the trials and joys of raising a child with an Intellectual and Developmental Disability, I welcome Noelle Alix, a finance attorney and co-owner of Beanz and Co, a cafe that focuses on inclusive employment.

Join me on this personal and emotional journey of the life of families who not only have to plan for themselves, but also the responsibility of planning for their children's future in a way that many people don't have to.

    #MoreThanPrivacy - S2E4

    #MoreThanPrivacy - S2E4

People often think that HIPAA is there to help prevent people from finding out about their personal information.  In actuality, the law actually focuses on the "portability" and "accountability" of such data, and where and how it can be shared.  In casual lingo, people often joke around, "oh that's HIPAA" or "that's a HIPAA violation," and even medical offices sometimes refuse to send records without a signed release (which isn't required by HIPAA when it is going to another treating provider).

But of course, HIPAA Is one aspect.  Did you know by law you have a right to NOT have your treatment information sent to your insurance company?  Did you know that you can access your entire medical record?  Did you know hospitals are required by law to show their prices transparently, but as for now, many hospitals are still not compliant?

In this engaging conversation with Dr. Phil Eskew (direct primary care doctor, lawyer and businessman), we will explore some of these key legal issues that impact the world of health care so that as a consumer, you are more informed of what that looks like and means.

    #AnotherWayToPay - S2E3

    #AnotherWayToPay - S2E3

People often confuse health insurance with health care.  They are NOT the same.  Insurance is a way of PAYING for care, and is not care in itself.

Health insurance is also just ONE way of paying for higher cost care.  There are other ways to pay for care, one of which is medical cost sharing.  Many individuals have chosen this method of paying for higher cost expenses, and often times it is much cheaper than traditional insurance.

In this episode, we are joined by Eric Baird, founder of Health Share Support, as we learn more about this alternative way of paying for higher cost health expenses, which pairs very nicely with direct primary care, at fractions of the cost of traditional health insurance.
