At the height of my marriage I was successful in sales, we had two kids, we fought about getting a dog… and I was arrogant as can be. I came home one day and there was that damn dog! It turns out if I could have been as nice to my wife as I was to that damn dog I might still be married today.

This episode is about “if I treated my wife as nice as I treated that damn dog”. I fought with my wife about getting a dog for ever. Dawn is my x-wife and the boys mom and we get to laugh about these stories.
At the height of my marriage to Dawn I was successful in the mortgage business, I was making good money for the family… I was in my mid to late 30’s and I had a good run. Had a couple a young kids and I was arrogant, she was a stay at home mom, and I was like “I’m working, I’m producing, I’m bringing home the bacon…” And in hindsight I should be afforded certain “dickness” or “Assholeness”. I was surfing a lot. I could be frustrated when I came home.
One time I was asked to grab something from the grocery store on the way home. Which was sort of on the way by the way. And I remember, I lost my shit… I had an arrogant attitude. It was going to be out so much to go get hamburger buns and lettuce…
“Machy” was the dogs name. A little Yorky. Little bastard pissed all over the house. We started calling him the crotch warmer 2000 cause he would sleep between my legs and keep my crotch warm. God I loved that dog!
Anyway, I come home one day and there’s that damn dog. She just went ahead and got it… I was always prioritizing my stuff. God forgive I brought her some flowers now and then… I was always scared if I bought her flowers it would escalate. So lame.
God I was a pain in the ass I had lots of opinions and was real snappy. I was just what you’d expect from an A type sales guy who demanded respect. This might sound worse than it is.
I just remember that at that time I’d come home and give that dog so much love and be so forgiving of that little dog. And in spite of the dogs little hiccups it had I loved and treated that dog very good.
I had this total moment of awareness, “OMG, if I could just be as nice to Dawn as I was to that damn dog, I might still be married today.”
…I talked about it once, and people thought it was really funny and a lot of successful husbands could relate. They were like “Holy crap, I perhaps treat my pets better than I do my family.”.
Holy crap - I’ve come a long way people, I have come a long way.
I would encourage you - If you are lucky enough to have a wife, and you’re luck enough to have a pet. Please treat your significant other as well as you treat your pet.
