The first step in this process is self-awareness, which involves understanding your emotions and learning to recognize their patterns. Emotional intelligence is often considered more important than cognitive intelligence for overall success and well-being. However, unlike IQ, emotional intelligence is not a fixed trait, and it can be improved with effort and dedication.

We weren't naturally taught these skills, and many of us learned unhealthy ways to cope with emotions from our parents. To improve self-regulation, we can explore various methods, such as mindfulness practices, physical activity, or creative outlets. By focusing on self-awareness and self-regulation, we can better understand ourselves and make positive changes in our lives.

    • Self-soothingPausing, deep breathing, and calming techniques help move from heightened emotional state to calm and relaxed state, allowing for thoughtful responses and growth.

      We can learn to self-soothe ourselves and regulate our emotional responses, which was a skill that may have been overlooked by previous generations due to their focus on survival during challenging times like the Great Depression. Self-soothing involves pausing before reacting, taking deep breaths, and practicing calming techniques to move from a heightened emotional state to a calm and relaxed state. As Victor Frankl, a psychologist who survived Nazi prison camps, noted, there is a space between stimulus and response, and in that space lies our freedom and power to choose our responses. Deep breathing is a simple yet effective way to trigger the relaxation response in our bodies and calm ourselves down. Additionally, practicing self-soothing during workouts can help us build the habit of moving from a heightened state to a calm state.
