Information That Would Get Your Attention

    en-usJanuary 17, 2024

    Podcast Summary

    • The role of luck in successReflecting on the potential impact of luck on success can broaden our perspectives and deepen our understanding of life's complexities

The most intriguing and valuable information to possess may be the impossible-to-obtain insight into the exact role of luck in successful outcomes. Yale economist Robert Shiller posed this idea, acknowledging that it's unattainable. Yet, pondering this concept can lead us to reconsider our understanding of success and the traits we deem essential. This thought-provoking notion challenges us to reflect on the significance of luck in our lives, which is often overlooked. While we may never have access to this information, the mere consideration of its potential impact can broaden our perspectives and deepen our understanding of life's complexities.

    • The world is far more complex than what we perceive through wordsIf we could observe people's thoughts directly, we would discover a world that is a hundred times wilder and more diverse than we assume.

The world is far more complex and diverse than what we perceive through spoken or written words. John Mulaney's comedic observation that we only hear the stories people are willing to tell resonates with the idea that most thoughts, beliefs, and emotions remain unexpressed. This filtering of information occurs due to various reasons, including social norms, embarrassment, and inability to articulate feelings. As a result, we only see a tiny fraction of what goes through people's minds. If we could observe people's thoughts directly, we would discover a world that is a hundred times wilder, more diverse, and more creative than we assume. We would witness people's anxieties, self-consciousness, jealousy, kindness, and wisdom, all of which lie beyond the boundaries of spoken and written language. This realization challenges us to broaden our perspectives and appreciate the richness and complexity of human experience.

    • The limits of our understandingWe can't fully grasp the complexity of other planets, civilizations, or even our own history with the limited information we have. Remember that our knowledge is limited and there's always more to discover.

Our understanding of the universe, other civilizations, and even our own history is limited to what we've observed or what's been recorded. Just as we cannot fully comprehend the vastness of the ocean based on a single cup of water, we cannot fully grasp the complexity of other planets or civilizations with the limited information we have. Similarly, history only reveals what has been documented, and even then, it is subject to misinterpretation and incompleteness. Moreover, there are infinite possibilities of who we could have become, and we can never meet all the versions of ourselves. This concept is not only true for individuals but also for civilizations and historical events. Therefore, it's essential to remember that our knowledge is limited, and there is always more to discover. Furthermore, the speaker emphasized that even with all the information available today, there will always be things we're blind to. So, while we should continue to seek knowledge, we should also be humble and acknowledge the limitations of our understanding.

    • Measuring a fulfilling life by our own potentialReflect on the infinite possibilities of who we could have become, be less judgmental of others, prioritize goals, appreciate present moment, and strive for a more meaningful life.

The definition of a fulfilling life may not be about comparing ourselves to others, but rather reflecting on the infinite possibilities of who we could have become. On our deathbeds, we meet every version of ourselves based on the choices we made and the circumstances we encountered. If our actual life falls in the top half of those possibilities, we've lived a good life. This perspective can help us be less judgmental of others and more mindful of the fragility of our own life's direction. The second takeaway is the importance of being aware of the time we have left. This awareness can motivate us to make the most of our time, prioritize our goals, and appreciate the present moment. By focusing on these two ideas, we can strive for a more meaningful and fulfilling life.

    • The idea of knowing our expiration dateKnowing our life expectancy would enable us to fully embody either 'life is short' or 'life is long' philosophy, impacting our career choices, vacation plans, and investment priorities.

Knowing the exact length of our lives would drastically change how we live. The idea of knowing our expiration date is both intriguing and terrifying. Some people would choose not to know, fearing the potential anxiety and regret. Others would embrace the knowledge, living each day to the fullest, forgiving petty annoyances, and cherishing every moment. The "life is short" philosophy encourages us to seize the day and enjoy life, while the "life is long" philosophy allows us to be less anxious and more patient. Both perspectives have their merits, and knowing our life expectancy would enable us to fully embody either philosophy. If we knew we had a long life ahead, we might be less anxious about our careers, take more vacations, and invest in long-term projects. Conversely, if we knew our time was limited, we might prioritize experiences over possessions and live each day with intention. Ultimately, the length of our lives is uncertain, and it's up to us to decide how to live each day. Whether we believe life is long or short, the knowledge of our time remaining would make us twice as informed and twice as productive, enabling us to make the most of every moment.

    • Effective Communication: Active Listening, Clear Messaging, and Body LanguageEffective communication involves active listening, clear messaging, body language, empathy, and emotional intelligence. Focusing on these skills can help build stronger relationships, avoid misunderstandings, and achieve goals more effectively.

Effective communication is key to success in any business or personal interaction. During our discussion, we explored various aspects of communication, including active listening, clear messaging, and body language. Active listening involves fully concentrating on the speaker, showing interest, and providing feedback. Clear messaging means conveying ideas in a concise and understandable way. Body language plays a crucial role in communication as well, as it can convey emotions and attitudes that words may not fully capture. Effective communication is especially important in a business context, where miscommunications can lead to misunderstandings, missed opportunities, and even conflicts. By focusing on active listening, clear messaging, and body language, we can improve our communication skills and build stronger relationships with colleagues, clients, and partners. Additionally, we discussed the importance of empathy and emotional intelligence in effective communication. Empathy allows us to understand and connect with others on a deeper level, while emotional intelligence helps us manage our own emotions and respond appropriately to the emotions of others. In summary, effective communication is a crucial skill for success in any area of life. By focusing on active listening, clear messaging, body language, empathy, and emotional intelligence, we can build stronger relationships, avoid misunderstandings, and achieve our goals more effectively.

The Long Run Is Just A Collection of Short Runs

Every great idea can be taken too far.

Take the notion that investors should ignore the short run.

It's important to recognize that the long run is just a collection of short runs, and capturing long-term growth means managing the short run effectively enough to ensure you can stick around for a long time.

Accountable to Darwin vs. Accountable to Newton

Accountable to Darwin vs. Accountable to Newton

Woodrow Wilson was the only president with a Ph.D. in political science.

He came to office having thought more about how a government functions than most before him or since.

One of his complaints was that too many people in government held the belief that it was a Big Machine: that once you set up a series of rules you could take your hands off the wheel and let the government run on its own forever. They viewed government like physics, with a set of customs and laws that required no updating or second-guessing because they were believed to be precise and perfect as they were.

Wilson thought that was wrong. He viewed government as being a living thing that adapted and evolved.

I really don't care about politics. But he had a theory that I think is so important, and so applicable, to us ordinary people managing our money.

The Dumber Side of Smart People

The Dumber Side of Smart People

Mae West said, “Too much of a good thing can be wonderful.” That might be true for some things – health, happiness, golden retrievers, maybe.

But in so many cases the thing that helps you can be taken to a dangerous level. And since it’s a “good thing,” not an obvious threat, its danger creeps into your life unnoticed.

    Take intelligence.

How could someone possibly be too intelligent? How do you get to a point where you realize you could have been more successful if you had been a little dumber?

Let me share three reasons why.

    How to Engage With History

    How to Engage With History

This episode discusses my take on what you should pay attention to when reading history.

There’s a quote I love from writer Kelly Hayes who says, “Everything feels unprecedented when you haven’t engaged with history.”

It’s so true. History’s cast of characters changes but it’s the same movie over and over again.

To me, the point of paying attention to history is not the specific details of certain events, which are always random and never repeat; it’s the big-picture behaviors that reoccur in different eras, generations, and societies.

    2123 The Power of Perspective

What you see depends on what you look for. What you look for you will find. How you see and experience life comes from the power of perspective.

When you look at your day and the circumstances you are in, what do you see?

Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACThttp://bit.ly/WomenofIMPACT

Do you see only the negative? Do you see only what's possible? Maybe you just don't care because you are living life as it happens.

How you see things shape your thoughts, your mindset, your intentions for the day, your opinions, your decisions, and your actions (plus reactions), and your responses.

And what you see comes from your perspective!!

Perspective is defined as a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something; a point of view.

However, I want you to consider the first definition of perspective as a noun.

Perspective is the art of drawing solid objects on a two-dimensional surface so as to give the right impression of their height, width, depth, and position in relation to each other when viewed from a particular point.

How interesting that perspective is based on how we see and experience things, and it also is defined from an artistic point of view.

There is depth to your situation. There is a sense of height as to how the seriousness of a circumstance you face. The position you are in is relative only to the viewpoint in which you see.

    The power of perspective.

“Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.” — Søren Kierkegaard (Danish Christian philosopher and theologian)

Have you ever tried to live life backwards? It is next to impossible. I can't imagine walking around backwards all day in order to go forwards.

But what Søren is saying here is that you may not understand why you are experiencing life the way you see it, but you still need to move forward regardless. The understanding may not come until years of forward progress.

Perspective can hold you back or push your forward. It's all in your presence. Presence rules perspective.

The K.I.S.S. ~ Presence rules perspective!

Your presence is what sets you apart from those who just hang-out for convenience living life. Life happens to them, not because of them.

Don't be absent when you can be present.

    1. What does this make possible? When you look at life from an optimistic perspective, what you perceive changes. There is a different landscape.
    2. Lead your day with gratitude. Nothing is more freeing to the mind than gratitude. If you are appreciative of the little things, when the big things happen, you will be able to see the little blessings in the big messes.
    3. Presence rules perspective. When you pay attention and are alert to what is happening around you, there is more beauty to experience and less strife. But if all we see are the problems and messes, you bet you'll only recognize that which is slammed in front of you.

You have a choice. Live life or let life live in you. You can live life with intention or live life with reactions. You get to decide this every day you are blessed in seeing the sun rise.

Don't take for granted what God has placed before you. Be aware of what is happening in your every day.

"One step at a time leads to miles of greatness!" ~ Kristianne Wargo

You have a wide lens and a narrow lens. It's not one-lens-fits-all.

Get in the game of life. Live life forward, and be okay when you only understand it backward.

"Be present. Be incredible. Be YOU!!!"

The Sweet Bitter with Susan Cain

The Sweet Bitter with Susan Cain

There’s something profound in life’s bitter moments. The transformative beauty of a sad song, the anguished past of a story’s hero, the unexpected turnout of a crowded funeral. Turns out we often need darkness in order to appreciate the light.

In our modern world, we focus so much on the pursuit of happiness that we often forego an appreciation of bitterness. Susan Cain has found a way to celebrate both the sweet and the bitter… in fact she’s written a bestselling book about it.

This is… A Bit of Optimism.

Oh, and did your team win?

Today, we will take a play out of the playbook and do a little Monday quarterbacking.

The K.I.S.S. ~ Spin it your way!

Now, you have many choices, rather you win or lose, fail or succeed.

But how you continue to move forward sets the tone for your journey!

You can choose to get stuck in your own patterns and habits, and make excuses for why you fell short and didn't make it to the finish line.

Or you can choose to do it differently without excuses, no matter the result.

    1. Play through the highs and lows. And in this, you are giving your best! You have to stay focused. You can't give up regardless of where you land. "When you take action, you make traction. Take A.I.M.!" ~ Kristianne Wargo
    2. Keep it fresh and be creative. You can play in the game of life however you want. You get to come up with innovative ideas. You get to play to your strengths, so you can tighten your weaknesses. Think outside the box. "Patterns only keep you anchored to what worked in the moment. A new moment requires new actions to anchor." ~ Kristianne Wargo
    3. Be teachable throughout life. You can't do what God designed you to do if you aren't willing to become who He created you to be. You have got to be teachable. You must be willing to learn more even when you're at your best.

Life isn't about proving who you are. What matters is whose you are. When you consider how to overcome your circumstances or challenges, you are leading your life well.

PRAYER: May your journey continue to be steps of greatness that lead you closer to God and what He has designed for your life.

"Be present. Be incredible. Be YOU!!!"
