He didn't waste time in organizing a search party and even managed to secure fuel for his plane despite the scarcity. The community of pilots rallied together, each taking on different areas to search for Mackenzie. Despite the grim possibilities, they remained hopeful and determined to find her. The quick response and unwavering commitment of Bobby and the community show the power of taking action in the face of adversity.

    • Phone records led to a false first clueDespite incorrect information, the search continued and determination kept the family hopeful until the discovery of the actual crash site.

During a desperate search for a missing pilot, phone records provided a crucial first clue, but the information seemed incorrect. Despite this confusion, the search continued, and just as hope was fading, a crashed plane was discovered. However, it turned out to be from a previous fatal accident, adding to the family's despair. The lack of a signal from the emergency beacon raised concerns about the severity of the crash, increasing the urgency of the search. Throughout the ordeal, the determination of the searchers kept the family hopeful, even as the odds seemed insurmountable.

The story of two park rangers, Josh and Nate, illustrates this concept as they encounter a herd of elk and witness a plane crash in the remote wilderness. Despite their injuries and fear, they are driven to help and investigate, leading them to break the cardinal rule of survival in the wilderness: sticking together. The windy and treacherous terrain posed additional challenges as they attempted to reach the crash site and assist any potential survivors. The experience was both awe-inspiring and terrifying, leaving them with a newfound appreciation for the power and unpredictability of nature.

    • A small mistake in navigation can lead to catastrophic consequencesDouble-checking information and being aware of surroundings can prevent disastrous navigation errors

A small mistake in navigation can have catastrophic consequences. Mackenzie Morgan's story is a testament to this as she inadvertently transposed a single digit in her GPS heading, leading her to fly into the Absaroka Mountains instead of towards home. Despite her initial relief when she saw water below her plane, she soon realized she was flying too high and the mountains were still looming above her. Unable to call for help due to lack of service, she had to rely on her own skills to survive. This harrowing experience underscores the importance of double-checking information and being aware of one's surroundings. Even a minor error can have serious repercussions, and in the case of flying, the stakes are particularly high.

Despite her injuries and the vast emptiness around her, she encountered a hunter, Josh Alexander, who helped her get through the ordeal. Their unlikely alliance, along with Josh's friend Nate, led them down the mountain to safety. Mackenzie's family and flight instructor were overjoyed to hear the news, and everyone was reunited at the hospital. This story serves as a reminder that even in the face of adversity, there is always hope for a positive outcome.

Episode 61: 1883 with Sarah Keyes and Josh Garrett-Davis

This week Sarah Keyes and Josh Garrett-Davis drop in to talk about settlers, Native Americans, the Overland Trail, and yes, dysentery via Taylor Sheridan's 1883. We also talk about the West on film, how the West has been portrayed in movies, books, tv, and video games, as well as question why the West is in a pop culture revival in current moment. This is a really fun conversation. Hope you dig it.

    About our guests:
Sarah Keyes is a historian of the United States. She specializes in the 19th century and the history of the U.S. West with a focus on the environment and intercultural interactions between Indigenous peoples and Euro-Americans. Her current work explores these topics along the overland trails to Oregon and California in the mid-19th century. Her first book, American Burial Ground: A New History of the Overland Trail, was published by the University of Pennsylvania Press in October 2023. Keyes has also begun work on her second project, a regional and transnational study of suffrage in the U.S. West, for which she was recently awarded a Mellon-Schlesinger Summer Research Grant from the Schlesinger Library at Harvard University.

His article “The Intertribal Drum of Radio: The Indians for Indians Hour and Native American Media, 1941–1951” appeared in Western Historical Quarterly in 2018 and won the Oscar O. Winther Award. He has written for numerous other publications.

    Mule Deer In The Desert

    Mule Deer In The Desert

In this episode we talk about one of my favorite topics: hunting mule deer in open country. We look forward to these hunts and since the tags can be so hard to draw, we want to arm ourselves with the right gear and the right mindset. What are the things we are looking for on an aerial photo? What are we looking for at a water hole? How far do big bucks bed from their water? Where are they right now and how to separate them from the mountain mahogany or the sage brush with a spotting scope or a good binocular? This is it folks! This is deer season and these tags are getting harder to draw. Hunt mule deer and you will come to respect this animal. It’s a big game of chess and you only have a few days to get the pieces in place to put the king in your sights. Western Adventure with Ma

    Western Adventure with Ma

My Mom and I flew out to Billings, MT on Tuesday August 14th and rented a car for a week to go explore the Great Out West. We visited the Battle of Little Big Horn on the first day and ended up in Buffalo, WY by the second night just missing Longmire Days which was the previous weekend. We then drove through the beautiful country side into Cody, WY by the third day and took in a rodeo of coarse. Our fourth day landed us in Jackson Hole, WY after driving through half of beautiful Yellowstone and Grand Tetons National Parks. We ended up crashing out there for a couple nights as Mom came down with pneumonia. After she stared to feel a little better, we continued on back north through the Tetons and Yellowstone checking out Old Faithful and running with the buffalo. We then had a close call as we coasted down Bear Tooth Pass in the dark and almost on fumes but found gas and a nice hotel in Red Lodge, MT for our sixth night on the road. Then as our vacation time wound down, we headed back to Billings to catch a flight home on the 21st. We fell in love with the Rocky Mountains and the romance of all the rich history of the land. We met some wonderful people and had amazing mother/daughter bonding time. I feel so lucky to share this experience with my mom.....pneumonia and all.
