An investigation revealed she was killed by a bullet shot from outside her house that pierced the wall of her bedroom.  Andrea and Josh talk about the people who helped investigators bring the killer to justice – his own friends – and reflect on what parents can do to protect their teens from toxic relationships. Later, Andrea shares a podcast-exclusive clip from her interview with two of Emma’s friends. Josh and Keith discuss the choices the teens made as they fell under the spell of their charismatic ringleader, and the local reporter who found himself getting a little too close to the case. They’re also joined by the victim’s sister, Pat Schwebes-Dunbar, who shares how her life has been shaped in the 28 years since her brother’s murder.

Andrea Canning catches up with Keith Morrison and Dateline producer Liz Brown about their episode, “Broken Circle.”  In 2020, a 21-second video filmed secretly at Circle of Hope Girls’ Ranch, a religious reform school in Missouri, went viral on TikTok. Soon after, the local sheriff launched an investigation into possible abuse, and the school closed. Surprisingly, the person who posted the video was none other than Amanda Householder, the daughter of the school's owners. Keith and Liz discuss Amanda’s choice to go against her parents and how she joined forces with former Circle of Hope students to change Missouri laws regulating religious schools.
