    About this Episode

Aston Villa 1 v Manchester United 2. Ten Hag after the game : “It’s a massive win for us,” “We get closer and that’s the aim for today, that was absolutely our target and we did it. The way we did it, I liked it.

“I liked especially the first 20 minutes, after that we were dropping too much. We had our moments in the counter attacks, but at 1-1 we had to fight back.

“It was really high intense, and you could see how many players were fatigued by the end. It was so open and it could have gone two ways. They had the mentality to win this day, especially the substitutes.

“Scott, he’s great. He can score many goals, he’s always coming in positions to score goals. We had some problems, it was too much like a tennis match. Every game we went for goal instead of waiting for the right decisions. With McTominay, he can get in the box and could score goals.

“Our defensive organistaion in the first part was very good, on the ball we were calm. Once we were winning, we changed our mindset. You can do this when the game is going to an end to play out the result. In the first 20 minutes we scored, why not keep going?”

We have more very good penalty takers – podcast #349

Manchester United 2 v Everton 0. Ten Hag : “I was very pleased with the pressing and also the defending of the box. The only thing that could be better is keeping more of the ball, be more calm on the ball, playing more give-and-gos.

“When you have a high press, you can’t go all the time with long balls because you stretch the pitch and we don’t actually want that. But all over, a good performance and good result.

“It was a team performance but especially our back four and our goalkeeper in the back and Casemiro in the front. They have done very well

“The way we defended set-plays was very good, really well organised and focused and everyone did their job. From the second phase, they had some opportunities, but overall, I think we did quite well.”

“They decided on the pitch together. But we have more very good penalty takers in our squad, Bruno is one, Rashy is one, Casemiro and Christian Eriksen as well, plus others.

“That’s very good when you have that in your squad. When you get at such short notice, two different penalty takers makes it harder for the opposition and the goalkeeper.”

Ten Hag on Garnacho : “It’s about him and if he can keep the focus. If he puts the right effort in during a game and during the week, because sometimes for young players it’s difficult because they are inexperienced.

“As a coaching staff, we have a job to do, but he is able to keep this focus and attitude and he will improve from game to game and that’s what we see. We are very pleased with his performance.

“With young players, you always have to tell them. In the week, you win your game and there we have to work very well in training session and meetings, we have to be spot on to get the performance at the weekend.

“I love to work with him, just like the other players in the squad. He is a player who needs a challenge, likes a challenge, he’s very brave and confident and our job is to push him to higher levels.

“But he is doing this. He has a high potential and now we have to get the potential out. You have to work day by day and when you are young, you don’t know what it is to play in a high competitive leave, to perform every third day.

“You need that experience and you have to perform in every training session to get better because there are so many areas for them to improve.”

No hiding place today – podcast #348

Manchester City 3 v Manchester United 1. Ten Hag : “The players gave everything. We had two players on the pitch that were not 100 per cent – Jonny Evans and Marcus Rashford. As a team they gave everything. The performance is very good. Of course we are disappointed with the score.”

“They fought in togetherness, but also the performance is good. On another day we could have won this game. Small margins. It is true. Rashford is through and we can go for a second goal, Garnacho is through and we can go for a second goal but in both moments we got beaten.”

“Absolutely not. We had many injuries and still we had an opportunity.”

“Really small margins. We could have scored a second goal. It is not that big, especially when we have everyone on board, we can be competitive. City is, don’t forget this, in this moment, the best team in the world.”

We were consistent, we are consistent – podcast #347

Nottingham Forest 0 v Manchester United 1. Ten Hag : “It’s the best time to score at the end. On Saturday, we felt a defeat in stoppage time.

“We scored in the right moment. In the second half after five or six minutes, we found the game. Then we were continually in their half and took control of the game. Before that, we had to make some changes. The routines fell away.

“We had chances but we allowed them to create some chances. We should avoid that. Every win is important. We take it 24 hours and then we move on.

“We have fantastic games coming up. This team, what they showed today, that’s great. They have to show it every game. I’ve seen it the last couple of months, not on Saturday.

“We found the way to win. We were consistent. We lost one time in 2024. We are consistent. It’s not so easy when you have the whole backline and we have to shuffle and play players in different positions. I’m very proud we did it.”

Shocking, absolutely shocking – podcast #346

Manchester United 1 v Fulham 2. Ten Hag : “We showed big character by fighting back and then we had opportunities to win the game.

“We let them escape because one player takes the wrong position. Don’t let them escape from a throw-in in the corner.

“Fulham are a good team but we could have pressed better. After we found out how to manage that I think we got better in the game. We had very good chances.

“They had chances as well but, during the first half, I had the idea we got better and better. We had a slow start in the second half and we lost Casemiro, which cost us the goal.

“We had strong belief. We went for the win. That is the character from this team and that is great to see.”

36 seconds for Hojlund to make history – podcast #345

Luton Town 1 v Manchester United 2. Ten Hag : “We recruited him as he’s a strong character. Although he’s 21 he can really perform under stress. That’s what you need as a Manchester United striker.”

“He doesn’t get nervous or lose confidence when he’s not scoring. Once you are in a run, you see it, now he’s scoring and he’s in. That’s how he is now. He has a lot of confidence and I’m sure he’ll score more.”

“I saw the reaction of the referees and I thought the next one they would go off. I didn’t take the risk. We had good replacements in McTominay and Evans. It was the right decision as the performance of those two was very good.”

“Even when he is not touching opponents, he gets booked, Often on the first moment in the game as well. It was crazy today”

“The first booking was so unfair. The second? It could have been given. That’s why we took him off. But it’s difficult to play when you are not even touching an opponent and get booked.

“Now he is back in the team, he gives so much to the team. So much calmness and organisation. We are very happy, because since he is back, the team has lifted its levels.”

    Always remembered – podcast #343

Manchester United 3 v West Ham United 0. Ten Hag after the game : “a personal disaster” “I can’t say but it doesn’t look good,” “There is a bad concern. We have to wait for a few days for the diagnosis.

“We do everything to get the right diagnosis and see what is the damage. He is very sad, very disappointed. We all feel really with him. First of all, it is a personal disaster when it is really bad but also for the team it is really bad because he definitely brings us a lot.”

West Ham boss Moyes : “a huge difference” “He brings much greater calmness on the ball in their build-up play. I am not an expert on Manchester United but I think that makes them look more comfortable.” “I think he was a bit spooked by Martinez.”

“He is making incredible progress,” “He has great abilities. He is the modern midfield player. He can attack and he can defend. He has the intelligence and the physicality, and he is also composed.”

Wolverhampton Wanderers 3 v Manchester United 4. Ten Hag after the game : To be honest, I have mixed feelings,” “For the neutral, for the spectator, it is great to see. But as a manager, when you have dominated for an hour and should be three or four up, the way we concede the goals, we should manage it better, it cannot happen.”

We had to win it twice – podcast #341

We had to win it twice – podcast #341

Newport County 2 v Manchester United 4. Ten Hag after the game : “First 35 minutes it was very comfortable. It should have been 3-0 or 4-0. They created no chance and then out of nothing – I think also it was a foul – they score.

“Then straight after half-time, a mistake, ours, defensive transition not great. Then you have to start again to win this game. Finally we did, so, boys, well done.” “We had to win it twice.”

Bruno Fernandes : “We wanted to win, we got it. But the result wasn’t the perfect one for us. “The first one, it’s a great goal from them. Unbelievable shot. But after we have to be more focused. In the second half, we can’t concede another goal and let them have some belief.

“We have to kill the game. In the first half, we hand chances to make 3-0 but because when you get 2-0 in these kinds of games everyone wants to try to score and get their goal, sometimes we don’t get the best decision for the team. “After we did a great job to close the game.

“Our chance to win a trophy this season is the FA Cup and we have to give everything to get into the final. To make the season look not as bad as it’s been, we have to try to win this trophy.”

Sir Jim Ratcliffe watches what – podcast #340

Manchester United 2 v Tottenham Hotspur 2. Ten Hag after the game : “I think we scored two great goals and we concede two very soft goals,”

“The second goal from a goal kick, we should defend the diagonal, it is the equaliser and it is no good but I have seen some good spells, two goals but also some other chances. You are slightly disappointed when you get the result.”

“We expected Luke Shaw and trained with him but this morning he dropped out not fit enough to start so to change then back and adapt our gameplan was too much so we decided to put Wan-Bissaka”

“I hope they keep going, there is progress, they are coming up with some routines and that is what you need, especially in the front line where a quick decision has to be made and in a split second you need the right decision so you need intuition.”

“I think that counts for every team when your front players are not scoring,” he added. “It goes through the whole team, makes everyone insecure starting with the front players when they are not scoring.”
