Jess Ho on the Celebrity Chef Culture and Being Too Opinionated for TV

    en-auSeptember 07, 2022

    About this Episode

If you’re into the food and wine scene, especially in Melbourne, there’s a good chance you’ve met Jess Ho. Either whilst you're trying to get into a fancy restaurant… or being looked after inside.

Fine dining is a glitzy, showy, Instagram-worthy world, where people love to be seen, but in their new memoir, ‘Raised by Wolves’, Jess lifts the lid on what is often a toxic and messy workplace. Jess says hospitality staff are overworked, underpaid, dealing with rude customers with ridiculous requests and crazy food trends. And then of course, there are the celebrity chefs.

In the memoir, Jess also tells the story of growing up Cantonese in the outer suburbs of Melbourne; bullied, facing ongoing racism and living in a dysfunctional family, who only made peace over food. At 15 Jess won the right to move out on their own, and from there find their own community and forge a career.

Along with running restaurants and owning a wine bar, Jess has been a restaurant brand strategist, a food and drink editor, worked on podcasts for BBC and SBS and as a judge on a TV food show, which Jess says didn’t go to plan - at all.

Dr Ginni Mansberg on How to Save Your Brain

Dr Ginni Mansberg on How to Save Your Brain

There was a time soon after having my first daughter, in the depths of sleep deprivation and baby brain, and I was staying at my brother and sister-in-law’s house, and I really needed a cup of tea. So, I somehow put their electric kettle on a gas top stove … and lit it… almost setting their kitchen on fire. (Sorry Tomo and Anj!) I also recall not being able to recall simple words - like looking at a toaster and thinking, “Yeah…what is that called?” and constantly trying to pay for groceries with a Medicare card.
Right. So, how do we know the difference between cognitive decline and old age… or just a lack of sleep? And what are the simple steps we can take now to save our precious brain.
Well, Dr Ginni Mansberg is a GP, well-known TV host - you’ve probably seen her on Channel 7's Sunrise and The Morning Show, and a best-selling author. And her new book is called Save Your Brain.
Ginni interviewed 22 brain experts around the world to find easy-to-implement strategies to keep our brain functioning at its best. Her book looks at the fact that almost half of all cases of cognitive decline could have been prevented or delayed and that dementia is the leading cause of death in women. Plus, the role anxiety, depression, peri and menopause play.
In true Dr Ginni style, her advice is upbeat, practical and fun. From sleep, to burnout, and the importance of connection and working, Ginni gives us a smorgasbord - an all-you-can-eat buffet - of ways to help save our brain.

And just a reminder, if you ever need it Lifeline's crisis support service is available any time of the day or night on 13 11 14 .

From Love Bombing to Gaslighting and Financial Control, Alex Bunton and Helen McCabe Ask Would You Notice the Red Flags of an Abusive Relationship?

From Love Bombing to Gaslighting and Financial Control, Alex Bunton and Helen McCabe Ask Would You Notice the Red Flags of an Abusive Relationship?

Gaslighting, love bombing, surveillance, financial and coercive control - these are just some of the most common forms of non-physical abuse against women.

And former professional Australian basketballer Alex Bunton knows all about it. Alex met her perpetrator at the height of her career having just won a World Cup silver medal with the Opals - but also at a time she was most vulnerable. She’d had 11 knee surgeries and knew she’d soon have to retire.

She explains how her perpetrator cut her off from loved ones, made her think she was crazy, and drained her bank account on her birthday, while she was pregnant. … a period of deep shame and isolation followed.

Alex, alongside seven other victim-survivors, has joined with Future Women to be part of season 2 of the award-winning podcast series, There’s No Place Like Home, to share their experiences and to raise the question: would you notice the red flags of an abusive relationship? That nagging feeling that something is not quite right.

In today’s chat with Alex and Future Women’s Founder and Managing Director, (and all round media queen), Helen McCabe, we discuss how to spot the red flags; the steps to take to transition towards safety; and also how to help loved ones in need - without them feeling shame or judgment.

Elise Loehnen On The Price We Pay To Be Good

Elise Loehnen is a writer, editor and podcast host. She’s also the author of the newly released and instant New York Times bestseller On Our Best Behavior: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Price Women Pay to Be Good.

Previously, Elise was the chief content officer of goop, where she co-hosted The goop Podcast and she also co-hosted The goop Lab on Netflix.

We start our conversation with Elise talking me through the pivotal moment at the end of 2019, feeling inadequate and exhausted, and contending with consuming anxiety and panic. She realised the way she was living her life simply could not be sustained.

Elise came to recognise that, like so many of us, she was using work - and a ramped up level of busyness - as a tool to numb and to keep her fears at bay.

Through the process of writing this book, and ultimately changing her life, Elise learnt the value of sitting in the discomfort, re-connecting to our inner knowing, prioritising rest, and interrupting our social conditioning.

She shares her simple steps to get really clear on our basic needs, wants and who it is that we want to be, as a person.

Sophie Walker From Australian Birth Stories on Empowering New Mums on Their Journey Through Pregnancy, Labor and Postpartum

Sophie Walker From Australian Birth Stories on Empowering New Mums on Their Journey Through Pregnancy, Labor and Postpartum

Sophie Walker is the creator and host of the hugely successful Australian Birth Stories podcast. The poddy has more than 11 million downloads, and 350 episodes of women sharing their birth experience - and not just the blissful bits.

Sophie’s podcast community has become a sort of virtual birthing village - especially during covid lockdowns. “I wish I had known!” or “Why didn't someone tell me!” are phrases often uttered by women after they give birth for the first time, but Sophie’s aim is to share the wisdom and the stories, so that others can make informed and empowered decisions as they prepare for their new stage of motherhood.

And now, along with the help of brilliant author Jodi Wilson, the pair has written and released The Complete Australian Guide to Pregnancy and Birth.
The book weaves through stories from the podcast but also draws on the expertise of perinatal experts and is medically reviewed by a series of doctors. It covers the first/second/and third trimester > labor and birth > and early post-partum. It also doesn't shy away from challenging topics which can often be glazed over.
Sophie’s created the book she wishes she could’ve had.

Maggie Dent on Raising Our Little Girls to be Healthy, Happy and Heard

Maggie Dent on Raising Our Little Girls to be Healthy, Happy and Heard

There’s a saying often thrown around by parents in the depths of frustration and despair: “What Would Maggie Dent Do?” I’ve asked this question about five times already today!! Including, whilst trying to work out the modern-day rules of Pass the Parcel for our four-year-old’s birthday party. Very intense!
Maggie Dent is known as Australia’s queen of common-sense parenting. She’s anti-guilt, and wants us to lower the bar.
As an author, educator and mum of four boys, Maggie has all the answers when it comes to teaching kids resilience and finding their inner calm.
Maggie’s known for her books on parenting boys - and her ABC podcast Parental As Anything has just won gold at the Australian Podcast Awards - but she’s now released Girlhood: Raising our little girls to be healthy, happy and heard.
The idea for the book came from Maggie trying to work out why girls and women can often seem to lose their sense of power and their voice.
We chat about the ridiculous pressure on women to be the perfect parent, and the unfair pitting of mums against each other.
Plus, the link between self esteem and social media; the importance of grandmas and aunties; and how to stop the conditioning of our girls, which leaves them feeling timid and weak.
Maggie also reflects on her struggles and how writing Girlhood took her on her very own personal journey.

Dr Tracy Dennis-Tiwary on Why Anxiety is Good For Us (Even Though it Feels Bad)

Dr Tracy Dennis-Tiwary on Why Anxiety is Good For Us (Even Though it Feels Bad)

Anxiety is one of the most common and truly unpleasant mental health conditions on the planet.

But can anxiety be useful? And, in fact, even good for us, even though it feels so bad?

This is the belief of today’s guest, Dr Tracy Dennis-Tiwary, who is a leading psychology and neuroscience professor at The City University of New York, an anxiety researcher, and author of the new book ‘Future Tense’.

Dr Tracy wants us to acknowledge the discomfort of anxiety and see it as a tool, rather than something to fear or suppress.

In our chat Dr Tracy talks about her own experience and outlines her radical new framework - which can be used to prep elite performers but also to help support kids and families - to reclaim anxiety as the advantage she says it has evolved to be.

Turia Pitt on Mindset, Motherhood and Why Anyone Can Run

Turia Pitt on Mindset, Motherhood and Why Anyone Can Run

Hello!! When I started this podcast 18 months ago Turia Pitt was at the top of my wish list - she’s an international inspiration - and here we are.

Turia Pitt is grit and hard work. She’s also the queen of mindset and a firm believer that anyone can run.

In 2011, at the age of 24, Turia was a fitness junkie with her dream job as a successful mining engineer, when she was caught in an out-of-control grassfire while competing in a 100km ultramarathon in Western Australia.

It was several hours before medical help arrived and Turia was air-lifted out of the remote desert barely alive, with full thickness burns to 65 percent of her body. Turia lost seven of her fingers and spent over six months undergoing excruciating rehab.

The doctors didn’t expect Turia to survive, never mind walk, run, or be independent again.

But in what is truly a story of triumph over the unimaginable, Turia has gone on to complete two ironman competitions, written best selling books, and become a mum with her partner Michael to two young boys.

Turia has also helped hundreds of women (mostly mums!) learn to run themselves through her program RUN with Turia. Which I’ve done - twice - and truly loved it.

I chat with Turia from her new home up in Far North Queensland, about mindset, motherhood and making new friends as an adult. Turia is really funny and we bond over our love of margaritas and our often eccentric dads who taught us to always “just have a go” and “never give up”.

Turia reminds us about why it’s so important to fill our own cup and put our own needs first, and to be ok with imperfection and being a beginner all over again.

Jodi Wilson on Practising Simplicity (Small Steps and Brave Choices for a Life Less Distracted)

Jodi Wilson on Practising Simplicity (Small Steps and Brave Choices for a Life Less Distracted)

Perhaps it’s coming through a global pandemic, or the rising cost of living, or the passing of the great leader and monarch Queen Elizabeth II.

All of the above and more, probably - so it’s no wonder that it can feel like the world is in a bit of a spin at the moment.

Well this week’s episode will hopefully help. It’s all about taking a deep breath and pausing to find clarity and also joy in the simple things.

It's about practising simplicity. And the easy, small steps you can take and brave choices you can make for a life less distracted.

Jodi Wilson is an author, photographer and mother of four who has not only written the book, but has made her own life-changing decision to flip everything about the way her family lives.

In the midst of the rush and the race of everyday life and saving for a house deposit in a soaring property market, in a suburb she didn't really feel connected to, Jodi felt frustrated and complacent. She felt unmotivated, uninspired and frankly quite angry. She knew something big had to change.

It was a gamble, but Jodi and her husband, sold most of their belongings, spent their hard-earned house deposit on a car and a caravan, and packed up their four kids, to travel Australia.

I love this chat with Jodi - who now happily lives with her family near the beach in Tasmania. There’s no nagging or preaching. Instead Jodi gently reminds us about the value in owning less, reconnecting with nature, respecting those dreams tucked away inside … brewing, and observing tiny moments of joy that prove we don’t need a lot to live well.

    Enjoy.

From BBC's Human Planet to Bear Grylls: Dale Templar on the Secrets to Producing Award-Winning Docos

From BBC's Human Planet to Bear Grylls: Dale Templar on the Secrets to Producing Award-Winning Docos

BBC’s Human Planet is one of the most spectacular documentary series ever made. It took four years to make and was filmed in more than 40 countries - many of the most remote on the globe.

Human Planet uncovers nature’s greatest human stories, and celebrates our ability to adapt and live in virtually every habitat - from scorching deserts to frozen poles and steamy jungles.

The landmark series received eight BAFTA nominations, winning two: for cinematography and editing.

It also won an Emmy and best natural history series at the Panda awards.

And this week’s guest, Dale Templar, was the series producer - the creative brains behind it all.

As a documentary and TV maker, Dale specialises in filming in extreme and often dangerous locations with both humans and wildlife.

Her adventures have taken her everywhere, including Antarctica and the North Pole. (And she has produced and directed a range of stars including British adventurer Bear Grylls.)

This is such a rare chance to hear from one of the greatest doco producers on the planet.
Dale reflects on the lessons she learnt from producing the Human Planet series; the grit and gumption needed to be a world-class producer - especially since forming her own independent production company, One Tribe TV, with her husband; and her experience of working with Bear Grylls and other celebs in the jungles of Costa Rica.
