Modeling Crude Impacts In the Refinery

Benefits of the Bucket Brigade

- Everyone means operators, engineers, maintenance crew, turnaround planners, contractor project teams, inspectors, even procurement.

- Get a bucket, walk the unit (or a specific area within), collect anything that’s not supposed to be there. Bring the buckets to a designated area. Collate or dump what you find. But discuss what you see with your peers.

- Breaks down barriers, builds communication, cleans the unit, and improves operation - all for the price of 1 hour per week and a few buckets.

Control Valve Troubleshooting

The podcast pertains to Sliding Stem Pneumatic Control Valves. When a plant is operational there are numerous things that could cause control valve problems:

- Hunting Valve
- Positioner problems
- Handjack positions

- Packing problems
- Valve internal problems

In summary, a good troubleshooting process looks like this:

1. Visually Inspect for loose fittings, leaks, general condition

2. Place valve in manual and verify stability
3. Return to auto control and monitor
4. Check positioner gauges and feedback arm
5. Analyze DCS setpoint, pv, and output
6. Repeat as needed to get the valve working…..
