Paul Miller & Dawn Daria- Rethinking Your Relationship with “Dropping the Ball”

Paul Miller is an International Speaker and Variety Artist and Dawn Daria is the Chief Education Officer at Flow Circus, the leadership development and training company that they started together in 1999. Together they travel the world, teach kids and adults from Kindergartens to Corporations, and share their “Flopsosophy” through juggling and “skill toys”. In this interview Jason learns about why it’s important to “drop the ball”, to wipe away preconceived notions of success, and to always believe in the idea of “I can from where I am”. This is a fun-filled conversation about mindset, juggling, working together, and how laughter and self-awareness can come from our unavoidable stumbles as humans.

Ben Williams - Enhancing The Student Experience With Sponsorship Programs

"Benjamin McKean Williams is an innovative educator, consultant, and the Assistant Director of New Student Orientation at Georgia State University. In this interview Ben shares creative ways to fund orientation and activities programs and explains the importance in understanding "the foundation" of sponsorship programs. Ben also explains the benefits of building and maintaining relationships with people who say "NO", as they may eventually become your most generous of supporters. In this interview Jason discovers that Ben loves great white sharks, that he sometimes feels like a "hot mess express", and that we sometimes need to "hit bottom to rise up". Ben is a great resource with tons of great advice. At the core of Ben's sponsorship programs is the desire to find a way to "enhance the student experience" by getting "more money to do cool stuff"!

Katy Hurst - Breathing In & Tuning In To Your Body

Katy Hurst, M.Ed., LPC-MHSP, is the former Student Care Coordinator in The Office of The Dean of Students at Vanderbilt University and is now a Licensed Professional Counselor. Katy explains that the ability to feel empathy is something that makes us beautiful as humans. “Empathy” can also open us up to experiencing “collective trauma” which can lead to a “dysregulated nervous system”. Katy also explains that knowing this about ourselves can help us better understand how we feel. You need to “Name It to Tame It”. In this interview Katy helps Jason gain perspective on the way he has reacted to the 2020 tornado that went through his neighborhood. She teaches him helpful breathing techniques and provides helpful resources. Katy met Jason when he was presenting at a poetry festival at her high school in Virginia. Yes, that’s right, Katy’s high school! This is a fun interview as the two of them chat about her high school's “Poetry Festival” and Katy’s journey from singing along with Jason as a 14 year old audience member to becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor.

Justin Camputaro, PhD is the Executive Director of the Husky Union Building at The University of Washington in “Sunny Seattle”. Seth Vander Tuig- Collaborative Events Creates Connection & Community of Colleagues

Seth Vander Tuig- Collaborative Events Creates Connection & Community of Colleagues

In this interview Seth explains how he reached out across the state of Iowa and helped create a "community of colleagues". In short, 18 campuses came together this past school year to coordinate 142 virtual events! And, it was all inspired by a question from his young daughter. "What are your friends doing?" Seth explains how it went from "cold-calls" to friendships and a year of learning and shared experiences. He did not anticipate the level of home-grown professional development that came through the experience of planning with his statewide colleagues. At the heart of it, Seth was seeking to find a way to create a better experience his students at Kirkwood and wound up creating a better experience for thousands of students across the state of Iowa. Let this be the model for your region too. Listen to the conversation and hear Seth's hopes and ideas for the next year and look below for a link to "The Student Life Hub".

Sammie Walker Herrera- Lessons from a "Linkedin Nerd" - Where You Look Is Where You Go!

Sammie Walker Herrera- Lessons from a "Linkedin Nerd" - Where You Look Is Where You Go!

In this interview Sammie shares some great "nuggets of knowledge" about how higher education professionals and everyone can get the best out of Linkedin - from "lazy content" awareness, to asking for recommendations, to "digital role modeling", and building a network of authentic connections. This is a fun interview that starts with Sammie's story of crashing (spilling) her scooter, her broken glasses, and how the experience has inspired her to always carry an extra pair of oversized jeans. We also learn that it's always important to "dress for the crash" and not the ride. But, more importantly, "where you look is where you go"!
