A failure analysis meeting, where 30 top surgeons came together to discuss their biggest catastrophes, was the seed that built the Jacobs Institute for Medical Innovation in Buffalo, New York. The Jacobs Institute (JI) is a multi-disciplinary vascular center that fosters collisions among professionals of different disciplines in order to develop new ideas, technologies and systems. When you think of innovation, Vitamin D is not necessarily the first thing that comes to mind. But meet 92-year-old Dr. Hector DeLuca. He has spent his life researching Vitamin D and he is still finding exciting new information. Dr. DeLuca is an emeritus professor at the University of Wisconsin where he has three buildings named after him for his immense contributions and discoveries. He has made 8 drugs during his lifetime involving vitamin D, has numerous patents, and has been nominated twice for The Nobel. He has recently received his first device patent and is currently studying the effects of UVB light therapy and its healing properties, specifically in MS patients, and also its effect on the immune system.
