    Podcast Summary

    • Finding Peace Through SurrenderInstead of controlling everything, practice surrender and let go of what you cannot change for greater peace of mind.

Surrender is an important concept for mental health. It means making peace with things we cannot change or control, rather than resisting and suffering as a result. The Oxford dictionary defines surrender as stopping resistance to an enemy or opponent, but we can expand that definition to include anything that feels like a powerful influence in our lives. Many of our daily struggles and fears can seem insignificant with some distance, and surrendering can help us find greater peace of mind. So, instead of trying to control everything, consider practicing surrender and letting go of what you cannot change. Remember, most things won't matter in the long run. As Idina Menzel sang in "Let It Go," "It's funny how some distance makes everything seem small, and the fears that once controlled me can't get to me at all."

    • Accepting the things we can't controlSurrender to unchangeable situations, focus on what's within our control, and avoid draining energy on the uncontrollable

We cannot control everything in life, and it's important to accept and surrender to the things that are beyond our influence. The speaker shares an example of having to take her car to the dealership for repairs, encountering unexpected roadworks, and being stuck in traffic for an extended period. Despite her frustration, she acknowledges that she had no control over the situation and could either make it a miserable experience or find ways to make the most of it. Surrender, as the speaker explains, doesn't mean giving in, but rather choosing where to focus our energy. By fighting against things we cannot change, we risk wearing ourselves out and taking our focus away from the things we can influence. Surrendering allows us to accept reality and move forward, rather than staying stuck in resistance.

    • Accepting the things we can't controlAcceptance can lead to inner peace, reduce stress, open new possibilities, and promote self-care and spiritual growth.

Accepting the things in life that are out of our control can lead to inner peace and new possibilities. Surrendering to the present moment and letting go of the need to control everything can help reduce stress and anxiety, and open us up to new solutions and ideas. It's important to remember that even when we can't change a situation, we can still influence how we react to it and shape our future through the choices we make today. Surrendering can also be a form of self-care and spiritual growth, helping us to trust in ourselves and the wider world, and aligning us with our beliefs or values. Ultimately, surrendering allows us to acknowledge that we are part of something bigger than ourselves and that things will work out in their own way and time. So, when faced with something that feels out of control, focus on managing your emotional reaction, accepting the situation, and taking positive steps forward.

    • Accept what you can't controlRecognize what's within your control, accept it, and avoid unnecessary emotional turmoil by focusing on choices and what you can control.

Surrendering doesn't mean giving up, but rather recognizing what is within your control and accepting it, while also being mindful of the cost of resistance. By thinking before you act and focusing on what you can control, you can make smarter decisions and avoid unnecessary emotional turmoil. Remember, emotions are important, but when they run your life, chaos ensues. Surrender is about maturity and acceptance, and it leads to a more positive outlook on life. It's important to show yourself kindness and compassion during this process, as resistance can lead to toxic emotions like resentment and anger. In the end, our choices determine our outcomes, so choose wisely and focus on the things you can control.

    • Embrace reality and take actionFocus on what you can control, accept reality without judgment, and channel energy effectively for growth and improvement

Focusing on what you can control and taking action is essential for growth and improvement, rather than getting stuck in unchangeable situations. Surrender is about accepting reality while also taking action, not giving up. It's crucial to pick battles wisely and focus on what matters most to you. Additionally, practicing acceptance without judgment or resistance can help you let go of the need to control and focus on the present moment, where change can occur. Remember, the past is unchangeable, and the future is uncertain, so focusing on the present is the only way to make a difference. Surrender doesn't mean giving up, but rather channeling your energy and attention effectively.

    • Effective ways to manage frustration and resistanceBe present, express thoughts, seek solutions, use affirmations, and practice self-compassion to manage frustration and resistance, improving overall well-being

Being present, expressing your thoughts and feelings, seeking solutions, using affirmations, and practicing self-compassion are all effective ways to help manage frustration and resistance. Choosing to be present allows you to focus on the current moment and let go of distractions. Writing out your thoughts and feelings is a way to release energy and express yourself, without worrying about readability or keeping it. Looking for solutions instead of problems primes your mind for solution-based thinking, and affirmations can help reinforce positive beliefs and behaviors. Lastly, practicing self-compassion is important in being kind to yourself during difficult times. These practices can help improve your overall well-being and enable you to better handle challenges.

    • Embrace the present moment and let go of resistancePractice self-awareness, forgiveness, and seek support to let go of expectations and move forward in life. Focus on controlling yourself and your actions, and find peace in the unknown.

Letting go and moving forward in life can be a challenging process, but it's a healthy and necessary one. Being self-aware and focused on personal growth are important first steps. Letting go of expectations, practicing forgiveness, and seeking support can help make the process smoother. Remember, you can't control others or the world around you, but you can control how you react and respond. It's essential to accept the reality of what is and focus on what you can control: yourself and your actions. The choice to surrender and let go of resistance can lead to greater peace of mind. As the quote goes, "whatever comes, let it come." It's a reminder to embrace the present moment and find peace in the unknown.

    238: Learning to let go

Do you know how to let go of the past? What’s involved in letting go, and how can you let go of the past so you can start moving forward in life?

A big part of personal growth and self improvement is learning how to stop repeating the past (since repeating the past usually comes with a jumbo-sized dose of repeating past mistakes!), so this week in the Let’s Talk About Mental Health podcast I’m exploring why you need to learn how to let go and I’m sharing simple techniques for letting go that actually work (including my all-time favourite letting go technique!).

Ready to learn how to start letting go of the past? Then, let’s talk! 😃

Finding who we really are is often described as a journey and for Alisoun Mackenzie the voyage of discovery quite literally began when she was backpacking around the world, yet not in the way you might expect.

Alisoun is on a mission to help women enjoy a happier, more meaningful life that lights up their heart and makes a difference in a way that they are proud of. Her own personal search for meaning started with getting off a train.

    The train of expectation.

Understanding, accepting and owning her mission has repeatedly required Alisoun to let go of expectation: both her own expectations of herself and the expectations of others.

In this inspirational yet intimate conversation, meaningful life guide, Alisoun Mackenzie, describes how letting go and surrendering to the process of life has inspired and created incredible opportunities to serve, undertaking humanitarian work with young genocide survivors in Rwanda, and leading teams of women who sponsor earthquake-resistant schools made of recycled plastic in Asia.

Having explored her own quest for meaning, Alisoun now helps other women to live a more meaningful life that leaves a legacy.

This episode is for anyone who is seeking more meaning in life and wants to learn more about living a life that is aligned to their personal truth.

    017: Surrender the Final Frontier

    017: Surrender the Final Frontier
Most of us live our lives believing and acting as though we are in control.  We become angry and disillusioned when life does not go according to our plan.   We often fight the flow of our life, not accepting reality as it is, and it hurts. Robin explains that faith and surrender go hand in hand and they are important tools, especially when going through very difficult times in our life.   What if we can surrender to the process of life and allow, rather than become resentful and angry? Robin explains and gives us examples of how we actually become stronger and more in touch with our hearts and soul if we allow ourselves to surrender.   It doesn’t mean we live in passivity, but we are happier and in peace when we recognize the power of surrender, touching our divinity along the way.
