#47 Discipline trumps motivation but what trumps discipline?

Motivation sucks for reliably getting stuff done. If we always wait until we're motivated to do stuff, we'll never get anywhere.
Discipline trumps motivation any day of the week.
But... there's something better than discipline.

#46 The Power of a big Vision. Designing your life in 2024. Beyond goal setting.

Have you got a vision for your life? If you look into the future, what do you want to have? What do you want to do? What do you want to be? Who will be there with you? If you havenā€™t done this yet, I would love to encourage you to spend some time thinking and dreaming and writing down what you would like your life to be like in 20 years. 20 years is a pretty long time. Itā€™s as long as youā€™ll need to achieve pretty much anything youā€™d like to achieve. I said it last week, even if you don't know how you're going to get there, at least knowing where you want to get to, means you're not either wandering around aimlessly or worse still, not going anywhere.

Today we dive into building a massive vision for your life, which can serve as your optimisation cue when faced with choices in life.

A master in the art of living draws no sharp distinction between his work and his play; his labour and his leisure; his mind and his body; his education and his recreation. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence through whatever he is doing, and leaves others to determine whether he is working or playing. To himself, he always appears to be doing both.

I love this quote. I've changed my mind on some things and retiring early is one of them. I actually want to build a life that I don't want to retire from. I want to become a Master in the Art of Living. Let's unpack what that means.

Itā€™s one of my favourite times of year. That time between Christmas and New Year, when all the excitement of Christmas is over but Iā€™m not working and Iā€™m able to spend some relaxing time with my family and friends and also to reflect back on the past year and look forward to and plan my goals for the next year.Ā

And the more I read about it, the more I realise (a) ā€œman setting goals is ridiculously importantā€. And (b) ā€œman, most people (including me), donā€™t give anywhere near enough attention to goal-setting as we should".

I want to give you three frameworks for you to use to make 2024 a year where you make meaningful progress towards living Life to the Full.

#43 What does Frankincense mean to you? Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas Eve you wonderful podcast listeners. Thank you so much for your ears and attention this year. I wanted to jump on the microphone once more before Christmas to bring a reflection on Frankincense that I shared at church a few years ago. Christmas is a wonderful time to slow down and to meditate on what we're celebrating. I had no idea what Frankincense was until I wrote this meditation. I hope you enjoy and learn something new!

    Merry Christmas!

A crazy idea occurred to me the other day when I was listening to Joshua Sheats on the Radical Personal Finance podcast, one of my favourite podcasts, why don't I share this so that more people can hear it!
This is chapter 5 of the audiobook I'm working on at the moment. It's The Richest Man in Babylon. If you haven't listened to chapter 1 yet then head back to episode 24 before you pick up on this one!
It's a parable set in ancient Babylon which has immense profound wisdom that is still applicable today about building streams of income and looking after our finances.Ā

Head over to find me on Instagram @dafyddmorse and @lifetothefullpodcast and let me know if you're enjoying the audiobook!

I went a bit rouge last time and broke out of season 3 to bring you an emergency episode "Your emergency fund is not for emergencies. Ok, so what's it for?"
Today, we're back in season 3 for a deep dive into nutrition. We'll look at

    - What the key macro and micro nutrients we eat do.
    - Why ultra processed food is making us sick and stupid.
    - The four types of food we should definitely be eating.
    - Why we should grow and forage more of our own food.
    - How to still eat healthily when you want to smash a litre of Ben and Jerry's.
and - What making pasta from scratch means to me.Ā

#40 Your emergency fund is NOT for emergencies. OK, then what is it for?

Your emergency fund is not for emergencies! That's right. You heard me. Your emergency fund is not for emergencies.Ā

First things first, let's get everyone up to speed on what an emergency fund is. Then we'll get to what the best use of an emergency fund is.Ā

Ā An emergency fund is 3-6 months living expenses set aside in an easy access account which is not your current account (you might be tempted to spend it!) so that you have some money ready for any of life's emergencies that will inevitably come up.

Common emergencies that people site are a new boiler, car repairs or maybe you lose your job and you need to pay your mortgage or rent and bills and buy food whilst you get yourself back on your feet.Ā

These are all great reasons for having an EF. It's much better than not having one but there's a better use for it.Ā

That's what I'm here to propose in today's episode. If you are feeling stuck in a situation you can't change then listen up to today's episode!

#39 SLEEP EXPERT Interview. Dr Caroline Horton from DrEAMSLab. What happens when we sleep? Why should we prioritise sleep and why we need to stop using the word Sleep Hygiene!

I'm super pumped for this episode. I grabbed the opportunity to tap into the knowledge and wisdom that Dr Caroline Horton has amassed. Caroline is a chartered psychologist, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a member of several academic associations. She is a reader in psychology at Bishop Grosseteste University BGU and formerly led the PhD programme there. She is now the director of Dreams Lab, based at BGU in Lincoln, UK, which undertakes projects that share the common goal of exploring sleep-related cognition.Ā

Ā She is also the co-director of The Lincoln Sleep Research Centre.Ā

Ā Before joining BGU, Caroline obtained her undergraduate and Master's degrees in Psychology from the University of Durham, her PhD from the Institute of Psychological Sciences, University of Leeds and a PGCHE from Leeds Metropolitan University. Caroline has taught at the Universities of Durham and Leeds as well as the Open University, and predominantly at Leeds Metropolitan University as a Lecturer then Senior Lecturer. Her research interests principally span the fields of sleep, dreaming, and memory, and the relationships between those concepts.

Ā In today's episode, we tackle such questions as how much should I sleep? What happens when we sleep? How does our sleep affect our physical and mental health? How cool is lucid dreaming? What is sleep hygiene and how should we make the most of our sleep time?
