    About this Episode

For the last instalment in the Dubai Files, Felix sits down with Manuel Emch, the creative mind behind the resurgence of Louis Erard, which has evolved over the last few years from a middle-of-the-road value proposition into a powerhouse of collaboration. Enlisting help from people like Alain Silberstein and Konstantin Chaykin has seen Louis Erard become one of the most interesting names in watchmaking at the moment. All thanks to the Emch, a man with a reputation for putting out fires. Felix finds out about Emch, his approach to watches and what might happen to Louis Erard when collabs go out of favour. Before that, Andy and Felix chat about their trip to Sydney for an evening with Kennedy, and the joys of soapbox racers.

Ming Thein, founder of Horologer Ming, talks design and lightweight watches

Ming Thein, founder of Horologer Ming, talks design and lightweight watches

The Dubai Files keep on giving, as this week we’ve got Felix’s chat with Ming Thein, the self-described Supreme Overlord of Horologer Ming, one of the most exciting and prolific young watch brands, who have racked up 62 references in only six years. Felix and Ming spend a lot of time chatting about the incredible new Ming LW.01, which Ming believes is the lightest mechanical watch ever made, coming in at 8.8 grams for the manual and 10.8 grams for the automatic. Beyond this incredible feat, they also discuss the joys and challenges of being a young, nimble watch brand in this day and age.

Closer to home, the big news is that Andy will be jetting off to his first-ever Watches & Wonders and is currently knee-deep in scheduling shenanigans. If you have any Geneva tips, let us know!

February News — LVMH Watch Week, Piaget Hype and Taylor Swift

February News — LVMH Watch Week, Piaget Hype and Taylor Swift

LVMH Watch Week, which was recently held in Miami, marks the start fo the flood of new releases for the year, and for our first news episode, we fly through some of the highlights from TAG Heuer, Hublot, Bulgari and Zenith. Of course, LVMH doesn’t have a monopoly on the news, and Piaget’s hype-y new Polo 79 is bringing u80s realness back to the wrist. But all these new releases pale compared to the biggest news story of the last few months, about a woman so cool she doesn’t even need to wear watches on her wrists. Yes, the one and only Taylor Swift ruffled feathers by wearing a custom choker with a Concord watch front and centre. We have thoughts. Beyond that, the big news in OT: land is that we’re getting into video, so if you’ve ever wanted to see the faces we make while recording your favourite watch pod, you’re in luck.

Verne Ho (@WatchStudies) on his Cartier passion

This week, Andy flies solo, chatting to Verne Ho, the man behind Watch Studies, which bills itself as the only dedicated tool and resource for watch photography, helping watch lovers to tell better stories about the watches they love. Verne is an experienced photographer and creative director, and we find out how he’s gone from watch-adjacent to full-blown nerd.

Before that, Felix and Andy talk a bit about their 2024 plans, and why British spy drama is the best spy drama.

Rolf Studer (Oris) on building a sustainable watch brand

Rolf Studer (Oris) on building a sustainable watch brand

As Andy and Felix enjoy their summer down under, the Dubai Files continues to deliver. This week Felix chats to Oris Co-CEO Rolf Studer, and it's not your average watch exec interview. Typically, it's a challenge to get a CEO to talk about anything but the watches, but in our chat with Studer, we ended up talking far more about the Enlightenment and philosophy (and how it relates to the business of watches) than is usual. Of course, we did manage to squeeze in some chat about the glorious Propilot X Laser along the way. Before that, please enjoy some light banter about holiday plans and the joys of British crime dramas.

End of year wrap: Our highlights of 2023

End of year wrap: Our highlights of 2023

In the last episode of 2023, Andy and Felix — full of festive cheer — look back on the highs and lows of 2023. From the biggest surprise of the year to the trend they wish would go away and the watch they’d actually spend their own hard-earned cash on, Felix and Andy mostly agree on the year that was, and in the end, they rated 2023 a solid 6.5ish out of 10.

Davide Cerrato (Bremont) on his plans for the British brand

Davide Cerrato (Bremont) on his plans for the British brand

Felix caught up with the effervescent Davide Cerrato at Dubai Watch Week, who’s starting to feel comfortable in the top job at Bremont after six months. Felix and Davide chat about what he’s been up to, but most importantly, what he’s got planned for the next evolution of Bremont. Unfortunately, it sounds like we’ll have to wait until Watches & Wonders 2024 to see just what he’s been cooking up, but if the idea of a Bremont Field Watch tickles your fancy, stay tuned. Before the Bremont shenanigans, Andy and Felix chat about Universal Geneve, and gift each other some hypothetical Zodiac stocking stuffers. It’s festive and fantastic!

Jason Heaton (The Grey NATO) on his second novel, Sweetwater

Jason Heaton (The Grey NATO) on his second novel, Sweetwater

Jason Heaton, everyone’s favourite diving watch guy, is back! Last time we had the pleasure of Heaton’s dulcet tones in our ears, he was talking about his debut novel Depth Charge. Now he’s back with a brand new novel: Sweetwater. Sweetwater sees the return of Tusker, the marine archaeologist, but now the action is a bit closer to home: the icy waters of Lake Superior. What hasn’t changed, though, is Heaton’s brisk adventure thriller tone, which sees the action coming on thick and fast, with the political intrigue as murky as the depths. We don’t dive into too many spoilers with Jason, but we do find out how this novel is different to his first, just how much of Tusker is recognisably Jason, and more. Of course, we also chat about the rest of Jason’s life, from dipping his toes back into watches and how the impossibly cool podcast, The Grey NATO, is going from strength to strength. And before all that, we chat about why Zodiac nails the creative use of colour.

Jean-Claude Biver at Dubai Watch Week, and more Zodiac

Jean-Claude Biver at Dubai Watch Week, and more Zodiac

Jean-Claude Biver is one of the most important individuals in modern watchmaking, a man with a legendary CV and a long legacy. These days, though, it’s his own name on the dial, and when Felix had a surprise interview at Dubai Watch Week, it was finding out how Biver senior has transitioned from running mega watch groups to working with a small family business. Of course, when you get the chance to chat with someone who’s done it all, you ask the big questions about the future of the watch industry and whether or not it’s selfish to put your own name on the dial.

But before all this, we get the second instalment of our chat with Zodiac’s Mike Pearson and find out why the brand is focussing on its core.

Alan 'Hammer' Bloore on selling his collection and getting his affairs in order

Alan 'Hammer' Bloore on selling his collection and getting his affairs in order

Alan Bloore — better known as Hammer — is a legend in the world of collecting, particularly when it comes to Panerai. He’s been collecting watches since the 1980s, and, in a few days, Hammer’s watch collection is going under the hammer at Sotheby’s New York. Hammer is selling because, in his own words, “it’s time to get my affairs in order.”

We talk about Hammer’s lifelong love of watches, Panerai and the Paneristi forum, as a maritime accident that resulted in a spinal cord injury and the first of many doctors asking, ‘are your affairs in order’. Nearly 20 years later, Hammer has lived an incredible second life, a life in which watches — and the watch community — played a central role. Hammer talks about what watches mean for him, and the connections he’s made based on these fascinating machines. In 2019, he had another accident, and doctors once again started to ask if his affairs were in order. For Hammer, a large part of his life’s affairs are his watches, and with this sale, he can say that yes, they are.

Before chatting to Hammer, we talk to Mike Pearson, Zodiac’s International Director of Brand Development, about the brand’s history, and how they’re interpreting it today
