Happy Birthday to Me: Best Advice of Season 2 (so far)

In this special episode (I day after my birthday), I briefly discuss some of the best advice from Season Two.

From standing up for yourself to not getting caught in the loop of self-sabotage to realizing how overrated 'loyalty' is to living at the intersection of cost and value, I provide some (hopefully thoughtful) life advice that anyone can use.

See you next week with a traditional episode.

Don't Let Anyone Take Away Your Happiness!

Don't Let Anyone Take Away Your Happiness!

This week, I discuss the story of my high school basketball experience and how it led to people taking away my happiness. Dealing with bullies is never easy, but learning how to do it can you tremendously in life.

For the lesson, it's all about how sometimes life is not fair. People are not fair. How we learn how to deal with  that will help us in life.
If you believe that you are on the right path, don't let anyone get in your way.

For the advice, it boils down to this: don't let anyone take away your happiness.

As a Parent, You Are The Toy

As a Parent, You Are The Toy

In this week’s episode I talk about how creating a safe space for our children is critical for them to be able to decompress and be themselves. Often times, our kids are holding it together and when they get in our orbit, they just need to release and relax. Be aware of your frustrations with their behavior and recognize when they just need to blow off some steam.

For the lesson, I realized that as parents, we are the toy. And, we are the toy because we make our children feel safe because we are familiar and comforting. So, the next time our kids ‘will you play with me’, they are really saying ‘I feel safe with you and right now I need that feeling of safety’.

Also, what is our relationship to our ‘releases’? I often have an unbalanced relationship with my decompression as I run to food or other outlets to ‘dive in’ and escape the reality of my day. By doing that, am I also not helping create a positive space for my wife and daughter to be able to decompress?

The advice I would give my daughter when she is older is for her to understand the relationship she has with her releases. There is nothing wrong with using exercise, cooking, watching a movie, etc. to unwind after a long day or week, but understanding how you use those things can help inform how you are growing as a person.

For the Just the Tip, I talk about why I always buy pesto instead of making it. It all boils down to outsourcing the stuff you don’t want to do.

And, for the Whisper In, @milklesspodcast is where you want to be. Matt and Max are funny, insightful and spot on with parenting real talk.

Outside of Your Scope: When My Father Bought a Sports Flooring Company

Outside of Your Scope: When My Father Bought a Sports Flooring Company

What a story today! My dad, an attorney in a small town in Michigan, decided to buy a sports flooring company in Boston? Yeah, I don't even know what to say.

Starting a business, buying a business, taking your career or life in a different direction CAN be great. However, beyond just 'knowing your why', it is critical to actually KNOW you why - the real, deep down, self motivating reason why. Is it pure? Are you sure?

Want some advice? How about meet yourself where you are instead of where you think you should be. Too often, we are reaching for things that are attainable, but not just yet. Or, we reach for things with poor intention and wrong intention. Be honest with yourself, reach for things for the right reason(s) to give yourself the best possible future.

Starting a Fraternity: If You Don't Like Your Current Situation, Create a New One.

Starting a Fraternity: If You Don't Like Your Current Situation, Create a New One.

In this week's episode I discuss how I was nearly set to join a fraternity that I wasn't really loving..until I stopped and realized that I had the choice to do my own thing. Oh, and I was dressed like Mr. Potato Head.

In this clip, the 'lesson' I learned from starting a frat was to NOT compromise principles in order to fit in or belong. I was 'this close' to joining a frat that I was not really a fan of, and in doing so, would have compromised things I held to be true, all because I wanted to fit in.

With the advice clip, I talk about how instead of going along with the options I was given, I helped create a new option. This advice can relate to many aspects of our lives.

Being Good at 'X' Doesn't Mean You'll Be Good At 'Y'.

Being Good at 'X' Doesn't Mean You'll Be Good At 'Y'.

Today, I discuss how I was forced into a job I wasn't ready for. Knowing I wasn't ready for the role and didn't have the right skill set didn't stop my boss from pushing me into the role.

Also, how the finding of a job is all about fit. The skill set you have needs to match the one job requires. Too often companies equate success in one job with success in another, which doesn't always line up.

The advice… it's all about money....or leadership...or fit...what to focus on when looking at a new job/career. Money is the obvious answer, but just like we see in sports, it is often the leading cause of the wrong decision.
