Making Your Cover Art Attractive, Effective, and an Attention Grabber.
Welcome to The Nothing But Podcasts Podcast powered by Nexm Creative. I am your host Paul “the producer” Rogers and today we are discussing making your cover art attractive, effective, and an attention grabber.
Before choosing cover art for your podcast it’s a must to figure out your podcasts visual identity. What is your podcast all about and what do you want your listeners to get from it. Your cover art should be visually pleasing while accurately representing your podcasts overall message. Ask yourself these questions:
- How would you describe your podcast? Make a list of keywords.
- Try defining your podcast in 1–2 sentences in order to really hone in on your idea. Think elevator pitch on this one.
- Who’s your target audience?
- What makes your podcast special and different from others?
- What other podcasts inspire you, and what do you like about their cover art?
When creating your cover art make sure you use high resolution photos. The last thing you want is the first thing people see to be blurry. The best resolutions to ensure that it looks great and clear on all platforms is 1080 x 1080. Honestly, I would say make your cover art 3000 x 3000 to prevent the possibility of incompatibility.
Less is more when designing your podcast cover art. Having too many colors, images, or fonts can be distracting or even deter listeners from your brand. Try to limit yourself to no more than 2 fonts for your cover art.
Colors play a big role in effectiveness of your cover art. Different colors evoke different psychological responses. It’s great to use colors that really compliment each other and evoke the feelings that you want your listeners to feel when viewing your podcast cover art. Now of course there are exceptions to the rules so feel free to take creative liberties on this front. It’s just something to think about when creating.
Make sure that the text you use is legible on all devices, big or small. Using tiny fonts on your cover art can make it very difficult to make out on smaller devices or mobile phones. Lastly, keep your text limited to the name of your podcast.
Use simple illustrations and patterns. Too many patterns or creative elements can make their meaning get lost and “muddy” up the message of your cover art.
When using photography, use photos of clear subjects on simple backgrounds. Using photos that are too busy can make it hard for your text to be legible and easy to read for your listeners.
Another tip is to avoid using overused images such as microphones, headphones, etc.
Make sure that your cover art is consistent and aligned with your brand. Think Coca Cola or Nike. Their imagery is always consistent to their brand to reduce confusion on what their message is.
Don’t be afraid to repurpose your cover art in marketing strategies. Business cards, social media pictures, flyers, audio teasers, and more. Work smarter not harder is the name of this game.
Remember, your cover art is the first thing your listeners see when browsing podcasts. Make it attractive, effective, and make it align with the idea or message of your podcast.
