What is normalized deviance? It's likely something that you have witnessed before and after listening, we hope you'll begin to recognize it. As trainees, we are in a unique position to identify normalized deviance. We have not participated in the system long enough for "deviant" behavior to feel normal. That feeling you get when you look around the room and exchange glances with other members of the team, yet no one speaks up? And sometimes, you might even be the only one looking around the room? That is likely the result of normalized deviance.

On this episode of the UnsCripted Medicine Podcast, we dive into the topic of normalized deviance and its presence in medicine and medical training.  Hosts Molly Carroll and Andrew Zahn sit down with Dr. Eric Warm, MD to discuss the topic.

What makes a diagnosis? What does a diagnosis even mean? Andrew is joined by Dr. Bruce Cohen, MD, PhD, director of the program for Neuropsychiatric Research at McLean Hospital and Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, about how the diagnostic terms we use can sometimes be harmful to our patients and may not even effectively communicate what is causing their symptoms. In this episode, Andrew is joined by Dr. Alison Sheets, to talk about how she has meshed her career in medicine with her passion for climbing and the outdoors. In addition to being an emergency medicine physician, she is also the medical director of Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, an all volunteer organization that is one of the oldest and most experienced search and rescue organizations in the country. Urban Health Project (UHP) is a student-run non-profit organization formed by UCCOM students in 1986 with the goal of improving community-based healthcare and providing medical students with meaningful service-learning opportunities. Rory, Mackenzie, and Claire talk about their experiences this summer being matched up with community partners, opportunities for supporting and working with UHP, and how the mission of UHP has shaped them as future physicians.
