Mojo CEO Vinit Bharara on building a stock market to bet on athletes | E1566

    en-usSeptember 21, 2022

    Podcast Summary

    • Starting a Successful Business: Passion and OpportunitiesPursue your passions and be open to opportunities, as they may lead to remarkable achievements

Starting a successful business involves passion, innovation, and the right opportunities. Vinnie Barara, the older brother of Preet Bharara, who gained fame as the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, recently launched Mojo, a stock market platform for betting on athletes. They've already raised $100 million and are revolutionizing the future of wagering, gambling, and investing. Vinnie shared insights on building a stock market from scratch and handling liquidity during an interview on This Week in Startups. Before Mojo, Vinnie and Preet collaborated on the podcast "Stay Tuned with Preet," which Vinnie produced. They discussed the possibility of turning it into a media company, and when Vinnie left Amazon, they finally made it happen. However, they eventually sold it to Jim Banker in 2021. The experience of starting and selling a podcast company taught Vinnie valuable lessons and prepared him for the success of Mojo. Passion, as shown by Preet's media career, and the right opportunity, like the Supreme Court legislation allowing sports betting, played significant roles in the success of both Stay Tuned with Preet and Mojo. As a takeaway, it's essential to pursue your passions and be open to opportunities, as they may lead to remarkable achievements.

    • Securing a valuable domain name for Cafe MediaSecuring a memorable and easy-to-remember domain name is crucial for building a successful brand. Cafe Media paid $240,000 for cafe.com to establish credibility and professionalism.

The importance of a memorable and easy-to-remember domain name for a company cannot be overstated. This was a key factor for the founders of Cafe Media, who were determined to create a strong brand and make it easily recognizable. After getting fired from his previous job, one of the founders decided to start a podcast, and they chose to go independent and create their own media company, Cafe Studios, in order to retain full ownership and control. They were able to secure the valuable domain name cafe.com for $240,000, and this helped establish the company's credibility and professionalism. The founders had a history of acquiring good domain names, and they believed that having a memorable and easy-to-spell domain name was essential for building a successful brand. This principle had served them well in the past, and it continued to be a guiding principle for Cafe Media.

    • The Importance of Memorable Domain Names for Business SuccessA memorable domain name contributes to building credibility and reducing cynicism, especially for new businesses. Owning a unique and scarce domain name can significantly impact a company's success.

Having a memorable and legit domain name is crucial for building credibility and reducing cynicism, especially for new businesses. The speaker shares examples of how owning Calm.com and Diapers.com significantly contributed to their companies' success. Although some may argue that domain extensions like .io or .code are sufficient, the speaker emphasizes that the value lies in the owner and seller's agreement on the scarcity and memorability of the domain name. The speaker also mentions their personal fondness for subdomains like founder.university and angel.university. The conversation also touched upon their shared love for music, specifically Bruce Springsteen and Mark Knopfler, and how their upbringing in the Northeast influenced their musical tastes.

    • Discovering the Influences of Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Dire StraitsExplore music inspired by legendary artists, use Brave browser for online privacy, and value brotherly business partnerships.

The influences of artists like Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Dire Straits on Mark Knopfler are evident in his music, particularly in the long 10-minute songs they all became known for. The user's musical journey led them to discover these artists, and they highly recommend Brave, a privacy-focused browser that shields users from ads and trackers, for those concerned about online privacy. The user also shared their positive experience of working with their brother in business for four years without any major disagreements or conflicts. Despite their brother's reluctance to do video podcasts, they managed to work together harmoniously, with the talent taking precedence over any potential disagreements.

    • A new platform for sports fans to invest in athletes' careersFans can now invest in athletes' careers with real money, earning potential payouts based on their statistics, and buy/sell stocks at any time.

Mojo.com is a new company that operates as a sports stock market, allowing everyday fans to invest in the careers of athletes using real money, with the potential for payouts based on the athlete's statistics at the end of their career. This market provides both the intrinsic value of owning a stock with a guaranteed payout, as well as the liquidity for fans to buy and sell stocks at any time. The company is starting with football players in the NFL, and the value of the stocks is not based on traditional scarcity but rather on the athlete's career statistics.

    • Navigating the Complex Regulatory Landscape for Online Sports WageringCompany takes transaction fee on trades in sports wagering market, but legality is complex due to varying state regulations. Founders tried sports trading cards before, but regulatory environment wasn't favorable. Now pursuing business model under online wagering laws, going state by state for approval. Debuted in NJ app store, plans to expand.

The company's business model revolves around taking a transaction fee on every trade that occurs on their platform in the sports wagering market. However, the legality of this business model is a complex issue, as it involves wagering and regulatory frameworks that vary from state to state. The company's founders had previously attempted to create a similar business model using sports trading cards, but the regulatory landscape was not favorable at the time. However, with recent changes in the regulatory environment, the company is now able to pursue this business model under online wagering laws, although it means going state by state to secure regulatory approval. The company has chosen to petition the New Jersey Division of Gaming to regulate their product, and they have recently debuted in the app store in New Jersey, with plans to expand to other states. Overall, the company's success will depend on their ability to navigate the complex regulatory landscape and secure regulatory approval in each state.

    • Maximize savings with R&D tax creditsFounders can save up to $250,000 through R&D tax credits, but they must apply before the October 17th deadline to claim the credits in the current year.

Founders can save significant amounts of money through R&D tax credits, with up to $250,000 available if their business qualifies. NeoTax makes the process easy and risk-free, with a quick application and integration into most accounting and payroll software. These credits do not roll over from year to year, so it's essential to claim them before the October 17th deadline. Thrive Capital, a leading venture capital firm, is one of many investors that have recognized the value of these tax credits, having secured over $75 million in funding for a company they invested in last year. Despite any potential political connections or differences, business transactions with investors like Thrive are focused solely on their expertise and ability to provide valuable resources for growing companies.

    • Creating an authentic investment experience in a prediction marketThis new prediction market aims to bring real money and real positions, making it as close to a real stock market as possible, potentially attracting sports teams and GMs.

The success of a prediction market, especially one based on real money, depends on its authenticity and resemblance to a real stock market. Previous attempts, such as Hollywood Stock Exchange and sports card markets, while popular, had issues with unclear asset value or being based on funny money. The creators of this new platform aim to make it as close to a real stock market as possible, allowing users to deposit real money and take real positions in players, creating an authentic investment experience. This approach could potentially attract the attention of sports teams and GMs, who value data-driven decision making and the wisdom of crowds. However, it's important to note that while the potential for suboptimal decisions is reduced with real money on the line, there are still challenges to navigate, such as market manipulation and ensuring accurate player valuations.

    • Sports betting market provides valuable data for sports teamsSports betting market data can inform team decisions on contracts and roster management, and help identify potential risks through short positions on underperforming players.

The sports betting market, which includes the ability to go long and short on player performances, can provide valuable data points for sports teams and decision-makers. The market's projections are based on the latest expectations for a player's career, taking into account factors like injuries and games played. By analyzing this data, teams can make informed decisions on contracts and roster management. Additionally, the market's ability to go short on a player, or take the under, can help identify potential risks and mitigate them. The career arc of a player is a great equalizer in performance analysis, as it's challenging to find someone with long-term success who isn't a top performer. This data can help teams make more informed decisions and improve their overall performance.

    • Data and Sports: Ethical and Regulatory ChallengesAccess to data in sports can benefit fans and teams, but raises ethical and regulatory concerns. Compliance and transparency are crucial in the industry.

The integration of data and sports, particularly in the NBA, raises complex ethical and regulatory issues. The speaker, a fan and friend of Warriors players, shares his personal connection to the team and the benefits of having access to high-quality basketball experiences. However, he also acknowledges the potential consequences of having access to data that could impact betting lines and gambling. He suggests that GMs may face restrictions on using such information for betting purposes. The speaker also mentions the importance of compliance and transparency in the industry, as sports books and teams operate under similar regulations. Additionally, the speaker introduces Spoken Stories, a new workplace podcasting platform designed for remote teams to build connection and community asynchronously. The platform allows companies and teams to create stories about various topics, providing an alternative to traditional off-site events or Zoom happy hours.

    • Buy and sell virtual socks representing athlete's careers on Spoken.comFans can bet on athlete's future career by buying and selling virtual socks on Spoken.com, with prices influenced by data analysis and real-time performance.

Spoken.com offers a unique platform for sports fans to buy and sell virtual socks representing the career trajectory of athletes, with prices reflecting the projected end of their careers. The platform, which is currently free for three months with the code "TWIST," uses data analysis to determine the starting price based on the athlete's career expectations. The price then fluctuates based on their performance and changing expectations. This creates a live, dynamic market where fans can buy and sell socks, essentially betting on an athlete's future career. The platform currently focuses on NFL players, with Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes being notable examples. Prices are influenced by factors such as injuries, trades, and team performance. The platform also includes a feature to view the top movers, allowing fans to stay updated on the latest developments. Despite some light-hearted banter about fan bases, the overall conversation showcased the innovation and excitement surrounding Spoken.com's unique approach to sports fandom and speculation.

    • Investing in Athlete Careers: A New Exciting MarketA new platform aims to create a market for every athlete in every sport, offering potential for increased volatility and excitement, and plans to provide financial media coverage, with the possibility of creating mutual funds based on collections of players.

The co-founders of a new platform are discussing the potential for increased volatility and excitement in investing in the careers of professional athletes, using the example of New York Jets rookie Garrett Wilson's breakout game. They aim to provide a market for every player in every sport, with an underlying price and a multiplier for those seeking more action and potential for larger gains or losses. The ultimate goal is to create a financial media landscape around this new investment opportunity, making it more engaging and dynamic than traditional stock markets. Additionally, the possibility of creating mutual funds based on collections of players was suggested.

    • Betting on NBA Players' Careers with Movers DailyMovers Daily offers a unique platform for betting on NBA players' careers, modeled after the stock market, with initial liquidity and user-generated content.

The discussed app, Movers Daily, provides a simple and user-friendly platform for betting on the careers of NBA players, with features such as graphs, user-generated content, and the ability to create collections and make long-term bets. The app's foundation is modeled after the stock market, with the belief that betting on a player's career is the way to go. The app provides the initial liquidity, ensuring users can easily buy and sell, unlike other platforms where liquidity may be an issue. Starting a new stock market from scratch is a rare feat, requiring extensive study and regulation. The Movers Daily team had to navigate this process carefully to ensure a secure and functional platform for users.

    • Creating a Legal Sports Betting Market: Engineering, Market Making, and RegulationsExperts from finance and sports manage a complex betting market, using intricate modeling and controlled pricing to mitigate risks and ensure a balanced market. Regulatory hurdles have been overcome, leading to the current landscape of legal sports betting.

The creation and management of a legal sports betting market involves a complex interplay of engineering, market making, and regulatory considerations. Initially, the market is launched with a small user base and controlled pricing by the platform to mitigate risks and ensure a balanced market. Market makers and data analysts use intricate modeling to project public demand and set accurate prices. The prices are guaranteed based on a player's performance statistics, preventing manipulation. The team behind the platform consists of experts from various fields, including finance and sports, to ensure the success of the market. Regulatory hurdles, such as Apple and Google's initial reluctance to allow sports betting apps, have been overcome in recent years, leading to the current landscape of legal sports betting.

    • Protecting Consumers with Regulations in Gambling IndustryRegulations in gambling industry protect consumers from harm and prevent illegal activities, leading to a thriving and ethical industry.

Regulation is crucial in the gambling industry to protect consumers and prevent illegal activities. This was highlighted during the early days of online gambling when there were numerous scandals involving unregulated platforms and offshore enterprises. The lack of regulations led to consumer harm and suffering. However, with the implementation of regulations, consumers are now better protected, and the industry has been able to grow and evolve. This approach can be applied to other areas as well, such as the app store or investing platforms for young people. By educating and allowing them to make bets or investments, they can gain valuable financial knowledge. The key is to ensure that proper regulations are in place to safeguard them from potential harm. The future lies in striking a balance between regulation and innovation to create a thriving and ethical industry.

    • Speaker offers support for brother's gubernatorial campaignSpeaker expresses confidence in brother's abilities and character, and offers resources to support his campaign. They share a connection as New York natives who experienced 9/11 attacks.

The speaker is offering to help raise a significant amount of money for the listener's brother who is running for governor of New York. The speaker expresses confidence in his brother's abilities and character, and is willing to use his network and resources to support his campaign. The conversation also touches upon their shared experiences growing up in New York during the 9/11 attacks, and the impact it had on their lives. The speaker expresses pride in both the listener and his brother, and ends the conversation by addressing the listener as "Vinny" and expressing his liking for that name. Overall, the conversation demonstrates the speaker's support and belief in the listener's brother's political aspirations, as well as their shared connection as New York natives who lived through a pivotal moment in the city's history.

    • Two unexpected stories from 9/11The attacks of 9/11 brought unexpected twists of fate and a sense of community and coming together in the face of adversity.

The events of September 11, 2001, drastically impacted the lives of many individuals in unexpected ways. Two stories shared highlight the unexpected twists of fate that day brought. The first story involves a brother who was on his way to meet friends when the attacks occurred. He was granted permission to leave work early, but on his way, he saw the second plane hit the World Trade Center. He tried to turn back, but ended up walking through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel and spending 30 days helping at the site, resulting in lung issues. The second story is about a business owner who was supposed to meet friends at a location near the World Trade Center. He saw the first plane hit on TV and tried to make his way there, but was stopped by authorities. He ended up staying with a friend for several days and witnessing the aftermath of the tragedy. Both stories illustrate the sense of uncertainty and fear that pervaded the days following the attacks, as well as the sense of community and coming together to help in the face of adversity.

    • A defining moment for Gen Xers in NYCGen Xers in NYC remember 9/11 as a time of collective mourning and unity, marked by acts of compassion and kindness.

The events of September 11, 2001, had a profound impact on those who lived through it, particularly in New York City. For Gen Xers in the area, it was a defining moment in their lives, marked by a sense of collective mourning and unity. People went above and beyond to show compassion and kindness to one another, and the world came together in support of New York City. The memory of that time before and after the attacks is still vivid, and it's difficult for some to make light of the situation through memes or jokes. The emotional resonance of that day is still felt strongly by those who experienced it, making it a pivotal moment in history for many.

Mandie Brice is a podcast host, makeup artist and author of 2 new books who is passionate about the concept that if you look better and feel better, you do everything else better. When Mandie isn’t busy recording interviews of people who’ve taken big risks on Bold Moves podcast, she’s inspiring, encouraging and educating others to go after their dreams. Mandie is sharing how her attitude towards selling has come full circle and how she’s now implementing strategies and knowledge she’s learned over the years through courses and conferences.

Have you discovered what you’re passionate about?

    What we’re talking about

    • Utilizing What You’ve Learned
    • 2020 Vision: How To Plan & Execute Goals To Roar In The New 20s
    • Re-Thinking Your Views On Selling

    Utilizing What You’ve Learned

Over the years Mandie has taken courses, attended conferences and seminars but has hoarded the knowledge she’s learned. Her focus for 2020 and beyond is to start sharing that knowledge and inspiring other people. From her experience as an elementary school teacher to following her passion as a model and makeup artist, Mandie is inspiring people to not only look their best but to follow their passions and even showcasing her talents in her first book, Best Face Forward: Basic Makeup Skills and Practical Looks From Your Makeup BFF

2020 Vision: How To Plan & Execute Goals To Roar In The New 20s

Mandie’s second book, 2020 Vision: How To Plan & Execute Goals To Roar In The New 20s is a guide to reflection, goal-setting and goal achievement in the new decade. She shares the wisdom she’s learned in the past decade on personal development, her experience as a freelancer and entrepreneur and the importance of goals.

    Re-Thinking Your Views On Selling

Mandie recently discovered that she was opposed to the thought and action of selling to people and yet it was an innate action she’d be undertaking since she was a child. Selling doesn’t have to be a “dirty” word and Mandie shares how you can sell and help people at the same time.

It’s time to look good, feel good and do good!

    TIMESTAMPS

11:35 (40 sec MB) – One thing that I think didn’t really serve me well is that there was such a focus on “we’re not selling, we’re helping people” and I think I got it to my mind to the point where I thought selling things was bad. And that is against my nature because a lot of people who have known me for 35 years know that when I was a kid, I used to paint rocks and sell them. I painted pine cones and sold them. I made friendship bracelets and sold them and was always doing some sort of creative hustle since I was like 5. So returning to that should surprise absolutely nobody.
