    Morning Briefing Friday 13th January

    enJanuary 13, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Discussions on funding for green jobs and potential changes to Scotland's gender recognition billThe UK government and Scotland's first minister had productive talks, but tensions remain over potential changes to protected characteristics and Northern Ireland's post-Brexit trading arrangements. Labour leader urges resolution before Good Friday agreement anniversary, while Boris Johnson's future as Conservative leader adds complexity.

The UK government and Scotland's first minister, Rishi Sunak and Nicola Sturgeon, had cordial talks about funding for green jobs and potential changes to Scotland's gender recognition bill. However, there is a threat from the UK government to intervene if these changes may impact other protected characteristics. Sunak is under pressure to address Northern Ireland's post-Brexit trading arrangements and find a solution to the Northern Ireland protocol issues. The Labour leader, Keir Starmer, is urging Sunak to take on the European Research Group to resolve these issues before the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday agreement in April. Boris Johnson could potentially step down as Conservative party leader and offer Sunak a safe seat in exchange for not challenging him for the leadership. Overall, there is a small window of opportunity to resolve these issues and it's important that both sides show flexibility.

    • Boris Johnson's Allies Threaten to Use Him Against Rishi Sunak, Biden Faces Classified Documents Crisis, Lisa Marie Presley Passes AwayJohnson's allies may use his position against Sunak if Tories perform poorly, Biden faces potential election threat from classified documents discovery, Lisa Marie Presley passes away at 54

Former prime minister Boris Johnson's allies are reportedly planning to use his position against Rishi Sunak if the Conservatives perform poorly in the May local elections. Johnson's seat in Uxbridge is believed to be at risk, making him a potential leverage point. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden is facing a crisis over classified documents from his time as vice president being found in his possession. The discovery of these documents could potentially threaten his reelection campaign. Elsewhere, Lisa Marie Presley, the only child of Elvis Presley, has passed away at the age of 54 following a suspected cardiac arrest. In other news, a special counsel has been appointed to investigate the matter regarding Biden's classified documents. These documents were reportedly taken from his time as vice president and found in various locations, including his garage and a Washington DC office. Philip Lacovara, counsel to the Watergate special prosecutor during the impeachment of President Nixon, has suggested this could pose a significant threat to Biden's reelection campaign. This comes as Boris Johnson's political future remains uncertain, and President Biden grapples with the fallout from the discovery of these classified documents.

The Power(s) of Irish Whiskey Lore (Episode 741: November 25, 2018)

The Power(s) of Irish Whiskey Lore (Episode 741: November 25, 2018)

Ireland's Power family dominated the Irish Whiskey industry almost from the day innkeeper James Power started making whiskey behind his inn on Dublin's Thomas Street in 1791 until his descendants merged their company with the Jamesons and Cork's Murphy family in 1965 to create Irish Distillers. Powers remains one of Ireland's best-selling whiskies to this day, and is gradually being reintroduced to the world - while its history is being reintroduced to Dubliners through the Powers Quarter. It's a network of pubs around the family's old Johns Lane Distillery, which is now home to Ireland's National College of Art & Design. We'll look at that history and the Powers Quarter on WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, a tentative Brexit deal between Great Britain and the European Union still faces tough challenges, but is receiving support from the whisky industry. A distillery project in Northern Ireland is being scrapped a year after construction began, and a bankruptcy filing in the US could be a sign of tough times ahead for craft distillers.

    What Is Scotland's Post-Brexit Future?

Brexit reignited the Scottish nationalist fire. In this podcast, Ilaria Maselli and Elizabeth Crofoot discuss scenarios for Scottish independence from the UK: what steps would be necessary and what it would mean for businesses. They explore 3 scenarios: 1) independence and EU membership, 2) the Divided United Kingdom with further devolution of powers to Edinburgh, and 3) Status quo skirmish.
