    enJanuary 21, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • UK Government's Integrity Under ScrutinyPolitical figures in the UK government face ongoing scrutiny and investigations, including Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his deputies, which undermines public trust.

Despite high expectations for a government of the highest integrity, political figures in the UK continue to face scrutiny over past mistakes and ongoing investigations. Rishi Sunak, the UK's Prime Minister, and his deputies, including Dominic Raab, have defended Sunak following his second police fine for breaking rules. Raab emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability, acknowledging that mistakes are part of being human. Meanwhile, Nadim Zahawi, Conservative Party chairman, faces pressure to resign due to tax affairs, with Raab also under investigation. Alan Solhurst, a politics reporter, noted that such incidents add up and undermine the public's trust. Sajid Javid, Health Secretary, meanwhile, argues that charging for GP appointments and A&E visits is necessary for the NHS's survival. Overall, the UK government's integrity is under question as political figures face ongoing scrutiny and investigations.

    • Former UK health secretary's call for private healthcare, Ukraine tank standoff, New Zealand's Labour Party picks new PM, and Mother's Day savingsFormer UK health secretary pushes for private healthcare to ease NHS strain, Ukraine-Germany standoff over tanks, New Zealand Labour Party names new PM, and Mother's Day savings from 1-800-Flowers

The former health secretary in the UK is advocating for those who can afford to pay for healthcare to do so, in order to reduce unnecessary appointments and alleviate the strain on the unsustainable healthcare system. Elsewhere, there's a standoff over sending tanks to Ukraine, with Germany hesitant to agree and Ukraine insisting they are essential to compete against Russian armory. In history, appeasement of bullies has not worked, and there are concerns that this delay could result in unnecessary loss of life. In politics, New Zealand's Labour Party has announced Chris Hipkins as their next prime minister, following Jacinda Ardern's unexpected resignation. And in a lighter note, Mother's Day is coming up, and 1-800-Flowers is offering savings on gifts and bouquets to help celebrate all the amazing moms in our lives.

#53: Leadership, Mental Health and Life as a CEO with Lisa Rodrigues CBE

Lisa Rodrigues is currently a Writer, Coach and Mental Health Campaigner and has spent 13 years of her career as CEO of Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. She was awarded a CBE for services to the NHS in 2012, and has become known for challenging the stigma of mental illness whilst suffering with depression and mental health issues herself.

Lisa joins me today to share some of the amazing experiences throughout her career. She talks about how leaders can create diversity in a team, and how to support the diversity in your team. She shares some of the ways leaders can help support colleagues suffering from mental health issues. She also talks about her experiences of feeling imposter syndrome when writing, and how the best communicators are the ones who say things in the simplest ways.

“A team is much stronger when you take it in turns to lead and you don’t all agree with one another. You need voices of dissent, people with different experiences and different backgrounds because otherwise you’ll have a team that looks the same as one another and that is not a healthy team.” Lisa Rodrigues CBE

#49: Debunking Myths of Project Management with Matthew Gibbons Part 2

Matthew Gibbons is a Project and Operations Manager and part of the Time for Care NHS England Sustainable Improvement Faculty. His background is in Software Engineering, and as he branched out into self-employment he discovered himself in Primary Care as the Business and Network Manager for Watergate Primary Care Network in Cornwall.

This is the second episode with Matthew, and this time we are debunking project management myths. We talk about whether you need a project management qualification to do project management, whether it is sad when your project comes to an end and how important trust is in your project. We also cover the flexibility of a project manager and how you can make them work easily for you. At the end Matthew shares his thoughts on how we shouldn’t be afraid of failure, and that we should embrace it.

“Learning from failure is really really important. It’s ok for a project to fail, and do it early and do it quickly because we can learn from it. Failure is something we should embrace.” Matthew Gibbons

    • Why you don’t need a project management qualification.
    • How project management in primary care has to be agile.
